21、British artist Sacha Jafri has had an incredible year. In September, he set the record creating the world's largest painting. Last week, the painting was sold for $62 million, which Mr. Jafri will give to charity.
Mr. Jafri is a 44-year-old artist from England. Last year, as the coronavirus spread and many countries went into lockdown, Mr. Jafri was in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Rather than feeling stuck because he was unable to move on, Mr. Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could "make a really big difference". He decided to create the world's largest painting. And he wanted to do it in a way that would involve people from around the world. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic. He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries. Using the children's ideas as a starting point, Mr. Jafri began to paint.
The painting is massive --- over 17,000 square feet. Mr. Jafri planned to cut it up into smaller pieces when he was finished, so he could sell them for charity. It took him 7 months to create the painting. He worked long hours --- often up to 20 hours a day.
Mr. Jafri hoped that his painting, called "The Journey of Humanity", would help bring the world together during a difficult time. He tried to keep the ideas from the children's pictures in his mind. He even included the children's drawings in the artwork. When he finished last September, he had set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest painting. The painting was roughly the size of four basketball courts. Since Mr. Jafri's goal was to raise money to help children, the painting was split up into 70 large sections. Mr. Jafri hoped that by selling the sections separately, he could raise $30 million.
But when the auction (拍卖) ended on March 22, Mr. Jafri did much better than that. And he didn't have to split up the pieces. The whole artwork was sold for $62 million. That's the fourth highest price ever paid for a painting by a living artist.

22、 The final bell rings at a high school in downtown Los Angeles. Nearly every student walking out of the school gate studies a screen, with their head bowed down. Over the past decade, such scenes have become quite common — at least in the United Sates. Research indicates that American millennials look at their phones 150 times a day on average.
In the meantime, the number of American teenagers reporting feelings of depression has grown significantly. Some people blame the increase on the Great Recession following 2008 and other social changes. However, a big new study suggests a different explanation —the rise of social media. Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University, led the study.
With data collected from more than 50,000 American teenagers, she found that those who spent lots of time on social media were more likely to agree with remarks such as “The future often seems hopeless.” Those who used screens less, spending time playing sports or socializing with friends in person, were less likely to report feelings of depression.
This, in fact, is not the first time that scientists have found that social media can rob people of their happiness. One study published in 2016 asked a randomly selected group of adults to quit Facebook for a week. It turned out that they reported feeling less depressed at the end of the week than those who continued using it.
Some research, however, suggests that social-networking sites can promote happiness if used to engage directly with other users, rather than just to feel jealous of happy moments someone shares online. This provides a reminder that it is users’ attitudes that shape their experiences on social media.“I often remind myself that it's all filtered," reflects Sarah, a junior at the high school in Los Angeles. “People only post what they want you to see, so it can seem that their life is superior to yours.” But when asked if she has ever considered deleting her social media accounts, Sarah looks confused.“No. I would feel lost.”
【1】What is the topic of the passage?
A.Feelings of depression. B.The rise of social media.
C.Addiction to recreation. D.The use of smart phones.
【2】What can we learn from the two studies in paragraph 3 and 4?
A.Sports and socialization are supposed to be encouraged.
B.Most American teenagers have sunk into hopelessness.
C.Social media have negative effects on people's feelings.
D.People are not in a position to live without social media.
【3】According to Sarah, what is the right attitude to others’ happy moments shared online?
A.Jealous. B.Critical. C.Concerned. D.Tolerant.
23、In April 2014,the world's oldest known message in a bottle was discovered floating in the Baltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter.
A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel,Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.
The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, dated May 17,1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的),the readable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps to pay for postage.
From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group,he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter,Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.
“It was almost unbelievable,”Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message.“That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face."
Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946,but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.
The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1.After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message.
Previously, the oldest message found in a bottle spent nearly 98 years at sea and was discovered in April 2012,according to Guinness World Records.

24、Entering adulthood is an important step in everyone's life. It means that a young person must soon leave childishness behind and start to shoulder grown-up responsibilities.
In Germany, “Jugendfeier” is a coming-of-age ceremony for 14-year-olds. They go to school to prepare for the occasion, studying topics, such as cultural respect and social responsibility, which will help them become worthy citizens. The hope is that the young people taking part in the ceremony will take on these values for themselves.
In Latin America, “quinceanera” is a celebration for girls on their 15th birthday, marking a girl’s entry into womanhood. In the past, “quinceanera” was intended to ready girls for marriage and they were taught cooking, sewing, and other household skills in preparation. Today, it's similar to how one's 18th birthday is considered an important day in other cultures.
In India, the sacred thread ceremony is performed when a boy is grown-up. He is given three sacred threads representing three promises he makes: to respect knowledge, to respect his parents and to respect society. After the ceremony, the child, traditionally, leaves his family to live with a Guru(teacher). At this point the boy becomes "twice-born"---first his physical birth, and second his intellectual birth through a teacher's care.
In Vanuatu, young boys come of age by jumping off a 98-foot-tall tower with a bungee-like rope tied to their ankles, just barely preventing them from hitting the ground. At the ceremony, the diver's mother will hold something representing his childhood, and after the jump the item will be thrown away, representing the end of childhood. He is now a man, ready to protect the family
【1】What is the shared expectation of the four coming-of-age ceremonies?

25、 Hot weather has forced dozens of commercial flights to be canceled at airports in the Southwest this summer. This flight-disturbing _______ is a warning sign. Climate change is projected to have far-reaching _______—including sea level rise flooding cities and shifting weather patterns causing long-term declines in agricultural production. And there is evidence that it is beginning to affect the takeoff performance of commercial aircraft, with potential effects on airline _______.
National and global transportation systems and the economic activity they support have been designed for the climate in which it all developed. In the aviation (航空) industry, airports and aircraft are designed for the weather conditions experienced _______. Because the climate is changing, even fundamental elements like airports and key economic parts like air transportation may need to be_______.
As scientists focused on the impacts of climate change and extreme weather on human society and natural ecosystems around the world, our research has quantified how extreme heat associated with our warming climate may affect _______ around the world. We’ve found that major airports from New York to Dubai to Bangkok will see more frequent takeoff weight _______ in the coming decades due to increasingly common hot temperatures, which can help reduce the aircraft’s weight so as to lower its required takeoff speed.
There is obvious evidence that extreme events such as heat waves and coastal flooding are happening with greater frequency and intensity than just a few decades ago. And if we _______ to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly in the next few decades, the frequency and intensity of these extremes is projected to increase dramatically.
The _______ on aviation may be widespread. Many airports are built near sea level, putting them at risk of more frequent __________ as oceans rise. The frequency and intensity of violent air movement may increase in some regions due to strengthening high-altitude (高海拔的) winds. Stronger winds would force airlines and pilots to change flight lengths and routings, potentially increasing fuel __________.
Many departments of the economy, including the aviation industry, have yet to seriously __________the effects of climate change. The sooner, the better: Both airport construction and aircraft design take decades, and have __________ effects. Today’s newest planes may well be flying in 40 or 50 years, and their __________ are being designed now. 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was an impatient mother and frustration always kept me from enjoying life, until some strange insects came to my family.
It was Friday. We were having friends over for dinner, but Mike had to stay late at work. I was now on my own to get everything ready for the night. I could feel my frustration increasing as I drove to pick up Haydn and Michael from school. I rushed them into the car and told them that we were making a few stops before heading home, and that they needed to help me tidy the house. Both of them started complaining immediately. I turned and gave them fair warning that I was not in the mood to listen. For the next hour, I dragged the boys from one place to the next…
Just as we finished our last task, the boys reminded me that we needed to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets (蟋蟀) for their lizards(蜥蜴). Fifteen minutes later, I pulled into the driveway with only forty-five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it?
I started barking orders at the boys, but they were focused on pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into the top of their little cricket container. I just let off steam and yelled at them to hurry up.
I didn’t really know how it happened, but the next time I looked up, one hundred crickets were jumping all over my kitchen…
My frustration exploded. I could feel myself about to start yelling in a way I rarely do. I watched my two sweet boys try anxiously to chase the crickets, screaming with laughter. Strangely, I felt something different.
In that split second, I realized I had two choices. Could I continue feeling annoyed and angry, or could I let go and enjoy this silly moment?
