二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、When I first began running in high school on the track team, it made sense to carefully clock every mile and push myself to race for personal bests. But as I transitioned from running for sport to running for amusement as an adult, I found that tracking my workouts often just ended with frustration. And it wasn’t until my watch battery died several years ago that I first experienced the sense of calm that comes with running for the pure joy of it. I never replaced the watch battery, and experts say that might not be a bad thing for my fitness goals.

This is the idea of unplugged(不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it’s a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout.

“People used to have an interest in their sport and got enjoyment out of the sport, but now that’s switching to the data,” said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. “They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And ultimately we know that makes them feel bad.”

Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workout if the batteries on their tracking device are dead.

In addition, there is evidence that running watch-free is beneficial for more than just the casual jogger. Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch. He stopped tracking his pace years ago and only trains based on his effort and his overall running time: Getting rid of the pace tracking on his watch, as well as switching off other technology while he runs, has helped him get more “in tune” with his body.

“If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head,” Hofbauer said. “For me, the simpler, the better.”

【1】What happened to the author when his running watch didn’t work?

A.He lost the desire to keep running every day.

B.He experienced running as a really fun activity.

C.He was at a loss how to replace the watch battery.

D.He had great difficulty achieving his fitness goals.

【2】What does Eoin Whelan think of running watches?

A.They can lead to hurtful comparisons.

B.The way people use them is different.

C.The data provided by them is not correct.

D.They can help enrich the wearers’ social life.

【3】Why does the author mention Trevor Hofbauer in paragraph 5?

A.To show the popularity of running watch-free.

B.To encourage people to become professional runners.

C.To prove the positive effects of running watch-free.

D.To present professionals’ views on running watch-free.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.It is time to take off your running watch

B.The running watch is gaining more popularity

C.We should enjoy a break without a running watch

D.A running watch can slow down your running speed

  • 22、The 2013 Iron—Man Match took place on a cold and windy day in Lake Placid. While my dad had spent months training, nothing could have prepared him for what he met on that day.

My entire family was there;however,I was supporting him from my summer camp, where I tracked him online.By 9:00 a.m.,my eyes were fixed on a dot on a screen that represented my father and his progress. He was making steady progress on the bike trail until all of,a sudden I saw his dot stop moving.I assumed this was a technical fault. After all,Camp Monroe Was not known for its Wi-Fi.Actually a gust of wind had caused a huge tent to blow into him, knocking him to the roadside.

At the hospital,he discovered he had four broken bones. While still recovering from his accident,he was dealt a second blow.He was diagnosed(诊断)with cancer and, although still weak from his injuries, had to suffer from accelerated radiation and surgery. His athletic future was looking more and more bare.

However,as he got better,he started to train again.Soon he was running weekly, bounding out of the house with a look of determination that both impressed and worried us.Much to our surprise,he just kept getting stronger. His desire to return to something he loved was greater than his expectation.Last summer, exactly three years after his accident,my father completed the Iron—Man once again. This time,he dashed across the finish line, his fist punching the air in celebration.

Now,I believe in the power of determination to beat the odds, regardless of the circumstance.Today, because of my dad,I believe in setting my own rules, and not letting others command what I can or cannot do.And I believe that life is just like that little dot;it can be gone in a second,so we must make every moment count.

1What prevented Dad from moving on during the match?

    A. An accident.   B. The flat tire.

    C. The technical fault.   D. Terrible road conditions.

2How did the author feel about Dad’s future match while in hospital?

    C. He did what he was fond of.   D. He wanted to challenge to his family.

4What can be learned from Dad?

  • 23、An artist in Oakland, California is using his skills to help the homeless. Greg Kloehn builds very small shelters that make life on the streets a little more comfortable. The structures offer the homeless some safety and protection from bad weather. Each little house also has wheels on the bottom so it can go wherever its owner goes.

Greg Kloehn has given away at least 20 tiny houses. Several are on the roadside near an active railroad. On a recent day, Mr.Kloehn stops at one to visit Oscar Young. The two men hug. Inside his little shelter Mr.Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr.Kloehn also visits SweetPea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her belongings.

In the mornings, Mr. Kloehn searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags become roof material. A washing machine door and refrigerator part become windows. Nails, screws and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical device to the house. The device is powered by the sun.

Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man.

  • 24、   Growing up in an Italian-American household was, for me, very special. My mother, Gina, an immigrant from Calabria, Italy, held on to so many of her family traditions that sometimes, regardless of the fact that we were living in the United States, our home felt like an annex(附件) of Italy.

To this day, my mother may use some English terms and expressions from time to time, but our conversations are, for the most part, in her mother tongue. And most of those conversations revolve around food.

While eating breakfast, we often discuss what we will make for lunch and right after lunch, we begin to figure out what’s on the menu for dinner. For us, food Italian food is an important part of our lives. We live to eat, not eat to live. The food my mother prepared for me and my sister as children is the same food my grandmother created in her small farm kitchen high up in the mountains.

So, it surprised no one that I dedicated the past four years of my life to a new cookbook, Heirloom Kitchen, which records and preserves the recipes of our ancestors, my family’s, and those of the families of many of my friends. These heritage recipes link us to our pasts.

One of my family’s heritage dishes I was sure to learn when I was young is my mother’s arancini di riso (Italian rice balls). Arancini, in Italian, means little oranges. After you roll some leftover rice into a small ball, place a piece of mozzarella(白干酪) in the center, and then bread and fry it, you get a golden ball.

My mother has always been respectful of ingredients. She grew up on a farm where the “fruits” of their labour directly transferred into the food on the table, and wasting any ingredient was unacceptable. One of the greatest lessons my mother taught me in the kitchen is to cook what I have on hand, and to never let anything go to waste, because a bit of creativity can create a new, delicious dish.

So, when I take a perfect little arancino out of the hot oil and crack it open, I am immediately transported back to my childhood: I was a little girl getting off the bus and running through the back door to the smell of last night’s rice transformed into crunchy goodness. This small snack symbolizes so many things in my life: my mother’s waste-not philosophy, her ability to take a few simple ingredients and transform them, and finally, the way she carried her mother’s recipes to the US in her mind and heart so she could, years later, teach me about my heritage through food.

B.The family’s dinner is based on the recipes of their ancestors.

B.How to make delicious Italian rise balls.

C.How to be creative at reducing food waste.

D.The introduction of the author’s new book.
