二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Scientists have created a new app designed to identify dangerous mosquitoes based on sounds the insects make. The app, called Abuzz, is aimed at helping fight major diseases spread by mosquitoes.

Haripriya Vaidehi Narayanan is one of the researchers who helped develop the app. Narayanan told VOA that anyone with a mobile phone could use the app to identify mosquitoes. “If they see a mosquito around, they just take out their phone, open up the app, point their phone towards the mosquito and hit the record button,”she said. “Then, when the mosquito flaps its wings and starts flying around, it makes that noise, that annoying buzzing noise. That noise is what gets recorded by the Abuzz app.” she added.

Many diseases that mosquitoes carry do not have cures or vaccines. So, targeting the flying insects is the best way to control them. “The most important step is to know where the mosquitoes are,” Narayanan said.

Traditional methods for hunting mosquitoes are costly and can take a very long time. The process also requires labor-intensive trapping as well as trained scientists to identify the insects.

Manu Prakash is a professor of bioengineering at Stanford University and a lead investigator on the project. He says that out of about 3,500 different mosquito species, only about 40 are dangerous to humans. Prakash says the goal of the project was to find out whether the mosquitoes around a person's house are just an annoyance, or whether they are possibly dangerous.

When mosquitoes move their wings up and down, they produce buzzing sounds. But each kind of mosquito makes a slightly different buzzing noise. The app records these sounds. Users of the app can get an answer by recording as little as one or two seconds of the buzzing sound. The app compares this recording to a collection of other recordings. It then predicts which species of mosquito it is most likely to be.

By making use of mosquito information worldwide, the app can help build maps of where dangerous mosquitoes are. This can help scientists and health officials identify areas where disease is likely to break out and where to target mosquito control.

【1】Why is it important to locate mosquitoes?

A.Because they are very small and hard to find.

B.Because diseases carried by them are a big problem.

C.Because mosquitoes flap their wings very quickly.

D.Because the buzzing noise of mosquitoes is annoying.

【2】What will Abuzz do after it records the sound of a mosquito?

A.Compare it to a database and identify its species.

B.Make a somewhat different buzzing noise.

C.Release some chemicals to kill the mosquito.

D.Draw a map of the place where the mosquito was.

【3】In which way could Abuzz help people?

A.It can help people control the number of mosquitoes.

B.It can help people avoid some species of mosquitoes.

C.It can help predict where mosquito-carried diseases are most likely to occur.

D.It can help record the mosquito hiding places very quickly.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

A.The Different Species of Mosquitoes in the World

B.New Ways to Fight Disease Caused by Mosquitoes

C.How to Identify Sounds Made by Different Mosquitoes

D.A New App That Can Identify Dangerous Mosquitoes

  • 22、   The type of soap with the name African black soap or simply black soap is the one that has its origin in Africa or West Africa to be precise.

The soap is often made by women and is fair-traded, though not always, Black soap is traditionally made in West Africa, typically Ghana, from secret recipes. Different tribes have adopted their own secret making techniques, which can be seen in different colors among black soap. Varieties of black soaps actually made in Africa tend to be pure.

The first step of making traditional African black soap is selecting the plant—usually cocoa pods or palm tree leaves, sometimes shea tree bark (酪脂树皮), which then are sun-dried and burned to ashes which are often used to heal cuts. To guarantee the natural color and light smell, it's important to keep a constant temperature of burning. Then the water is added into the ashes along with the shea butter, palm oil, and coconut oil. That mixture is cooked until it becomes stable. It needs to be hand stirred for at least 24 hours. After that, they scooped it out and let it 'cure' for two weeks. Those soaps that are made in Africa contain no artificial ingredients (材料).

African black soap is being used for many generations and many causes. African black soap has many benefits over commercially produced soaps. One of the most common usage is to cure skin conditions and problems. After using this soap, the skin looks healthy. Another usage of the black soap is for removing the makeup and dead skin. It also gives an excellent UV (紫外线) protection because of the high level of shea butter in it.

However, the black soap also has some unpleasant side effects. For example, your skin may become over-dried. If so, you should stop using it and wash your skin with water.

1What leads to color differences of African black soap?

A.Different market demands. B.The makers' personal preferences.

C.Some artificial ingredients. D.Various secret making techniques.

2What should people do first when making African black soap?

A.Choose the proper plant. B.Change the temperature of burning.

C.Mix coconut oil up for a whole day. D.Dry palm tree leaves for two weeks.

3What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The benefits of African black soap.

B.The problems caused by black soap.

C.The harm of using African black soap.

D.The process of making African black soap.

4What do we know about African black soap?

    A.It has a strong smell.

    B.It's effects are two-edged.

    C.It's quite difficult to purchase.

    D.It's specially made for women.

  • 23、   Alibaba Group will extend its digital operating system to 1.5 million small neighborhood stores in China. Under the so-called Plan W, Alibaba is looking to develop a number of smaller shops with a daily revenue (收入) of over 10,000 yuan ($1,456) in lower-tier cities, townships and villages.

The latest move falls under Alibaba’s Ling Shou Tong (LST) business unit, which connects the millions of street stands in China and improves marketing, delivery, and inventory (库存) management abilities through digital means. The data-backed retail (零售) management system has been designed to digitize the business of millions of mom and pop stores and neighborhood convenience stores.

Alibaba will offer a smart point-of-sale system, some 10,000 exclusive new product offerings, and a variety of online touchpoints to help users access offline stores virtually. Alibaba intends to help these mom and pop stores double or even triple their revenue, and they can sell more efficiently, and get flexibility to refill stocks based on their changing needs.

Its POS machine performs every function throughout the retail process and provides real-time suggestions. For instance, it would send out alerts on potential stock shortage, and would recommend cost-effective purchase to enhance the store’s profitability. The machine also collects average selling price for a certain product in the nearby areas, thereby giving references to shop-owners to make informed pricing decisions.

Furthermore, an inventory monitoring system is in operation to give real-time advice on product display. This is coupled with a three-layer warehouse system covering 200 cities and townships to ensure the timely delivery of products, based on geographical shopping preferences that are present in Alibaba’s data book.

Despite slow consumption growth at home and abroad, one in every five small shops surveyed by LST reported they have bucked the trend and witnessed positive revenue growth. Average daily revenue surpassed 7,000 yuan, as compared with the 3,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan range for average offline stores.

1What’s probably the aim of Plan W?

A.To open 1.5 million small neighbourhood stores in China.

B.To improve supermarkets’ digital operating system in urban areas.

C.To increase revenue of smaller shops through digital means.

D.To move Ling Shou Tong business unit to under-developed areas.

2How can Alibaba’s POS machine make a difference?

    A.By warning possible stock shortage.

B.By increasing profit at a higher price.

C.By comparing prices of a product in different cities.

D.By offering shop-owners advice on bargaining.

3What does the underlined word “bucked” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Followed. B.Resisted.

    C.Neglected. D.Taken.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.Application of digital means to small shops.

B.Real secrets of Alibaba group’s success.

C.Great hope of street stands in China.

D.Possible ways of increasing small shops’ profit.

  • 24、It’s possible that your phone’s face-unlock might finally be able to work while you’re wearing a mask. Researchers have found that facial recognition algorithms are getting better at recognizing faces in masks, according to data published on Tuesday by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST). Using independent testing of more than 150 separate facial recognition algorithms, the new report suggests masks may not be as big a problem for facial recognition systems as initially thought.

When NIST first examined masks’ effect on facial recognition in July 2020, it found that algorithms weren’t great at identifying faces with masks. “Face recognition can make errors, which can implicate people for crimes they haven’t committed,” writes the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). “It is particularly bad at recognizing African Americans and other ethnic minorities, women, and young people.” But the pandemic has given developers plenty of time to focus on the mask problem, and NIST’s data shows that facial recognition algorithms are getting better at working with masked faces. “After the pandemic, some developers have submitted algorithms which show significantly improved accuracy and are now among the most accurate in our test,” the report reads. NIST’s public ranking for facial recognition tests bears out this report. Eight different algorithms now hold false rates below 0.05 percent.

Nevertheless, there remain a number of limitations to the study. NIST researchers did not employ actual images of masked faces. Instead, they applied masks digitally to ensure consistency across the sample. As a result, “We were not able to get a thorough simulation of the endless variations in color, design, shape, texture, and ways masks can be worn,” the report states. The digital mask was a blue surgical mask covering the full width of the face, but testers noted that performance varied considerably depending on how high the mask was placed on the face.
