  • 22、   One of the main challenges facing many countries is how to maintain their identity in the face of globalization and the growing multi-language trend. "One of the main reasons for economic failure in many African countries is the fact that, with a few important exceptions, mother-tongue education is not practiced in any of the independent African states." said Nellie Alexander, Director of the Project for the Study of Alternative education in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.

In response to the spread of English and the increased multi-language trends arising from immigration, many countries have introduced language laws in the laws in the last decade. In some, the use of languages other than the national language is banned in public spaces such as advertising posters. One of the first such legal provisions was the 1994 "Toubon Law" in France, but the idea has been copied in many countries since then. Such efforts to govern language use are often dismissed as futile by language experts, who are well aware of the difficultly in controlling fashions in speech and know from research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process.

It is especially difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the “purity” of a language by law. Since the time of Shakespeare, English has continually absorbed foreign words into its own language. English is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world, but there has not been a barrier to acquiring prestige and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of state regulation is that it has never been the Anglo-Saxon way of doing things. English has never had a state-controlled authority for the language, similar, for example, to the Academic Francaise in France.

The need to protect national languages is, for most western Europeans, a recent phenomenon—especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessary take over too many fields. Public communication, education and new modes of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields lo defend

    1Neville Alexander believes that?

A.mother-tongue education is not practiced in all African countries

B.globalization has resulted in the economic failure of Africa

C.globalization has led to the rise of multi-language trends

D.lack of mother-tongue education can lead to economic failure

2The underlined word ”futile' (in paragraph 2) most probably means “   ”.

    A.workable B.practical

    C.useless D.unnecessary

3Why do many English-speaking countries not support the language protection efforts described in the passage?

A.They think language protection laws are ineffective.

B.They want their language to spread to other countries.

C.They have a long history of taking words from other languages.

D.It reduces a language's ability to acquire international importance

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.English has taken over fields like public communication and education

B.Many sheets of national culture are threatened by the spread of English.

C.Most language experts believe it is important to promote a national language.

D.Europeans have long realized the need to protect their national languages.

  • 24、How to Change Negative Thought Patterns

Negative thought patterns are a common concern which can affect our daily life including our emotions and behaviors. It is important to understand how to counter negative thinking in order to reduce these negative consequences.

List your automatic negative thoughts. Thoughts are directly linked to our feelings and behaviors. Thus, our thoughts influence how we feel, which influences how we behave. 【1】Listing your negative thoughts helps increase your awareness about your thinking and can improve your ability to change your thoughts into healthier alternatives.

Avoid using negative language. 【2】Allowing negative thoughts to grow within your mind causes them to influence how you react to situations, which can produce negative results. Consciously make an effort to replace these words with will and can.

【3】Write a list of everything, no matter how big or small, that you are thankful for. Good examples include things like your family, lover, pets, comfortable home, etc. This will help you to appreciate how many positive things there are in your life because it requires you to shift your focus to what you have instead of what you do not have.

Treat each day as a new opportunity to achieve a goal. Life gives you new chances and opportunities at every moment. Setting goals for yourself can help to focus your energy on something positive instead of worrying about negative thinking. Start by identifying a few goals you want to work on in the next 6 months. Examples of goals could be: applying for a job, finishing school, getting more friends, or anything else that you want to accomplish. 【4】

Focus on your overall physical and mental health. If we are not feeling well physically or mentally, this could increase the amount of negative thinking we have. Better physical health is connected to happiness. 【5】 Eat a well-balanced diet filled with fruits, vegetables, protein, and vitamins. Try new and creative forms of working out like hiking, rock climbing, dancing, etc.

A.Set a goal for yourself at the beginning.

B.Acknowledge what you are grateful for.

C.All three influence each other at once.

D.Make goals that are achievable and realistic.

E.Therefore, it is vital to take care of yourself.

We arrived at our new house after two hours' drive from grandpa's farm. Mr. O'Malley, my old dog, simply ran around, smelling every corner of our new house. He cocked his head at the front door and listened to the unfamiliar traffic noise.

On request, I called my grandpa. He picked up on the first ring. "Max, How's your new house?" "Fine. " I swallowed hard, trying to hold back my tears. "I miss you already. "

"It's been so quiet since you left," he said. "Even the squirrels (松鼠) miss being chased by O'Malley, your big ugly dog! You'd better watch him. That dog is used to running wild on this farm. Your mom's going to be busy with her new job. It's up to you to keep him out of trouble. " My grandpa laughed. "You know, I could keep him here on the farm, since you will be coming up every weekend".

"I know," I said. But I couldn't give up my dog for five days a week!

Mr. O'Malley howled all week long. In the evenings, Mom and I walked him together because it took both of us to hold him back. What he wanted to do was run.

At last Friday came, and we packed to go to my grandpa's farm. I was eager to let my dog run loose.

As we started out of the door, Mr. O'Malley pulled hard and I lust the grip. Morn hung on for a moment, but she slipped in the mud and ended up on her face. Mr. O'Malley took off.

We jumped into the car and caught up to Mr. O'Malley. We chased Mr. O'Malley all the way to the park before he'd had enough and was ready to get in the car.

Finally we were on our way to the farm. "That dog can actually run thirty miles an hour!" Mom started to laugh.

    注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右;(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
