21、Who would have thought of creating a library in a war zone where danger surround people? But a few book lovers have built an underground library in Darayya, Syria, which provides learning, hope and inspiration.
Anas Ahmad is one of the founders of the library and he is a former civil engineering student. Many times he and his friends risk their lives to collect books from destroyed houses near the front line. That means they have to be extremely careful when they go through bombed-out buildings; they have to hide themselves from snipers (狙击手).
Since the library was built, its creators have collected more than 14,000 books from abandoned (被弃置的) houses and buildings. “We saw that it was important to create a new library so that we could continue our education,’’ said Ahmad.
People throughout the city have put the library to good use. Doctors in the town are using the books to continue their studies and treat patients; these books even help them perform surgeries (手术). Teachers are using the books to prepare classes in the war town. Unfortunately, children will not be found in the library as it is too dangerous to walk there.

22、Some of our most common expressions have damaging effects on millions of people and many of us don't know we're hurting others when we speak.
This kind of ableist language is omnipresent in conversation: Making a “dumb”,turning "blind eye" to a problem, calling a boss “psychopathic(精神病)”。And, for the most part, people who utter these phrases aren't intending to hurt anyone-more commonly, they don't have any idea they're engaging in anything hurtful at all. However, for disabled people, these common words can be micro-assaults, they can do real, lasting harm to the people whom these words and phrases undermine(危害) and even the people who use them in daily conversation, too.
This phenomenon, known as “ableism” discrimination based on disability, can take on various forms.Personal ableism might look like name-calling,or committing violence against disabled person, while systemic ableism refers to the inequity disabled people experience as a result of laws and policy.
But ableism can also be indirect. As much as we all like to think we're careful with the words we choose, ableist language is a part of our lexicon(词典)。
If ableist language is so harmful why is it so common? Ableist language functions like any other slang term:People repeat it because they've heard others say it.However, according to University of Louisville linguistics professor D.W.Maurer,while anyone can create slang term, the expression will only "gain currency according to the complete agreement of attitude within the group".
So,how to avoid it? Examining your own go-to phrases and attempting to replace them with less problematic synonyms is a good start."Think about what you mean.Don't just repeat a phrase because you've heard it,think about what you're trying to convey,"says Maurer.Often avoiding ableist language just means choosing more straightforward and literal language-rather than “fall on deaf ears", one might say“ignoring" or “choosing not to engage".
【1】What does the underlined word "omnipresent"in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Unintentional.
B.Offensive.
C.Widespread.
D.Unacceptable.
【2】Why is the harmful ableist language so widespread?
A.Because it is a part of our lexicon.
B.Because people don't realize it's hurting others.
C.Because everyone can create slang terms.
D.Because it's often repeated and people consider it to be true.
【3】What can be inferred from the passage?
A.If you call your boss psychopathic,it's some kind of ableism.
B.To be roundabout is not a good way to avoid ableism.
C.Ableism are indirect, unintentional and sometimes just a little offensive.
D."Falling on deaf ears" is an example of people consciously associating deafness with willful ignorance.
【4】What's the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce ableist language.
B.To argue if ableist language is harmful.
C.To call on people to avoid using ableist language.
D.To explain why ableist language is so common.
23、 Ladies, if you find yourselves wandering an unknown city with a man who is questioning your directional abilities, don’t doubt yourselves.
A recent small study published in the journal Psychological Science found that the longstanding theory that women have a more difficult time reading maps wasn’t true.
Historically, men have performed better than women in studies that tested their spatial(空间的)ability. But the leading study author Margaret Tarampi and a researcher from the University of California, Santa Barbara theorized that social influences had an effect on this outcome: The cultural belief that women are worse at reading maps could be seen as a stereotype(固有模式) threat, meaning women believe they’re bad at something, so they perform poorly as a result. The researchers also theorized that women performed better at skills that involve a social element. In other words, if reading a map means helping someone else, they might perform better.
Tarampi and her team tested both theories on undergraduate students at UCSB across three separate experiments. And, indeed, the results showed that men scored better than women only when they were mentioned the stereotype of male superiority before the test.
When the researchers did not mention it and gave a social context for reading the map, women’s scores improved across the board. Women also performed better when the test maps simply included human figures, rather than just random objects and landmarks.
So ladies, next time you struggle to figure out whether you should make a left or right at the Louvre, take out your tourist map with a healthy dose of confidence.
【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To warn women of one of their shortcomings.
B.To introduce the topic of the passage.
C.To encourage women to read maps.
D.To state a social phenomenon.
【2】Women are thought to be worse at reading maps because of .
A.a poor sense of direction B.a lack of experience
C.a social stereotype D.threats from others
【3】Men performed better than women in the study when .
A.they were asked to help someone else by reading a map
B.they were informed of the stereotype before the test
C.the test maps simply included human figures
D.there were social elements in the map
【4】What can be concluded from the passage?
A.Women can read maps as well as men. B.Women are better drivers than men.
C.Women always have difficulty reading maps. D.Women are better at spatial ability.
24、Using the power of artificial intelligence (AI), scientists have revealed new insights into the creation and destruction of mass extinction. Contrary to conventional knowledge, their study suggests that larger extinctions are not always a form of “creative destruction” that allows new organisms to radiate (向周围辐射出去) and evolve. Instead, it suggests that mass extinction is rarely associated with new species of radiation.
Dr. Hoyal Cuthill, the lead study author from the University of Essex in the UK and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, said in a statement, “Some of the most challenging things to understand the history of life are the vast timelines involved and the number of species. New machine learning applications can help us understand the information in human-readable form. This means that we can, so to speak, hold the evolution of half a billion years in the palm of our hand and gain new insights from what we see.”
They concluded that mass extinction and later radiation were not connected as previously thought. Within 5 percent of the most significant periods of disruption (中断), AI detected “big five mass extinctions, seven more mass extinctions, two mass extinction-radiation events and 15 mass radiations. Most importantly, it discovers that massive radiation and extinction rarely occurred with each other, changing the view that greater extinction leads to a kind of deep cycle-like species radiation of nature. It appears that larger extinctions are certainly not the engine of evolutionary radiation. Take the Cambrian Explosion for example and it was about 41 million years ago when a large group of animals first appeared on the first fossil record and the dawn of a high mobile animal equipped with modern physical features.
This new study found that a handful of other notable explosions of biodiversity, including the Cambrian Explosion, usually occurred at a time when they were largely isolated (孤立的) from extinction. Dr. Nicholas Guttenberg, a study co-author from the Tokyo Institute of Technology explained, “Ecosystems are dynamic and you don’t need anything to exist to allow something new to appear.”
【1】What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A.To analyze the cause of creative destruction.
B.To tell us the result of the new study.
C.To explain the power of artificial intelligence
D.To present the conventional idea of mass extinction.
【2】What do Dr. Hoyal Cuthill’s words imply?
A.New AI machines learn applications better.
B.It’s difficult to understand the history of life.
C.New species appear before mass extinction.
D.AI contributes a lot to the study of evolution.
【3】Why is the Cambrian Explosion mentioned in the text?
A.To provide knowledge of history.
B.To highlight the importance of AI.
C.To support the new study.
D.To prove the previous view is right.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.A new understanding of mass extinction.
B.The processes of biological evolution.
C.Animal species with modern physical features
D.The relationship between mass extinction and radiation
