二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、At a medical laboratory clinic in Waterloo, Ontario, an elderly woman sat on the edge of a waiting room chair loudly singing out the Celine Dion’s tune My Heart Will Go On. I was there with my father, who was getting a routine blood test when the woman arrived. She settled into the seat directly across from my dad. The position made it seem as though she was sitting forward to engage in conversation with him. She smiled at him, and he smiled back.

I was concerned about how my dad would react to the possible interact on his space. He was 77 at the time and had been living with Alzheimer’s for several years. He was a brilliant introverted man. When he was healthy, he considered it wholly bad manners to bring undue attention to oneself. I couldn’t help but think that this melodic little woman was playing with fire.

Her singing began gently, like a quiet hum. I glanced over at dad. His smile was gone, and he was staring right at her. She was staring back. I couldn’t read his expression, but it seemed to be something like confusion. This wasn’t an unusual state for him, and I wondered whether he was actually seeing her at all or if he was lost somewhere deep in his mind, not really aware of her presence at that point. Or maybe he was trying to establish whether this was someone he should know. Her singing slowly got louder. By the time she got to the chorus — “Near, far, wherever you are…”, dad looked a little shocked. Still, I watched for any sign of an annoyed outburst. Instead, his face softened, and the tension eased in his brow. He no longer looked confused.

People say that Alzheimer’s is a thief, which it steals your loved ones slowly, day by day. There is so much heartbreaking truth in that statement. But certain experiences with my dad have allowed me to see a side of him that I never knew existed. In an unexpected way, that’s what happened to me that day in the clinic. When her song ended and the waiting room became silent, the woman opened her eyes. My dad was still looking directly at her. “That was beautiful,” he said. And she smiled and said, “Thank you.”

【1】Why did the author’s father appear in the clinic?

    A.To get a physical examination.

B.To ask for advice from the doctors.

C.To search for a cure for his disease.

D.To enjoy the song sung by an elderly woman.

【2】Why did the author think the elderly woman was playing with fire?

A.She considered the old woman’s song as beautiful.

B.She believed the old woman would become famous.

C.She thought the old woman’s voice would attract others.

D.She assumed her father would get angry with the old woman.

【3】What was the reaction of the author’s father when the song ended?

    A.He was annoyed at it.

    B.He was stuck to confusion.

C.He was excited to hear it.

    D.He thought highly of it.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Alzheimer’s is a thief.

B.A beautiful singing from an old lady.

C.An unexpected reaction from my father.

    D.Some heartbreaking truths about Alzheimer’s.

  • 22、   Justice in society must include both a fair trial to the accused and the selection of an appropriate punishment for those proven guilty. Because justice is regarded as one form of equality, we find in its earlier expression the idea of a punishment equal to the crime. “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” is such an example. This conception of retributive justice (报应正义) is reflected in many parts of the legal codes and procedures of modern times, especially when the death penalty is demanded for a person who has committed murder. This philosophy of punishment was supported by the German idealist Hegel. He believed that the criminal had by his own actions denied (否定) his true self and it is necessary to do something that will counteract (抵制) the denial and restore the self that has been denied. To the murderer nothing less than giving up his own life will pay his debt.

Modern jurists (法学家) have tried to replace retributive justice with the idea of corrective justice. The aim of the latter is not to abandon the concept of equality but to find a more adequate way to express it. It tries to preserve the idea of equal opportunity for each person to realize the best that is in him. The criminal is regarded as being socially ill and in need of treatment that will enable him to become a normal member. Only those criminals who are incurable should be permanently separated from the rest of society. This does not mean that criminals will escape punishment. It means that the goal of justice is to cure the person, not simply to get even with him. If severe punishment is the only adequate means of accomplishing this, it should be administered. However, the person should be given every opportunity to assume a normal place in society. His crime must not deprive him of the opportunity to make his way in the society of which he is a part.

【1】Why is “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” presented?

A.To give moral support to retributive justice.

B.To prove that equality demands just punishment.

C.To justify the need for punishment as a part of law.

D.To prove that man has long been interested in justice.

【2】What might be Hegel’s attitude to the death sentence for murder?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Disapproving.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Cautious.

【3】What is the basic difference between retributive justice and corrective justice?

A.The type of crime that was proven.

    B.The severity of the punishment.

    C.The reason for the sentence.

    D.The outcome of the trial.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Fitting the punishment to the crime

    B.Approaches to just punishment

    C.Attaining justice in the courts

    D.Improvements in legal justice

  • 23、Sunscreens (防晒霜) can offer protection from two types of ultraviolet (UV) rays (紫外线): UVB, which according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, are the chief cause of sunburn and play a key role in the development of skin cancer, and UVA, which get through the skin more deeply and are largely responsible for skin aging and wrinkling, as well as skin cancer risk. The SPF (防晒指数) measurement on sunscreens refers to the UVB protection level — and the number may not mean what you think it does. SPF 15 doesn’t protect you from 15% of UVB rays, just as SPF 100 doesn’t protect you from 100% of the rays. In fact, as you get into the higher numbered SPF sunscreens (think: 50 and above), the difference in UVB protection is actually pretty small.

Theoretically, though the increase in UVB protection with a super-high SPF sunscreen may be not worth considering, it may help, and certainly can’t hurt, to use it — that is, as long as you do so correctly. “The only downside is whether you’re giving yourself a sense of false security,” Dr. Gohara says.

Indeed, as Dr. Wang also pointed out, when people choose increased SPFs, they may actually feel so protected by the product that they finally ignore proper sun protection. “When people use really high SPF products, they tend not to reuse, they tend to stay out in the sun much longer, and they don’t use other protective measures such as clothing and hats,” he says. Regardless of any increase in protection that a high SPF may or may not offer, one thing is certain: It doesn’t give your body a free pass from sunburns, aging, or cancers, and it doesn’t protect you from those things for any greater length of time than the lower SPF options. Both Dr. Wang and Dr. Gohara emphasized that, no matter what the SPF is, it’s important to reapply your sunscreen every two hours.

【1】What rays can cause skin cancer according to the text?

    A. UV   B. UVA   C. UVB   D. UVA&UVB

【2】What can we know about SPF from Paragraph 1?

    A. It tells us the UVB protection level.

    B. Its better to use higher numbered SPF.

    C. SPA100 means preventing 100% rays.

    D. Theres a big difference between SPF 50 and above.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 2?

    A. protection     B. disadvantage

    C. result      D. method

【4】Why are we advised to reapply our sunscreen every two hours?

    A. We choose too low SPF products.

    B. The higher SPF can make us stay outside longer.

    C. Clothing and hats are not enough for sun protection.

    D. It can’t completely protect us from aging, sunburns or cancers.

  • 24、   Migingo, a tiny rock island on Lake Victoria in Kenya, measures just 0.49 acres. According to some accounts, it was originally settled by two Kenyan fishermen, who came here in 1991. Others say it was a Ugandan who came here first and then brought more of his fishing friends. It was this kind of contradictory stories and the battle over the island’s fish-rich waters that created a conflict over the ownership of Migingo between Kenya and Uganda.

Back in 2009, Migingo has a population of 131, but the number has ballooned to around 1000. Drawn by the large population of Nile perch, fishermen from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania crowded into Migingo. In spite of measures set in place to keep population under control, the place becomes packed to the point where there’s little room to walk in.

What’s really surprising is that just a few meters away lies a much larger and completely uninhabited island called Usingo. It is said that the place is home to a demon (魔鬼), and fishermen are afraid to even set foot on it, let alone live there with their families. But it turns out to be just a rumor online. Locals haven’t even heard about any demons, but they do have a very practical reason.

Despite permanent police presence from both Uganda and Kenya, pirate (海盗) attacks still occur. They are not as frequent and violent as they used to be, but every few months fishermen do run into pirate stealing their catch and boat engines, sometimes even killing them in the process. But there is strength in numbers, so it’s safer for most people to live on Migingo than to risk moving to Usingo.

Migingo remains the world most densely populated island, but it may not hold that title for much longer. Due to over-fishing around the island, the supply of Nile perch is on the decrease, and people are starting to move to other fishing spots.

1What can we know about Migingo according to the text?

A.It belongs to two countries. B.It has the densest population.

C.It attracts the most tourists. D.It is home to brave fishermen.

2Why do fishermen refuse to move to Usingo?

A.They may be attacked by pirates.

B.They can’t get a huge catch of fish.

C.They believe there live some demons.

D.They can’t be protected by policemen there.

3What may happen to Migingo in several years?

A.It will cause more violent conflicts.

B.It will be a suitable place to live in.

C.It will be deserted by some fishermen.

D.It will have the largest population of fish.
