22、After all the waiting, I finally received my first vaccine against COVID-19 in mid-April. So what did I do? I turned up the music and danced - with abandon, with joy and with relief. What is a 66-year-old woman doing dancing by herself? This is what I have been doing my entire life.
There was no real structure to my dancing: no lessons, competitions or prizes. As an only child, I spent hours dancing alone, when not reading on my bed. I would turn up the Telefunken console that my dad had brought back from Germany and played and replayed my favorite songs .
At Chatelard School, my strict British all-girls boarding school in the Swiss mountains, we teenagers threw off our uniforms and danced our little hearts out, barefoot in our nighties. Being against every rule, I was then sent to stare at a spot in the dark hallway, shivering in the same white nightie.
I have danced in moments of joy, but also of stress and anxiety. For me, it is a ritual. For me, dance is a release, a liberation, a joy, self-medication, and self-expression. For me, dance is always about losing myself in a feeling of liberation.
I look back on the role that Zumba played in helping me through sad times. It gave me the strength and courage to leave a marriage. When my father was dying of cancer, I cried through the classes, barely able to follow the instructor. During those last few years in my job, I turned up my Zumba activity that prepared me for those final days before early retirement.
But there was also joy: My Jimmy Choos danced with me at my daughter’s wedding. I danced to live music with my partner Ted at his birthday party, and there was that New Year’s Eve in Paris, where we danced on the tables.

23、Maya Angelou once called the poet Sonia Sanchez “a lion in literature’s forest. When she writes she roars, and when she sleeps other creatures walk quietly.”
As a leading figure in the 1960s Black Arts movement and one of the first people to set up a Black Studies program at an American university, Sanchez’s life and work have established her as one of the greats in American poetry.
Last month, she won the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize -a 250, 000 lifetime achievement honor given to “a highly accomplished artist from any discipline who has pushed the boundaries of an art form, contributed to social change, and paved the way for the next generation.”
Combining Black slang, traditional forms and jazz music on stage
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Sanchez wrote her very first poem around the age of five, and she’s still going. This spring, she published her Collected Poems -a book that lasts four decades of work.
Sanchez draws deeply on Black oral traditions, skillfully mixing blues bars with traditional Japanese forms like haiku and tanka. She’s known to bring jazz musicians, drummers, and other musical guests on stage to aid and elevate her performances.
Lifting Black voices through art and then education
Simmons says that the spoken word and its power to create change is at the core of Sanchez’s work. That’s evident in her involvement with the Black Arts movement: Inspired by Malcolm X, Sanchez and her contemporaries-other legendary writers like Toni Morrison, Nikki Giovanni, and Amiri Baraka-worked vigorously to lift Black voices through art. And when they spoke, Sanchez says, “people would jump up, I mean literally jump up and stamp their feet.”
Influencing a generation of younger poets
Part of Sanchez’s power comes from advocating for her people-and from lighting a trail for poets who came after her. Honoree Fanonne Jeffers, who now has five poetry collections and a novel, says she learned how to lean into her power through Sanchez.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As 17-year-old Torriell Norwood drove through St. Peters-burg, Florida last February with her friends to pay a visit to the great park as scheduled. Norwood shared her first aid courses and her dream of becoming a doctor and other girls shared their precious experiences about the natural adventures with each other. The laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls inside her car quickly gave way to screams. As they approached an intersection, another car T-boned them, sending their black car sailing into the yard of a nearby home, coming to a stop only when it crashed into a tree. All of them were in panic instantly, totally at a loss!
As smoke waved from the car, a bystander shouted, “It’s about to blow up! Get out!” The impact had caved in Norwood’s driver’s side door, jamming it shut. The bystander seized the front door handle of the car, summoned all his strength to pull it open but failed. Shaken, but otherwise OK, Norwood crawled out through the window. She had a cut on the right side of her face. Originally her lovely face became very pale. Along with two of her friends, who’d also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life.
But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, Azarria Simmons, was not with them. Norwood ran back to the wreck and found Simmons slumped in the back seat. “She was not moving,” Norwood shouted with her heart tightened. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out, avoiding the broken glass as best she could. She dragged Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. She checked her pulse. Nothing! She put her head against Simmons’s chest. No sign of life!
