二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Worn-out tires are no good for a car, right? But they can be good for another type of transportation: walking!

In Zimbabwe, and in many other countries, old tires are not thrown away. Instead, craftsmen cut them up and make them into sandals (凉鞋). One of these craftsmen is Casper Mamutse, who runs a small sandal-making business just outside his house.

When Casper first saw a man named Isaac wearing tire sandals, he thought they looked funny. So he asked Issac where he got them. Issac said he had made them himself. Casper decided to buy a pair to make his friends laugh. But his friends didn’t laugh, instead they wanted their own. “Finally, I asked him to teach me how to make tire sandals,” says Casper.

For more than six months, Casper learned how to cut and shape soles (鞋底) from tires. To make the right size, Casper traces a shoe sole on the tire and cuts out a sole. “Cutting a tire with a knife requires as much brains as strength,” he says. “You have to use a lot of power and concentration or else you will cut your finger along with the tire.” After the sole is cut, Casper tears off the soft inside part of the tire and cut it into strips (带状物). He attaches the strips to the sole for “belts”. From one tire, Casper can make about four pairs of sandals for adults or about six pairs for kids.

The Zimbabwe countryside is full of sharp stones. Unless you have thick soles, your shoes can be easily pierced (刺穿). But strong boots are expensive, and many people walk barefoot. But now they can get tire sandals, which are strong enough and much less expensive than leather shoes.

Fedzai, a 10-year-old boy, thinks that what his friends need now are not cars to take them to school, but shoes. “Going to school on foot instead of in a car does not bother me very much,” he says. “After all, we are still moving on tires.”

1Why did Casper buy a pair of tire sandals at first?

    A.To entertain his friends

B.To keep it as a souvenir

    C.To learn the producing technique

D.To prepare for his sandal-making business.

2Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Cutting soles from tires only needs power and strength.

B.Tire sandals are much stronger and more comfortable than boots.

C.It took Casper over six months to learn to make a pair of tire sandals.

D.Many people can’t afford to buy strong boots in Zimbabwe countryside.

3What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Special Sandals

    B.Walking on Tires

    C.Tire-sandals Business

    D.A Journey in Zimbabwe

  • 22、   Researchers in Singapore found that eating mushrooms over twice per week could help prevent memory and language problems later in life.

According to the study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, there is a unique antioxidant (抗氧化物质) present in mushrooms that helps protect certain brain functions.

Researchers observed 663 Chinese adults aged over 60 whose diets and lifestyles were tracked from 2011 to 2017. In the study, the participants were asked how often they ate six different types of mushrooms: oyster, shiitake, white button, dried, golden and tinned. The findings showed that eating more than two shares of mushrooms per week somehow lowered the chances of mild cognitive impairment (MCi) by 50% against those who ate fewer than one share.

MCI is a condition that can make people forgetful, affect their memory and cause problems with language, attention and finding the exact position of objects in space. Changes in behavior can be not very noticeable and not serious enough to be known as dementia (痴呆).

Participants who ate more mushrooms were found to perform better in thinking and processing exams and also exhibited a faster processing speed. The advantage was reportedly more apparent in those who ate more than two shares a week or more than 300 grams.

The scientists pointed out, however, that they have yet to put up a direct link between the fungi and brain function.

The researchers also acknowledged that since this study mainly relied on self-reported information on mushroom intake and other dietary factors (因素), further studies may be required.

Still, the lead study author Lei Feng is encouraged by their findings.

“This correlation is surprising and encouraging,” Lei said.

Mushrooms are one of the richest dietary sources of ergothioneine — a matter which humans can’t make on our own.

1What are the findings in paragraph 3 about?

A.Diets and lifestyles. B.The percent of MCI.

C.The types of mushrooms. D.The benefit of eating mushrooms.

2What can we know about MCI?

A.It can strengthen memory. B.It can result in language problems.

C.It can make people get lost. D.It can lessen the chance of forgetfulness.

3What is the result if students often eat more mushrooms?

A.They will take the exams much more easily

    B.Their academic performance improves greatly

C.Their thinking ability is better than the majority

D.They will love communicating with others.

4Where does the text most probably appear?

    A.Scientific fiction. B.An advertisement.

    C.A science report. D.Adult literature.

  • 23、The new high-speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.

The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for Spring Festival.

“For the first time,I feel home is not that far away after all,”said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high-speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family.

The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago,and he has now settled in Urumqi.

The 1,776-km line, which passes through Qinghai province and is the country’s first   high-speed railway to be built in a high-altitude region, came into service on Dec 26.

“We normally drive home for Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season.” Liang said. “Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes,so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.”

More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high-speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.

The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang’s development. All passenger trains will gradually shift to the new link, leaving the old one to be used for goods. As a result,Xinjiang’s annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons from the current 70 million.

The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the deserted Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the bone-dry sands of the Gobi Desert.

The project could help China to promote its high-speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xi zhang, director of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway project’s management department in Xinjiang.

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Marco stared at the blank canvas (油画布) spreading out before him, its stark whiteness almost laughing at his sudden lack of inspiration. He was in his final year of high school, and his art portfolio (画集) was fast approaching its due date in a week. This canvas was meant to be his masterpiece, the crown jewel of his collection, but all his ideas seemed to escape the moment he stood before it. “What’s wrong with me? What should I do?” Marco murmured to himself.

Having grown up in the bustling city of New York, Marco had always found beauty in the chaos. The harshness of roaring cars, the colorful palette of street art, the symphony of diverse tongues and the odd behaviors of the passengers-all served as inspirations for his art. Yet, now, when it mattered most, he found himself lost.

Upset and distressed, Macro walked out, longing to run across something unexpected. Unaware of the duration of his wandering through the streets of the city, Marco chanced upon a small, hidden park he had never noticed before. It was a pocket of quiet amid the urban uproar, which attracted Marco immediately. An old man sat on a bench, feeding pigeons that flocked around him in a dance of fluttering wings.

The old man noticed Marco’s thoughtful gaze and gestured him over. They struck up a conversation aimlessly as if they had been old friends for a long time. In their talk, everything was full of interest from life to art. At last Marco confided (倾诉) his artistic block to the old man. The old man listened intently before offering a piece of wisdom. And then, the old man stood up slowly and patted Marco’s shoulder softly. “Sometimes, the best inspiration comes from the places we least expect. Look beyond what you see.” The gentleman said in all earnestness.

    要求:

    1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The next day, Marco returned to his canvas.
