二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Carlos Slim’s proposal that we work a three - day week sounds crazy. But many, in 1922, thought Henry Ford crazy when he announced that his staff would work a five - day week.

Our working week seems normal to us because it is what we all always do. He certainly could be for those he was most concerned about when he made his three - day - week statement at a business conference in Paraguay: the workers who are not ready to retire. As Mr. Slim said, it no longer makes sense for people to stop working in their fifties or sixties when they may still have up to a third of their lives ahead of them. “People are going to have to work for more years, until they are 70 or 75, and just work three days a week - perhaps 11 hours a day.” he said.

Keeping older employees at work makes sense for societies, especially those with a diminishing number of young people who are expected to support long - living retirees.

He appeared to be suggesting that these short - week workers earn the same as they did full - time. That is what happens at Telmex, his Mexican fixed - line phone company, where those qualified for retirement can choose to work four - day weeks on full pay.

Older workers elsewhere might prefer shorter weeks on reduced pay - and eight or nine - hour days rather than 11. Their companies might value keeping their experience while saving money on their salaries. What about everyone else? There are those who are unemployed, or in unstable jobs, who would be delighted to have three secure, well - paid days of work a week.

Shorter weeks don’t work in every job, but they work in more jobs than most tradition - bound managers think. Agreeing to them requires two shifts in management thinking. The first is the realization that much of the time spent in offices is wasted anyway. Second, senior executives need ro understand that the best way to measure people is by the work they produce - not by how much time they spend at their desks.

People living longer, in better health, are changing working life too. Mr. Slim’s idea is in tune with the times.

【1】According to paragraph 2 why did Mr. Slim think it unwise for people in their fifties or sixties to retire ?

A.Because they have longer life to live in their future.

B.Because they have children and old parents to support

C.Because they have much interest in their present work.

D.Because they have more experience than young workers.

【2】What can we infer from the passage ?

A.The decision of working five days a week by Ford was considered normal in the past.

B.Old people continuing working can reduce young people’s pressure to support their old parents

C.Some companies don’t want their old workers to go on working because they can save money.

D.Much time spent at work is wasted if managers don’t agree to reduce old employees’working time.

【3】What does the underlined phrase “in tune with” mean in the last paragraph ?

    A.Different from.

    B.Superior to.

    C.Far from.

    D.Consistent with.

【4】What is the best title for this passage ?

A.Retire Or Not, This Is A Question!

B.Shorter Weeks Is Welcome By All

C.Working Three Days A Week: A Great Idea

D.Carlos Slim - Crazy For More Resting Time

  • 22、K2 is nicknamed "savage mountain". You hear tragic stories: For every four people who reach the summit, one dies. I was too afraid to even think about skiing down it. Even the best ski mountaineers thought it impossible.

But that changed after a training expedition to Broad Peak. I got a clear look at K2's massive face, and it inspired me. Over time, my skills improved and, by 2017, I didn't feel the fear anymore. I began preparations. To be the first to do it just adds to the challenge. Fear is an important element of life, but to ski down K2, I had to stop being afraid.

At the base camp, I felt calm and prepared. There were no emotions or doubts — I just knew I could do it. But there were challenges. In total, it took about three days to reach the summit. For many climbers, getting to the peak of K2 would be the defining moment of their lives. For me, it was where the real challenge began.

The most dangerous part was the Messner Traverse. It's pure ice, up to a 75-degree angle in places, with drops on either side. You need to keep your turns and movements smooth and confident. No one had attempted it before, so it was a relief to cross it.

In total, going down the mountain took about seven hours. When I eventually skied into camp, I simply lay in the snow, emotionally and physically exhausted. I'm so proud of what I achieved. No one thought it could be done. It taught me the value of patience and that nobody else can make your dreams come true.

【1】What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the origin of K2's nickname.

B.To show that K2 is very hard to be conquered.

C.To explain why the author wanted to ski down K2.

D.To describe the author's first impression of K2.

【2】What was the most important factor in challenging K2 according to the author?

    A.Advanced equipment.

    B.Skilled safety guards.

    C.An overall knowledge of K2.

    D.A positive attitude without fear.

【3】Which word best describes the author?

    A.Courageous.

    B.Creative.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Curious.

【4】What did the author learn from his experience?

    A.One should always dream big.

B.Support is needed to realize dreams.

C.It takes patience and effort to succeed.

    D.We should always have self-confidence.

  • 23、The new high-speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.

The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for Spring Festival.

“For the first time,I feel home is not that far away after all,”said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high-speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family.

The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago,and he has now settled in Urumqi.

The 1,776-km line, which passes through Qinghai province and is the country’s first   high-speed railway to be built in a high-altitude region, came into service on Dec 26.

“We normally drive home for Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season,”Liang said.“Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes,so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.”

More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high-speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.

The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang’s development. All   passenger trains will gradually shift to the new link, leaving the old one to be used for goods. As a result,Xinjiang’s annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons from the current 70 million.

The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the   deserted Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the bone-dry sands of the Gobi Desert.

The project could help China to promote its high-speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xi zhang, director of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway project’s_management department in Xinjiang.

【1】How long did it take to go from Urumqi to Lanzhou by the usual train before?

    A.about 12 hours.  B.About 6 hours.

    C.About 18 hours.  D.About 24 hours.

【2】What’s the main advantage of the new high-speed railway?

A.It takes more time to go to Urumqi to Lanzhou.

B.It will be more convenient for people all over the country to Xinjiang.

C.All the people in Lanzhou can return home on festivals.

D.It helps to improve Xinjiang’s development.

【3】From the passage we can learn________.

A.Xinjiang’s annual goods ability can increase nearly four times

B.the new railway technology may help more railway lines to be built abroad

C.the high-speed railway lines can’t be built across the bone-dry sands

D.the old railway lines can only carry goods now

【4】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.The new high-speed railway line is good for all people to go home.

B.The new high-speed railway line benefits businessmen to carry goods.

C.Taking the new train is safer than driving home from Urumqi to Lanzhou.

D.Businessmen seldom went home for Spring Festival before.

  • 24、On a break from his studies in the MIT Media Lab, Anirudh Sharma traveled home to Mumbai, India. While there, he noticed that throughout the day his T-shirts were gradually gathering something that looked like dirt. “I realized this was air pollution, or sooty (沾满烟灰的) particulate matter (PM), made of black particles released from exhaust (尾气) of vehicles,” Sharma says. “This is a major health issue.” Soot consists of tiny black particles, about 2.5 micrometers or smaller, made of carbon produced by incomplete burning of fossil fuels.

Back at MIT, Sharma set out to help solve this air-pollution issue. After years of research and development, Sharma’s startup Graviky Lab has developed technology that attaches to exhaust systems of diesel generators (柴油发电机) to collect particulate matter. Scientists at Graviky then turn it into ink, called Air-Ink, for artists around the world. So far, the startup has collected 1. 6 billion micrograms of particulate matter. More than 200 gallons of Air-Ink have been harvested for a growing community of more than 1,000 artists, from Bangalore to Boston, Shanghai, and London.

Posted all over Graviky Lab’s Facebook page today are photos of art made from the Air-Ink and paint, including street wall paintings, body art and clothing prints. At first, there was still no specific application for the ink. Then the startup decided to find new ways to further spread its mission. It chose to do so through art. “Art helps us raise awareness about where the ink and paint comes from. Air pollution knows no borders. Our ink sends a message that pollution is one of the resources in our world that’s the hardest to collect and use. But it can be done,” Sharma says.

    【1】What made Sharma invent Air-Ink?

    A.Coal industry in Mumbai.

    B.Health issue of the Indians.

    C.Incomplete burning of fossil fuels.

D.Dirt on his T-shirts during his break in India.

    A.The particulate matter.

    B.The exhaust system.

    C.The diesel generator.

    D.The newly-developed technology.

【3】What can we infer about Air-Ink from the text?

    A.It improves artistic effect.

    B.It makes pollution acceptable.

C.It helps Sharma make no profit.

    D.It raises environmental awareness.

    【4】What’s the text mainly about?

    A.A cleaner of outdoor air.

    B.A product made from PM.

    C.A printing technology.

    D.A newly-founded company.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右。

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year,   thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.

Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.

We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.

When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.

But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.

We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.

Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

“Three, two, one. Happy New Year!” we screamed the words as loud as possible.
