二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Students in American schools learn from an early age to give presentations(演讲) as part of their regular classroom activities. Children as young as five years old often give brief talks about objects they bring in to school – called “show and tell,” and this training is a basis for later public speaking. Even so, many native English-speaking adults are afraid to speak or give presentations in front of a large group.

Speaking English in public meetings is necessary for many students and employees. The best way to improve is to practice public speaking in a friendly environment. Learners need to receive feedback about what they are doing well and about their mistakes. One group that gives members the chance to practice is Toastmasters. Toastmasters is an international organization that holds weekly meetings. At the meetings, members each give a speech and give others advice about their speeches and speaking style.

Charles LeBeau is a public speaking professor and consultant. He began his career in Japan in 1982. Currently, he teaches at two universities and at the Toshiba International Training Center. He has also written books on the subject.

English language learners around the world use his book Speaking of Speech. Speaking of Speech tells about a method of teaching public speaking for non-native speakers. Mr. LeBeau says a simple approach helps English learners.

“The approach that I’ve taken is to simplify and break it down. First if we look at a presentation, what’s going on, there are basically three messages that the presenter is giving the audience, all simultaneously(同时). There’s what I call the physical message. Physical message is basically body language. It’s the way that my body, as a speaker, is talking to the audience. And then there’s also the visual message. The visual messages are the slides that we now make and show the audience. The third message is the story message. The story message is the content of our presentation. So another way we can think of the story messages is that it’s the verbal message, and it’s what we say to the audience. The story message also includes how we organize our ideas to present to the audience,” LeBeau said.

【1】 Which of the following statements is true?

    A. The best way to improve is to practice public speaking in an unfriendly environment.

    B. Toastmasters is an international organization that holds meetings every two weeks.

    C. Only non-native English-speaking adults are afraid to give presentations in front of a large group.

    D. At the meetings of Toastmasters, members give not only a speech but also advice.

【2】 What are the three messages given in Mr. LeBeau’s simple approach that helps English learners?

    a. the physical message

    b. the visual message

    c. the story message

    d. the verbal message

    e. the basically body language

    A. a b c   B. b c d   C. a b e   D. c d e

【3】 The book Speaking of Speech by Charles LeBeau is mainly intended for___________.

    A. children as young as five years old

    B. non-native English speakers

    C. native English speakers only

    D. students in American schools

【4】 Which could be the best title for this passage?

    A. Necessity of Speaking English in Public Meetings

    B. Toastmasters, an international organization

    C. Tips for Public Speaking

    D. Charles LeBeau, a public speaking professor and consultant

  • 22、What is an orchestral (管弦乐) musician’s job? To show up in glamorous concert halls, give the best performances humanly possible, then pack up and go home? Or is it something more than that?

To cellist (大提琴演奏家) Yo-Yo Ma, what happens in gilded venues such as Orchestra Hall, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), is but one facet of what a classical musician can do. The rest occurs beyond the spotlight, when musicians venture out into neighborhoods and try to change the world. That’s what Ma and young colleagues have done during his decade-long tenure as the CSO’s creative consultant.

Ma has tried to influence a generation of young musicians. When Ma wasn’t performing alongside the Civic Orchestra, he was visiting Chicago Public Schools, giving “Concerts for Peace,” helping design a Symphony concert series for ages 3 to 5 and inspiring Civic musicians to bring their art to correctional facilities, homeless shelters, violence-plagued Chicago neighborhoods and other places where they’re desperately needed. The idea has been to persuade gifted young musicians to think beyond the rigors (艰苦) of their instruments and the lure of the limelight, to envision how their music can change people’s lives.

The question is whether Ma’s passion for using music to serve society — and to address its many ills — has compelled the Civic Orchestra musicians to do likewise on their own. The best indications come from the young artists themselves, particularly those who have become Civic Fellows, a program launched in 2013 to propel them into “teaching, community engagement and program planning,” according to the orchestra.

Violist Helen Hess was in the first wave of Civic Fellows. “The visit to the homeless shelter was the first time I’d been anywhere like that. It opens your eyes to things you might never have been exposed to. It’s taught me to find common ground and interact with different kinds of people,” Hess said.

【1】What has Yo-Yo Ma been inspiring young musicians to do?

A.Put true feelings into their music.

    B.Make a difference through music.

C.Attract more children to learn music.

D.Show the best of themselves on stage.

【2】What do we know about Civic Fellows?

    A.It is a result of Yo-Yo Ma’s influence.

B.It was founded by Yo-Yo Ma in 2013.

C.It aims to build confidence in young artists.

D.It encourages artists to learn from each other.

【3】How did Helen Hess describe her visit to the homeless shelter?

A.It inspired her to practice her performance skills.

B.It helped her see her own weaknesses.

C.It caused her to treasure her own life.

D.It enabled her to relate to others.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Yo-Yo Ma as a musician?

    A.Caring.

    B.Demanding.

    C.Ambitious.

    D.Humorous.

  • 23、阅读理解。

Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”

Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real talk I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.

Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quite! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?

Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!

【1】What did the author’s classmates think about his report?

    A.Controversial.

    B.Ridiculous.

    C.Boring.

    D.Puzzling.

【2】Why was the author confused about the task?

A.He was unfamiliar with American history.

B.He followed the advice and flipped a coin.

    C.He forgot his teacher’s instruction.

D.He was new at the school.

【3】The underlined word “burning” in Para. 3 probably means _______.

    A.annoyed

    B.ashamed

    C.ready

    D.eager

【4】In the end, the author turned things around _______.

    A.by redoing his task

    B.through his own efforts

C.with the help of his grandfather

D.under the guidance of his headmaster

Don’t expect to find big name musicians on here; you’re more likely to find the musicians playing at local coffee shops than bands you hear on the radio..

    Pow Wow

Pow Wows are the Native American people’s way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships, and making new ones. This is a time method to renew Native American culture and preserve the rich heritage of American Indians. 四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

    It’s definitely nature

Two and a half thousand years ago, the ancient Greeks believed that your personality was the result of different fluids, or ‘humors’, in your body, like blood, phlegm and bile. According to Hippocrates, the ‘father or modem medicine’, black bile caused depression and irritability, while blood made you brave and hopeful. These ideas spread all over the world, and in the 18th century, people with mental illnesses were sometimes treated with leeches (蚂蟥) in order to restore the balance of their humors. It was only in the 19th century that scientists began to doubt the theory of humors, although patients may have noticed much earlier that they weren’t getting any better!

By the late 19th century, personality had been correctly linked to the brain. This was a big advance, but some people took it too far and phrenology (颅相学) emerged as a new ‘science’.

Phrenologists believed that the brain affected the shape of the head, and so by feeling someone’s head, they could discover the shape of their brain and therefore their personality—including, for example, how likely someone was to commit murder. At the height of its popularity, phrenologists were consulted about possible marriage partners or to give a background check on job applicants. Job interviews must have been interesting in those days!

More recently, scientists have looked to our genes as the source of personality. While there is certainly a link, it is far from simple. For a start, a single gene might be involved in many different aspects of our personality-and we have around 25,000 genes in our body. And when even a simple thing like the colour of your skin is the result of more than l00 different genes, imagine how many are involved in a character trait like being open, agreeable or conscientious.
