22、Chemical Waste Can Be Recycled into a Range of Drugs and Fertilizers
More than 300 ways to convert widely available chemical waste into a range of drugs and fertilizers have been identified by a software program. The researchers behind the tool believe it will optimize the chemical industry and allow the recycling of by-products that would otherwise need to be stored.
Bartosz Grzybowski at US software and chemistry company Allchemy and his colleagues used their software, also known as Allchemy, to look for useful products from 189 small molecules that are regularly created as by-products of large-scale industrial processes around the world.【1】
The software created a vast database of all the possible combinations of chemicals and the processes that could be used to combine them. Running on a single high-end server, the program took about a month to calculate the hundreds of billions of combinations. These were then narrowed down to only those processes that led to the creation of drugs, fertilizers or other useful molecules.
Grzybowski says that all of the discovered processes could eventually have been found by humans, but the vast scale of possible processes made them incredibly hard to spot. 【2】 However, Grzybowski says that his favorite result was an antibiotic that can be produced from lactate, which comes from waste plastic bottles, and phenol, a by-product of coalmining. “I was hoping to find aspirin or something, but it’s actually much more interesting than that,” he says. “It actually solves the problem of circular chemistry, pretty much in an exhaustive way.”
【3】. He says that this software works in the other direction: it takes a list of available resources and finds all the possible uses for them. “This chemistry is pretty straightforward. The difficulty is in spotting the opportunity.” he says. “The building blocks are very simple, but when you start talking about 200 waste molecules, within one step of combinations you have 40,000 options.”
Grzybowski says he hopes that Allchemy will eventually lead to a “Tinder for molecules”. Chemical companies could put in details of all of their available waste products, other companies could list molecules they would like to have synthesized for a specific purpose, and third parties could bid to perform the waste-to-drug synthesis. 【4】
A.Among the discovered molecules were drugs to treat leprosy and heart disease.
B.But something that’s developed in the lab needs to be translated in a profitable way into a large pilot scale.
C.An additional 56 molecules that are commonly created from chemical waste during recycling processes were also included.
D.Identifying uses for chemical waste in the lab is useful, but scaling up that process may be more difficult.
E.Grzybowski had previously worked on projects to create new methods to synthesize specific molecules.
F.This would reduce waste from the global chemical supply chain and perhaps also lower the cost of drugs and other products.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
What Causes Déja Vu?
It’s a frightening feeling: You walk into a place you know you’ve never been before but are overwhelmed by a sense of familiarity-a memory you can’t quite reach. Has this all happened before? Most people experience ‘this sensation, known as déjà vu, at some point in their lives. It’s a hard feeling to study, though, because it tends to arise spontaneously and be shaken off easily.
Déjà vu means “already seen” in French, a term possibly coined by French philosopher Émile Boirac. In a 2009 study, Cognitive psychologist Anne Cleary of Colorado State University and her colleagues found that viewing these sneakily similar scenes was more likely to cause feelings of déjà vu than viewing dissimilar scenes-suggesting that perhaps there is some environmental trigger for the brain to call out, “Hey, I recognize that!” even when it’s never seen the scene before.
While Cleary’s research shows that a slight familiarity can result in déjà vu, Akira Robert O’Connor, a cognitive psychologist at the University of St. Andrews says, in spontaneous déjà vu cases, it’s quite possible that the familiarity feeling is random. Supporting this random-misfire hypothesis is the fact that young people actually experience more déjà vu than older people. Younger brains are a little more excitable, more likely to fire more quickly rather than holding back, O’Connor says.
Older people may also be less adept (擅长的)fact-checkers when false feelings of familiarity arise, says Chris Moulin, a cognitive neuropsychologist at the Grenoble Alpes University. Older adults still recognize such false familiarity. “It’s not perhaps that older adults are not generating false familiarity, ” Moulin says. “It’s just that they don’t have, anymore, that certainty that what they’re experiencing is false. ”
This is a normal part of aging, not the conflation (合并)of déjà vu with reality that people with dementia (老年痴呆症)may experience. So enjoy the feeling of having felt it all before while it lasts, Generation Z.
