二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Coping with Dry Eye

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, the tears don’t work correctly, or they evaporate too quickly.【1】 “The burning can feel like sand is in your eyes , and this can cause extreme eye tiredness, light sensitivity, and blurry vision,” says Angela Bevels, an eye specialist in Tucson, Arisona.

【2】 It can last for a long time, though, when caused by immune system diseases such as lupus. Skin issues on or around the eyelids are also contributors. Previous eye surgeries such as LASIK can lead to dry eye too.【3】

【4】First, take frequent breaks from staring at computer and phone screens. Turn off fans or other direct air to your face, as this can increase the evaporative loss of tears as well. The American Optometric Association (AOA) suggests making sure to get a good night’s sleep. The AOA guide lines suggest aiming for eight to ten glasses of water every day.

Over-the-counter eye drops can help ease symptoms. But when they don’t provide relief or you find you are using drops more than six times a day, it’s time to see an eye doctor for treatments that are available only by prescription or when provided in a medical office.【5】Placing temporary plugs in the eyelids to keep the tears around longer is also one of the treatments.

A.Some life style changes can minimize the discomfort.

B.It is considered common and often ignored.

C.These include heat and compression treatments of the eyelids to improve the tear film.

D.There are many contributors to the condition of dry eye.

E.It is much more than a nuisance.

F.Sometimes dry eye is a temporary condition caused by a variety of irritants.

G.People who wear contact lenses are also at a higher risk.

  • 22、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

We may have 750 friends onlinebut we’re lonely

My phone and my laptop are within constant touching distance, whether Tm eating, drinking, in the shower, or watching the football. Before I get up every morning, I check my email, my texts and my Twitter feed. By the time I’ve got out of the shower, it’s time to do it again. I have a constant drip-drop of information from any of the 750 online friends and followers that I associate with. 1. How does a 28-year-old man get like this?

2 In a recent survey of young people, 60 percent said they found it difficult to make friends ‘in real life’ compared with online. I’m way beyond being an awkward teen, but I am wired up most of the day, as are most of my friends. I go to parties, pubs and dinners, but I am there only in spirit. Far from bringing me closer to people, my phone drives me further away.

I feel isolated. During working hours, I chatter away on social-networking sites, delaying tasks. I am in a constant state of distraction. Paradoxically(矛盾地), I no longer see the very people I want to see because I have been ‘talking’ to them all day.

Last weekend, I threw a dinner party. The moment that the food arrived, one best friend aged 26 got up to make a phone call while my other best friend, 27, sat through dinner checking Twitter for football scores. 3 Social networking dominates.

The terrifying thing is that none of us can go cold turkey. 4If you’re an alcoholic, you can avoid alcohol, but how do I avoid the internet or my phone? I need it to do my job, because my employers demand that they can contact me at any time.

That's the problem with social networking. You are hardwired in, but you are always the same cool distance apart.

    A. Yet I have never felt lonelier.

    B. I dropped Facebook for six months last year, but came back because I was missing invitations.

    C. I am not alone in feeling like an island.

    D. the thrill is looking for things to listen to rather than the listening.

    E. What’s worse is that I didn’t think either was being rude.

    F. Whatever I’m doing, wherever I am, I’ll tell you about it.

  • 23、Thousands of hungry birds left the countryside of Britain in the bitter winter to find food and warmth in urban gardens. The move included species such as the redwing and the fieldfare, almost unknown outside rural areas

The hard situation of farmland birds has been revealed in the latest survey of bird populations from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds released today.

The redwing has an obvious stripe over the eye and a red flash on the flanks (侧翼), while the fieldfare has a grey head, a peach underbelly, and a distinctive dark band on the tail.

Graham Madge, the society's spokesman, says, “For many urban birdwatchers the sight of these striking species is a real treat. Many people have never imagined there being such an amazing chance.”

“Frozen ground prevented them from getting food in the countryside and they have been saved from starvation in towns,” he added.

He says the unusual sight this year somewhat tempered the frustration felt at the suffering of small garden birds such as robins and wrens. These birds are sensitive to cold and must eat almost continuously to stay alive. Data from people who took part in the society's Big Garden Birdwatch recorded sightings in 280,000 gardens during the last weekend of January, with the goldcrest down 75 percent, the longtailed tit down 27 percent, and the coal tit down 20 percent. The study highlighted the need for food to be left out for birds during winter.

The redwing and the fieldfare are relatively unknown outside the eastern part of the country. The research shows, however, that they moved to the other side of the country where the climate is generally mild in winter and that many for the first time have reached Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. The number of redwing sightings was up 185 percent, those of the fieldfare 73, and of the yellowhammer 68.

Another surprise garden “guest” this year was the blackcap. This robinsized, silvergrey bird was rare in Britain 50 years ago, but increasing numbers now arrive each year from Germany and Austria.

【1】How did the urban birdwatchers probably feel when seeing the hungry birds?

    A. Excited.   B. Worried.

    C. Annoyed.   D. Motivated.

【2】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “tempered”?

    A. Prevented.     B. Relieved.

    C. Explained.   D. Increased.

【3】According to the passage, Cornwall is perhaps ________.

    A. a village in eastern Britain

    B. a city in western Britain

    C. a village in western Britain

    D. a city in eastern Britain

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. The tough living conditions of some British birds.

    B. The various species of Britain's garden birds.

    C. The changes of some bird's population in Britain.

    D. Unusual bird visitors in Britain's urban gardens.

  • 24、   From family to strangers on the subway and public figures on 24-hour news cycles, humans recognize an astonishing number of 5,000 faces, scientists said Wednesday. The study by scientists at Britain's University of York found that our brain allows us to process the thousands of faces we encounter in busy social environments, on our smart phones and our television screens every day.

"In everyday life, we are used to identifying friends, colleagues, and celebrities, and many other people by their faces" Rob Jenkins, from York's Department of Psychology. "But no one can tell how many faces people actually know."

For the study, Jenkins and his team asked participants to write down as many faces they could remember from their personal lives. The volunteers were then asked to do the same with people they recognized but did not know personally. They were also shown thousands of images of famous people and asked which ones they recognized. The team found an enormous range of the number of faces each participant could recall, from roughly 1,000— 10,000. "We found that people know around 5 ,000 faces on average,' Jenkins said.

The team said it believes this figure—the first ever baseline of human " facial vocabulary", could aid the development of facial recognition software increasingly used at airports and criminal investigations. It may also help scientists better understand cases of mistaken identity.

While the team said it was focused on how many faces humans actually know, they said it might be possible for some people to continue learning to recognize an unlimited number of faces, given enough practice. They pointed out that the brain has an almost limitless capacity to memorize words and languages—the limits on these instead come from study time and motivation.

The range of faces recognized by participants went far beyond what may have been useful: for thousands of years humans would likely only have met a few dozen people throughout their lives.

Jenkins said it was not clear why we developed the ability to distinguish between thousands of faces in the crowd.

"This could be another case of "overkill" that is sometimes seen in nature," Jenkins said. "The poison of some spiders can kill a horseeven though the spider has no need to eat a horse. "

1Why did Jenkins' team conduct the study?

A.To prove people's memory varies widely. B.To know how the brain processes images.

C.To measure how many faces one can identify. D.To count how many people one meets in a day.

2Who might benefit from the study?

    A.Public figures. B.Police officials. C.Aircraft commanders. D.Language trainers.

3Why the author mentioned "overkill" in the last paragraph?

A.To make the recognition ability better understood.

B.To make a comparison between human and spider.

C.To explain why our ability is useful.

D.To introduce another topic for further thinking.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.Software used in public will be improved B.Humans recognize 5,000 faces on average

C.The power of the brain is almost limitless D.The poison of some spiders can kill a horse
