  • 26、   Six months after a Chinese scientist was widely condemned for helping to make the world's first gene-edited babies, he remains out of public view, and new information suggests that others may be interested in undertaking the same kind of work outside the United States.

A clinic in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai emailed scientist He Jiankui to seek training in gene editing, Stanford University bioethicist Dr. William Hurlbut said ahead of a speech Tuesday at the World Science Festival in New York.

Hurlbut, whose advice He often sought, said He told him that scientists from multiple countries and families with inherited health problems had messaged support and interest in altering the genes of embryos(胚胎)to prevent or treat disease. Hurlbut gave The Associated Press the email the Dubai clinic sent to He in December but decided to hide the clinic's name.

"It reveals what eagerness there is out there to use this technology" and the need "for some sort of practical governance" of it, Hurlbut said.

Jennifer Doudna, a University of California, Berkeley, co-inventor of the CRISPR gene-editing tool that He used, said that she also has heard of others who want to edit embryos.

"I think they're entirely credible," she said of such reports. Doudna, who was also a speaker at the New York festival, said the field needs to focus on setting specific principles for how and when such work should proceed.

"The technology is frankly just not ready for clinical use in human embryos," although research should continue, she said. Doudna is paid by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which also supports AP's Health and Science Department.

Scientists and policy leaders have been debating how to set international standards or controls since He claimed in November that he had altered the genes of twin girls at conception(怀孕)to try to help them resist possible future infection with the AIDS virus.

Editing embryos is outlawed in many countries because it risks damaging other genes, and the DNA changes can be passed to future generations. Many scientists have condemned He's work, and attention has fallen on other scientists who knew or strongly suspected what He was doing.

1What is the email the Dubai clinic sent to He Jiankui probably about?

A.Expectation of gene editing training. B.Inherited health problems.

C.Eagerness to use the technology. D.Practical governance in need.

2Why does Doudna think that there is need to put governance on gene-editing?

A.Because there is decreasing eagerness to use the technology of altering the genes of embryos.

B.Because the clinic use of the technology in human embryos is still in inadequate preparation.

C.Because the evidence showing people's need of the technology is just completely unbelievable.

D.Because some scientists or doctors may use the technology with the aim of making profits.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.He Jiankui used to held consultations with Hurlbut on gene editing.

B.It's still illegal to edit the genes of embryos in many countries.

C.How to set international standards or controls over gene-editing is still in heated debate.

D.Doudna assisted He Jiankui by providing a tool to alter the genes of twin girls at conception.

4Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

A.He Opens a New Age in Genetics

B.The First Gene-edited Babies in the World

C.A New Method of Preventing diseases

    D.Gene-edited Babies Debate Continues

  • 27、   Communicating effectively means more than knowing what to say and when to say it. Communication involves the subtle signals your body language sends to those who are watching. Here are some common body actions and the impressions they create:

    ● Fiddling (好动) — Playing with your watch or a pen looks like you’re bored or impatient.

    ● Clock watching — It looks like you’re to move on to something else.

    ● Tapping — Tapping your feet or fingers suggests you are impatient or nervous.

    ● Staring — An unblinking (不眨眼的) stare conveys threatening or violent behaviour.

    ● Legs crossed or body hunched (弓背,耸肩) — Closing up your body profile — becoming smaller — looks like you lack confidence.

    ● Arms crossed — If you keep your arms folded during communication, you appear to be defending yourself against the others.

    ● Touching your face — When you have your hand in front of your mouth, you appear very shy.

    ● Rubbing your nose, looking away — People who are lying often rub their nose or look away when speaking.

    ● No eye contact — If you won’t look the other speaker in the eye, you seem to have low interest or a lack of confidence. (Don’t forget staring above.)

How you communicate with your body language is just as important as what you say. Watch your body language and control the unconscious messages you might be sending.

1According to the passage, effective communication includes all of the following EXCEPT _____.

    A.knowing what to say

B.sending unconscious messages to other people

C.saying the right thing at the right time

D.getting information from the other speaker’s body language

2Which of the following people looks shy according to the passage?

    A. B.

    C. D.

3If you want to show confidence when communicating, you should ______.

A.cross your legs or hunch your body

    B.avoid direct eye contact

C.look the other speaker in the eye

    D.keep touching your face

4Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

A.How to make a good impression on others

    B.Can you read body language?

C.Control your body language for effective communication

D.How to send effective information through body language

  • 28、   The Alpha Go program’s victory is an example of how smart computers have become.

But can artificial intelligence (AI) machines act ethically—can they be honest and fair?

One example of AI is driverless cars. They are already on California roads, so it is not too soon to ask whether we can program a machine to act ethically. As driverless cars improve, they will save lives. They will make fewer mistakes than human drivers do. Sometimes, however, they will face a choice between lives. Should the cars be programmed to avoid hitting a child running across the road, even if that will put their passengers at risk? What about making a sudden turn to avoid a dog? What if the only risk is damage to the car itself, no to the passengers?

Perhaps there will be lessons to learn from driverless cars, but they are not super-intelliger beings. Teaching ethics to a machine even more intelligent than we are will be the bigger challenge.

About the same time as AlphaGo’s victory, Microsoft’s ‘chatbot’ took a bad turn. The software, named Taylor, was designed to answer messages from people aged 18-24. Taylor was supposed to be able to learn from the messages she received. She was designed to slowly improve her ability to handle conversations, but some people were teaching Taylor racist ideas. When she started saying nice things about Hitler, Microsoft turned her off and deleted her ugliest messages.

Alpha Go’s victory and Taylor’s defeat happened at about the same time. This should be a warning to us. It is one thing to use AI within a game with clear rules and clear goals. It is something very different to use AI in the real world. The unpredictability of the real world may bring to the surface a troubling software problem.

Eric Schmidt is one of the bosses of Google, which own AlphaGo. He thinks AI will be positive for humans. He said people will be the winner, whatever the outcome. Advances in AI will make human beings smarter, more able and “just better human beings.”

1What does the author want to show with the example of AlphaGo’s victory?

    A.Computers will win human beings.

    B.Computers have unmatched potential.

C.Computers are man’s potential opponents (对手).

    D.Computers can become highly intelligent.

2What is said to be the bigger challenge facing humans in the AI age?

A.How to make super-intelligent AI machines share human feelings.

B.How to ensure that super-intelligent AI machines act ethically.

C.How to prevent AI machines doing harm to humans.

D.How to avoid being over-dependent on AI machines.

3What do we learn about Microsoft’s ‘chatbot’ Taylor?

A.She could not distinguish good from bad.

B.She could turn herself off when necessary.

C.She was not made to handle strange situations.

D.She was good at performing routine tasks.

4What does Eric Schmidt think of artificial intelligence?

A.It will be far superior to human beings.

B.It will keep improving as time goes by.

C.It will prove to be valuable to human beings.

D.It will be here to stay whatever the outcome.

  • 29、   Rats that eat high levels of a natural sugar known as fructose(果糖)seem to age faster than other rats-and the same could be true for people who eat too much sweet junk food, Israeli researchers said Monday.

Fructose, found naturally in honey and fruit, is used widely in foods ranging from soft drinks to yogurt. But while its sweet taste is popular, the sugar could cause wrinkles, the researchers said. Dr. Moshe Werman and Boaz Levi of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology fed large amounts of fructose to laboratory rats. Writing in the Journal of Nutrition, they said the fructose-fed rats showed changes in the collagen(胶原蛋白)of their skin and bones. Collagen basically holds the body together. The loss of collagen is what causes loose skin and deep wrinkles in older people.

The process affected, Werman's team said, is known as cross-linking(交叉相连). "Too much cross-linking makes the skin stiff, and these are the conditions that encourage wrinkled skin," Werman said in a statement. He said the same could be true of people, although this has not been shown. "Americans are eating more and more processed foods such as baked goods, canned fruits, jams and dairy products that contain fructose," Werman said. Other studies have shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes(糖尿病).

The rats Werman worked with were fed much more than the average adult person might eat in a day, which is standard in such experiments. The rats were fed 19.5 grams of fructose per kg of weight every day for a year.

1In the experiments, if a rat was 0.25 kg, it may have been fed about   grams of fructose every day for a year.

    A.3 B.4

    C.5 D.6

2What is the reason why older people have deep wrinkles?

A.They don't drink enough water every day.

B.Collagen in their body is missing.

C.They don't take enough exercise every day.

    D.They like eating sugar.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.The rats in Werman’s lab ate much more sugar than an ordinary adult might eat in a day.

B.Too much cross-linking makes the skin soft.

C.The fructose-fed rats only showed changes in the collagen of their skin.

D.It hasn't been shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes.

4The best title for the passage should be “ ” .

A.Sugar — it could reduce collagen B.Sugar — it could age you

C.Collagen — it could cause wrinkles D.Collagen — it could age you

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

  • 37、Directions: Complete the following sentences by using the proper form of the words or expressions given in the frame. Each one can only be used once.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.
