二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It was a rainy day. I had no desire to drive up the winding mountain road to my daughter Carolyn's house. But she had insisted that I come to see something at the top of the mountain.

So here I was, although unwilling to make the two-hour journey through fog and rain. After lunch, my daughter requested me to drive her to Barage. After a ten-minute drive, we parked the car and got out. We walked along a path that was thick with old pine needles. Huge black green evergreens towered over us. Gradually the peace and silence of the place began to fill my mind. Then we turned a comer and stopped--and I gasped in amazement.

From the top of the mountain to the slopes and valleys, were rivers of daffodils(水仙) in full bloom. A sea of amazing colors, like a carpet before us. It looked as though the sun had tipped over and spilled gold down the mountainside. At the center hung a waterfall of purple hyacinths. Here and there were breathtaking tulips(郁金香).

A lot of questions filled my mind. Who created such beauty? Why? How?

As we approached the home that stood in the center of the property, we saw a sign that read, "Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking". The first answer was:"One Woman--Two Hands, Two Feet, and Very Little Brain." The second was: "One at a Time." The third: "Started in 1958."

I was so moved by what we had seen. "She changed the world," I said, not getting over the shock, "one bulb (球茎) at a time. She started almost 40 years ago, probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it."

"Imagine," I added, "if I had a vision and worked at it, just a little bit every day, what might I have accomplished?"

Carolyn looked sideways at me, smiling. "Start tomorrow," she said. "Better yet, start today."

  • 27、Do you know that truck driving is one of the unhealthiest professions? Obesity, high blood pressure, limited physical activity, fewer than six hours of sleep per day … In a national survey, 61 percent of long-haul truck drivers have two or more of these health issues. I know what that’s like because for nearly four years, I was a truck driver for Prime Inc., one of the largest trucking companies in America.

Now I do something different: I’m the driver health and fitness coach for Prime, an unusual occupation, especially for a Yale graduate with a philosophy degree. So how did I end up here? Because I’ve never done what was expected.

When I was a kid, I went in the sport of swimming. I kept winning all those years. The culmination (巅峰) of my swimming career was at our meet against Harvard and Princeton University when I was at Yale. We ended up winning the relay and, with it, a share of the Ivy championship.

But I didn’t go all the way down the road. By nature I wanted to explore the world and find out who I was meant to be, so for the next 15 years, I traveled Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, working odd jobs. In my mid-thirties, I was tired of scraping by (勉强维持). I couldn’t imagine myself in a nine-to-five office job. A friend who was a truck driver suggested I try his line of work. Then I signed up with Prime Inc.

I’d weighed 140 pounds all my adult life, but in just two months of driving, I’d gained 15 pounds. I definitely wasn’t feeling good. In trucking, it’s all about the delivery schedule. Every second counts. How was I going to fit in working out?

There was only one fix. Anytime I had a few minutes, I worked out. Burpees (立卧撑), mountain climbers, jump-tucks … Some drivers came up to me and said, “Man, I really need to be doing this. Can you show me?” Then I realized my new routine wasn’t just for me. It meant to help other people find their way to health.

Soon I drew up a proposal and became the in-house health and fitness coach in Prime. For once, I’m doing what’s expected of me. And I’ve never felt more fulfilled.

【1】What can we know about the author?

A.He once went to Yale to compete as an athlete.

B.He suffered a lot before serving as a truck driver.

C.He possessed a remarkable talent for swimming.

D.He initially had a prejudice against truck drivers.

【2】Why did the author travel around for 15 years?

A.He needed a sense of achievement.

B.He wanted to stand out among peers.

C.He decided to find out who he wanted to be.

D.He wanted to acquire more wealth during traveling.

【3】What does the underlined part “new routine” in paragraph 6 refer to?

    A.Controlling the rapid weight gain.

B.Making the most of time to work out.

C.Keeping a balance between work and life.

D.Avoiding working in a tight delivery schedule.

【4】Which of the following best describes the author?

    A.Dutiful and devoted.

    B.Expressive and generous.

    C.Unusual and caring.

    D.Ambitious and unchangeable.

  • 28、Girls should take part in competitive sport to build confidence, the leader of a group of girls’schools will argue this week. Helen Fraser, director of the Girls Day School Trust (GDST), will tell the group that sport can help girls cope with failure.

“All girls and not just the sporty ones should take physical exercise”, Ms Fraser will say. Research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying, she argues. Ms Fraser will tell the group that she backs “sport for all”. “That’s why I love it when our schools have A, B, C and D teams and beyond”, she will say.

The GDST draws on research from the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation which suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet basic levels(水平)of activity each week. One in five girls do no activity at all, twice the proportion (比例)of boys, the research suggests.

Ms Fraser says other research suggests that more than 80% of women business leaders played sports while growing up. She uses the examples of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, once a skater and tennis player, while the head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, was in the French national swimming team. Ms Fraser says Olympic medallists like Jessica Ennis, Katherine Grainger and Nicola Adams are excellent role models for young women but says women’s sport needs more money and more news reports.

Valerie Dunsford, head of Sheffield High School, part of GDST, said it was important to offer a large number of sports to attract different types of girls. “Not everyone wants to be out playing the hockey (曲棍球)”, said Ms Dunsford.

【1】Which of the following ideas would Ms Fraser agree with?

A.Those taking part in the sport are always failures.

B.More should be done to make girls do sports.

C.Girls are less confident than boys.

D.Boys are born to be sport lovers.

【2】What’s the proportion of boys who never take exercise?

    A.1/10.

    B.1/4.

    C.1/5.

    D.2/5.

【3】Ms Fraser mentions those famous women to show ________

    A.hard work will pay off.

B.it’s not easy to be great.

C.sport can help girls to succeed.

D.it’s necessary to balance work and sport.

【4】What’s the purpose of the text?

A.To explain the key to success.

B.To show the importance of sport.

C.To introduce more games to girls.

D.To encourage more girls to do sports.

  • 29、For humans, adapting to climate change is mostly a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-designed houses may help ameliorate the condition in the warmer world. However, animals will have to rely on changing their behaviour or their bodies.

The most commonly observed response to climate change is a change in the timing of life cycle events like migration. A report says from 1971 to 2021, 9 out of 17 birds species have faced longer migrations, particularly Orphean Warbler (布鲁氏林莺) traveling through the Sahara Desert. Their annual voyages increase by as much as 400 kilometers.

A new study published by Sara Ryding, a professor at Deakin University, shows that climate change is already changing the bodies of many animal species, giving them bigger beaks (鸟喙), ears, arms and legs. Sara’s team further finds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger parts of body than those in cold regions. This is because such adaptations can make an animal’s surface area larger, helping it to give off extra heat. For example, when compared with their Arctic relatives, Fennec foxes, which are native to the Sahara desert, have larger ears.

Worryingly, Dr. Sara pointed out the climate is changing at a pace that leaves most animal species unable to adapt quickly enough. That means climate change still may put most species at risk, threatening their survival and even affecting ecological system. It seems clear that the world of the future is going to be hotter than humans and animals are used to. It’s increasingly urgent to act now. Not only for us human beings, but for our neighbors —— animals!

【1】What does the underlined word “ameliorate” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Cause.

    B.Improve.

    C.Achieve.

    D.Worsen.

【2】What do we know about warm-blooded animals according to the text?

A.They are less likely to migrate further.

B.They have larger body parts in hot seasons.

C.They adapt better and have no risk of survival.

D.They make body surface bigger to release heat.

【3】Why did Sara’s team do this research?

    A.To study typical animals’ behaviour.

B.To stress the importance of protecting animals.

C.To compare the adaptation of humans and animals.

D.To study the influence of climate change on animals.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、

Attitudes toward new technologies often fall along generational lines. That is, generally, younger people tend to 1 older people on the front end of a technological shift.

It is not always the case, though. When you look at attitudes toward driverless cars, there doesn't seem to be a clear 2 divide. The public overall is split on whether they'd like to use a driverless car. In a study last year, of all people surveyed, 48 percent said they wanted to ride in one, while 50 percent did not.

The fact that attitudes toward self-driving cars appear to be so 3 across generations suggests how transformative the shift to driverless cars could be. Not everyone wants a driverless car now-and no one can get one vet-but among those who are open to them, every age group is 4 engaged.

Actually, this isn't surprising. Whereas older generations are sometimes reluctant to adopt new technologies, driverless cars 5 real value to these age groups, especially to those with 6 mobility or difficulty driving on their own.

This is especially interesting when you consider that younger people are generally more interested in travel-related 7 than older ones.

When it comes to driverless cars, differences in attitude are more 8 based on factors not related to age. College graduates, for example, are particularly interested in driverless cars compared with those who have less education59 percent of college graduates said they would like to use a driverless car compared with 38 percent of those with a high-school diploma or less.

Where a person lives 9 too. More people who lived in cities and suburbs said they wanted to try driverless cars than those who lived in rural areas.

While there's reason to believe that interest in self-driving cars is going up across the board, a person's age will have little to do with how self-driving cars can become 10. Once driverless cars are actually available for sale, the early adopters will be the people who can afford to buy them.
