二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Lee hyun-seok grew up in South Korea addicted to Japanese manga (漫画) series such as “Dragon Ball” and “Slam Dunk”. As soon as he could, he migrated to Tokyo to build a successful career as a manga artist and editor. Then in the early 2000s came “webtoons” (网络漫画), a South Korean cartoon innovation optimized for smartphones. Mr. Lee was at first unimpressed. Compared with manga’s inventive graphic styles and profound plots, he found webtoons just the opposite.

Yet Japanese manga is being eclipsed (黯然失色) by Korean webtoons. Last year the manga print market shrank by 2.3% to ¥265bn ($1.9bn). The size of the global webtoons market was meanwhile valued at $3.7bn. Manga is going digital slowly, in part because it is still designed for print, so awkward to read on smartphones. Seeing which way the wind was blowing, Mr. Lee abandoned manga for the webtoon industry in 2014.

Though webtoons such as “Itaewon Class” and “Solo Levelling” have become popular among Japanese consumers, most Japanese publishers have stuck stubbornly to manga. “The Japanese industry is very conservative,” sighs Mr. Lee. The manga industry’s business model, in which stories are first published in weekly magazines and then in books, has hardly changed since the 1960s. Webtoons have grown so fast, in part because they can be read more easily. Other recent South Korean exports, such as the Netflix sensation “Squid Game” and BTS, a boy band, have taken the world by storm thanks to the same combination of innovation and smart marketing behind webtoons.

Some are concerned about the future. Japan’s manga fans are, like all its population, aging. The average reader of the Weekly Shonen Magazine, a manga for children launched in 1989, is now over 30. “Manga could end up as old people’s culture,” warns Mr Lee. “Children these days are viewing through webtoons on their smartphones. Why not make something that suits their taste?”

【1】What did Mr Lee think of “webtoons” in the early 2000s?

    A.He considered it as inventive.

    B.He considered it as attractive.

    C.He considered it as original.

    D.He considered it as shallow.

【2】Why does the author mention numbers in paragraphs 2 ?

A.To confirm the advantages of smartphones.

B.To share the popularity of Japanese manga.

C.To introduce the influence of webtoons industry on Japanese manga.

D.To compare Mr. Lee’s career as an artist and an editor.

【3】What can we learn from Japanese manga?

A.Japanese manga can be read more easily.

B.Since the 1960s, the manga has grown so fast.

C.The manga industry is unwilling to transform.

D.“Squid Game” was adopted from Japanese manga.

【4】What is Mr. Lee’s attitude towards manga’s future?

    A.Worried.

    B.Aggressive.

    C.Confident.

    D.Annoyed.

  • 27、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Bicycles, roller skates and skateboards are dangerous. I still have scars on my knees from my childhood run-ins with various wheeled devices. Admittedly, I was a foolish kid, but I’m glad I didn’t spend my childhood trapped indoors to protect me from every bump and bruise.

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” 1 And now technology has become the new field for the age-old battle between adults and their freedom-seeking kids.

Locked indoors, unable to get on their bicycles and hang out with their friends, teens have turned to social media and their mobile phones to gossip and socialize with their friends. What they do online often mirrors what they might otherwise do if their mobility weren’t so heavily restricted in the age of helicopter parenting. Social media and smart phones have become so popular in recent years. 2.

As teens have moved online, parents have projected their fears onto the Internet, imagining all the potential dangers that youth might face-from violent strangers to cruel peers to pictures or words that could haunt them on Google for the rest of their life.

Rather than helping teens develop strategies to deal with public life and the potential risks of interacting with others, fearful parents have focused on tracking, monitoring and blocking. 3 “Protecting” kids may feel like the right thing to do, but it denies teens the chances of learning as they come of age in a technology-soaked world,

The key to helping youth in the modern digital life isn’t more restrictions. It’s freedom— plus communication. Urban theorist Jane Jacobs used to argue that the safest neighborhoods were those where communities collectively took interest in and paid attention to what happened on the streets. Safety didn’t come from surveillance cameras or keeping everyone indoors but from a collective willingness to watch out for one another and be present as people struggled. The same is true online.

What makes the digital street safe is when teens and adults collectively agree to open their eyes and pay attention, communicate and work together to deal with difficult situations. Teens need the freedom to wander the digital street, but they also need to know that caring adults are behind them and supporting them wherever they go. The first step is to turn off the tracking software.4.

    A. Safety didn’t come from keeping everyone indoors.

    B. But parents can’t handle it when teenagers put this theory into practice.

    C. Then ask your kids what they’re doing when they’re online and why it’s so important to them.

    D. Teens want the freedom to explore their identity and the world around them, so they jump online.

    E. These don’t help teens develop the skills they need to manage complex social situations, assess risks and get help when they’re in trouble.

    F. The safest neighborhood were those where communities collectively took interest in and paid attention to what happened on the streets.

  • 28、If you’ve logged on to any social media app this week, you’ve probably seen pictures of your friends, but they are re-imagined as fairy princesses, handsome princes, and charming characters. It is all because of Lensa, an app which uses artificial intelligence to present digital portraits based on photos users submit.

Lensa recommends users submit 10-20 selfies for the best results. The pictures should be close-up of your face with a variety of different backgrounds, facial expressions, and angles. A yearlong subscription to the app, which also provides photo editing services, costs $35.99. But you can use the app for a weeklong free trial if you want to test it out before committing.

To test out the app, I took 20 selfies I thought showed a variety of expressions and angles and submitted. It took around 20 minutes for Lensa to return my portraits, which fell into several categories: fantasy, fairy princess, focus, pop, stylish, light, kawaii, and cosmic. In general, I felt like the app did a decent job producing artistic images based on my selfies.

Other users have documented unfavorable experiences which come from their Lensa images. Aubrey Gordon, a writer and fat rights activist, wrote on her Instagram the app produced images which made her look much thinner than she actually is. “Lensa is really working overtime to make AI me into a thin person,” she wrote in the caption.

Several of the artists expressed concern the apps could also threaten their livelihoods. Digital artists cannot compete with the low prices and fast turnaround artificial intelligence enables for a digital portrait, they said at the time.

Lensa’s owner Prisma has tried to relieve anxiety that digital artists will be robbed of work opportunities owing to the technology. “While both humans and AI learn about artistic styles in semi-similar ways, there are some fundamental differences: AI is capable of rapidly analyzing and learning from large sets of data, but it does not have the same level of attention and appreciation for art as a human being.”

【1】What can be learned about Lensa?

A.It is a tool that stores photos.

B.It is a photo trading platform.

C.It is an app that takes photos.

D.It aims to offer customized photos.

    【2】What impressed the author most?

    A.The low price of Lensa.

    B.The wide popularity of Lensa.

    C.The artistic images Lensa made.

D.The speed at which Lensa makes photos.

【3】Why does Aubrey Gordon disapprove of Lensa?

    A.Because it is time-consuming.

B.Because it is friendly to the thin.

    C.Because it presents unrealistic photos.

D.Because it is posing a threat to her job.

    【4】What does Prisma imply?

    A.Lensa cannot replace human artists.

B.Lensa will give a hand to digital artists.

    C.Lensa needs further improvement.

D.Lensa is good at data analysis.

  • 29、Multispectral cameras (多光谱摄像机) keep a watch on the polluted Ganges (恒河), where thousands of people suffer from water-borne diseases by the river.

The 1.500-mile-long Ganges originates in the Himalayan range and snakes across to the coastal state of West Bengal. In Rishikesh, the river is still relatively clear, but when it reaches the city of Kanpur, the Ganges turns a deep grey with raw waste and is faced with serious pollution. 764 industries along the river consume 1,123 million liters of water and flow back about half that volume as wastes.

Large-scale plans ever launched to clean the river prove unsatisfying. due to a lack of a clear understanding of what pollutants are in the water and how they affect it.

Dipro has been working on high tech solutions to the first survey and the analysis of the pollutants. To collect data on the water composition. he sent a plane into the sky, fitted with four multispectral cameras that use sensors to remotely monitor pollutants in the river, which create a long pathway easily studied from the sky. The reflection of lights from the surface of the liquid depends on the amount of various matters in it. At a higher concentration, these changes are visible to naked eyes, but in low concentrations, he uses specialized optical filters (光学过滤) and calculations to separate the wavelengths of light being reflected. Sometimes he creates false color composite images, which add color to the wavelengths to better distinguish different parts of the liquid with concentrations of floating pollutants. People can trace them back to the sources accurately and identify the polluters responsible.

When asked to develop this remote sensing method further to handle polluters better from the sky. Dipro says, "With new and affordable drones (无人机) available in the market, anyone can send one up and help collect relevant data."

【1】What's the main idea of paragraph 2?

A.The link between the Himalaya and the river.

B.The development of industries along the river.

    C.The formation of the Ganges

    D.Severe pollution of the Ganges

【2】What does the underlined word "them" refer to in the passage?

    A.Wavelengths of light.

    B.Floating pollutants

    C.False images.

    D.Different parts of the liquid.

【3】What can be inferred from Dipro's words?

A.More drones will be adopted to address river pollution.

B.It's everyone's duty to engage in the work of drones.

C.Drones perform perfectly in river pollution control.

D.Drones serve as a must for a better environment

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.How to Operate Multispectral Cameras

B.How to Clean Ganges from the Sky

    C.Dipro's Ambitious Invention

    D.Ganges' Serious Pollution

Maggie sat in the attic (阁楼), hugging her doll and thinking about Tom. She was very excited because Tom was coming home from the Academy. She missed him when he was away at school and always counted the days until he would come home for the holidays. Now that he was coming home, they would have lots of fun. They would go fishing. They would take long walks along the river. There was only one thing that made her upset: she was worried about the rabbits. Tom had told her to take care of his rabbits while he was away, but she had forgotten and the rabbits had died. How could she tell Tom? He would be angry.

Just then she heard the sound of the carriage coming. She threw her doll on the floor and ran out. Her mother and father were already outside. Instantly Tom got out of the carriage, Mrs. Tulliver threw her arms around his neck and cried, “There you are, my sweet boy!” Then Maggie gave him such a tight hug that his face went pink.

“Hello, mom. Hello, Maggie!” said Tom.

Mr. Tulliver shook Tom's hand, and they all went in for lunch. As soon as lunch was over, Tom turned to his sister and said, “Let’s go, Maggie.”

Maggie jumped up and delighted to go anywhere with Tom, and holding hands, they ran out of the house. They ran through the fields together, climbing over fences and splashing (溅起水花) through the mud. As they passed by a tree near the river, a lovely bird, singing merrily in it, caught their attention.

Having enjoyed the bird’s song, Tom said abruptly, “Well, let’s go to see the rabbits, Maggie. I hope you took good care of them.”

Maggie looked up at Tom’s face with anxiety. “Please don’t be annoyed with me, Tom.” She said.

“What do you mean? What’s happened to the rabbits?” he demanded in an angry voice.

“I’m sorry, Tom. I just forgot about them, and now they’re all dead.”

Tom’s face went red with anger. “I don’t love you, Maggie.” he yelled.

“Oh, Tom, don’t say that.” begged Maggie. “I’m sorry. It was an accident, Tom. Please forgive me.”

“No, I won’t forgive you. You are a naughty girl. Just go away and leave me alone!”
