26、Heads turned, tears dropped, and gossip-filled whispers went on and on from the hospital passages to the house windows. There was a problem: a daughter had been born. She wasn’t the first disappointment born to her family. Although my aunt didn’t care about giving birth to a girl, her mother-in-law constantly reminded her of the criticism she would have to face if she gave birth to a daughter. In India, most people held these views.
When I visited my relatives during the summer, one sentence managed to fill me with anger and start arguments with my so-called relatives. “You are a girl, stay within your limits.” They simply don’t know how different it is living in the US. Anyway, comparisons to my cousins led me to end the arguments for the moment and accept the way they lived their lives.
My words didn’t make sense to them so my mind was set on proving them wrong.
Although their words didn’t tear me apart, their actions managed to. The amount of sexism(性别歧视) in this culture, especially my hometown, made me feel bad. It was the 21st century, yet women had to eat after the men at family gatherings. They had to cook all the family meals and were asked to take jobs that required little skill or education. It was time to change these views.
As I was growing older, the same relatives repeatedly questioned me about my future: “What do you want to be?” And the answer was always the same:electrical engineer. I have a passion for electronics; as clichéd(陈词滥调的) as it sounds, I was born to do it. When I connect wires together to repair something, I can’t contain my excitement. But when I tried to explain this to my relatives, all of them, except for my parents and grandparents, would be shocked and laugh at me — laugh because they didn’t think I could live up to my goals, being a “girl and all”. It was time to change these views.
In my world, being a girl is not a problem. Rather, it is an opportunity to allow passion, not stereotypes(成见), to shape my future. I decided to channel my relatives’ views into positive energy. Rather than letting them bring me down, I let them be motivation to achieve my goal of becoming an engineer. I, a female, will become a successful engineer.

27、Children are known to be very keen observers and once they are interested in something, it is very likely to stay with them for life. They tend to look at life through the eyes of the person they are close to or want to be like. If their role model is optimistic, there are more chances of them optimistic. The role model becomes their standard of measurement.
Because they follow the actions of their role models so closely, children adopt the personality and attitude of their role models. Children learn to like or dislike certain things by mimicking the personality and attitude of the people they admire.
One reason why children keep changing their answers to “what would you like to be when you grow up” is that they are influenced by individuals in a certain field.
Children view the social relationships (family or public) mainly in the light of the importance these relationships hold in the life of their role models. Their expression of their feelings is many times a reflection of their role model’s outlook.
According to a study, around 56% of teenagers identified with the role models. Out of these, those having personal or direct contact with their role models had higher self-esteem and were better at academics compared to those who didn’t. As such, children who have positive role models, have more self-confidence and are more optimistic about their future. They learn to handle themselves well in social settings and positively interact with those around them.
Of course, children who have their parents as positive role models have a well-rounded outlook towards life. They find it easier to deal with the highs and lows of life because they have seen their parents do it before. They find a sense of stability and security knowing that they will overcome failures just like their parents before them. Besides, it becomes easier for parents to discipline and guide children. So it is no wonder why children who have parents as their role models have fewer behavioral issues.

28、Midway through The Matrix, Cypher feasts on an enormous steak, well aware that his reality is not real, part of a digital program telling his brain that the steak is a construction and that it is “juicy and delicious.” Two decades after the movie made its first appearance, something unexpected arises: The future of reality will not only be virtual but also synthetic (合成的). Cypher’s future meal will be a physical one, synthesized from animal cells.
And the synthesis goes beyond dinner. Starting with components from the natural world, scientists are learning to engineer microorganisms and build biocomputing systems. However, biology has a tendency to evolve in unexpected ways.
Synthesized meat is one case in point. The driving forces behind the meat movement are practical. It has been estimated that cultured (培育的) meat would require 7 to 45 percent less energy and produce 78 to 96 percent less greenhouse gas than conventional animals farmed for consumption. But once we’re able to synthesize meat, theoretically, we’ll have the capability to culture meat from any animal, even those we’d never consider eating today, like dolphins or chimpanzees, which will pose a new regulatory challenge for us.
Using synthetic biology, we can even edit and rewrite life, the technology of which are already in use. In 2021, scientists in some countries announced they had grown monkey embryos injected with human stem cells. Here comes the situation worth considering: such a monkey-human hybrid will demonstrate qualities that are somewhere between humans, on which experimentation isn’t allowed, and animals, which are often raised specifically for research. How will we decide when an animal becomes too human?
Depending on where you stand, the synthetic realities land somewhere between “really exciting” and “critically concerning.” As individuals, we undertake a shared responsibility to make good choices about this coming synthetic technology.
【1】What do we know about Cypher’s steak in the movie?
A.It is anything but appetizing.
B.It is enjoyed in a virtual world.
C.It is synthesized from animal cell.
D.It is a construction made by himself.
【2】What’s the advantage of synthesized meat?
A.It is more nutritious.
B.It is more energy-consuming.
C.It is more environment-friendly.
D.It is more controllable in regulation.
【3】What is the author’s attitude to the experiment in Paragraph 4?
A.Cautious.
B.Favorable.
C.Pessimistic.
D.Indifferent.
【4】What is the purpose of the text?
A.To popularize synthetic technology.
B.To indicate challenges of synthetic technology.
C.To stress the importance of synthetic technology.

29、 Although ethics(道德)lessons are common around the world, scientists are unsure if the lessons can actually change behavior. But a new study found that a single ethics lesson may have had lasting effects.
The researchers investigated one lesson’s impact on eating meat. They chose this particular behavior for three reasons, according to study co-author Eric, a philosopher at the University of California: students’ attitudes on the topic are variable, behavior is easily measurable, and eating less meat is good because it reduces environmental harm and animal suffering. The researchers studied students in four classes. Half of them read an article on the ethics of factory-farmed meat, watched an 11-minute video on the topic and joined a 50-minute discussion. The other half focused on charitable giving instead. Then, the researchers studied their meal-card purchases for that semester-nearly 14,000 receipts(收据)for almost 500 students. “It’s an awesome data set,” says Nina Strohminger, a psychologist who teaches business ethics and was not involved in the study.
For students who discussed meat ethics, meal purchases containing meat decreased from 52 to 45 percent-and this effect held steady for the study’s duration of several weeks. Purchases from the other group remained at 52 percent.
“That’s actually a pretty large effect for a pretty small intervention,” Eric says. Strohminger agrees, “The thing that still blows my mind is that just one ethics lesson should have such an obvious effect.”
Eric believes the greatest impact came from classmates or teaching assistants leading the discussions. Second, the video may have had an emotional impact. Least influential, he thinks was argument. Now the researchers are investigating the specific effects of teaching style teachers’ eating habits and students’ video exposure.
【1】How did the researchers carry out the study?
A.By making a comparison. B.By introducing a concept.
C.By presenting an argument. D.By referring to another study.
【2】What does the underlined phrase “blows my mind” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Annoys me. B.Surprises me. C.Bothers me. D.Frightens me.
【3】According to Eric, what may have the least effect on students’ meat purchases?
A.Argument. B.Teaching style. C.Teaching assistants. D.The video exposure.
【4】What is the purpose of the study?
A.To improve students’ lifestyles.
B.To call on students to eat less meat.
C.To encourage students to take ethics lessons.
D.To tell the effects of ethics lessons on behavior.

32、阅读以下短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
There was once a beautiful town in which there were a couple of lovers who would often stay together on the top of the mountain enjoying the sunrise and by the sea appreciating the sunset. Everyone who knew them could not help envying them and praying for their happy love.
But one day, the man was severely injured and lying in bed in hospital for several days without any consciousness. The woman guarded him by the bed in daytime, calling his name constantly while at night, she would go to the church and pray to God until her tears ran up.
A week passed by and the man was still sleeping. The woman was exhausted, but she persisted. One day, the God was finally moved by her love and persistence and would like to do her a special favor.
God asked her, “Do you really want to exchange your lover’s life with yours? The woman answered without the least hesitation,” “Yes” God said, “All right. I can help your lover recover quickly on the condition that you should promise to be a butterfly for three years. Do you agree with the deal?” She said excitedly and firmly, “Yes, I do!”
The next day, the woman became a beautiful butterfly and said goodbye to God, flying hurriedly to the hospital. It turned out that the man came to his consciousness and woke up, talking with a doctor. She could not hear what they were talking about because she could not fly into the house. What she could do was watch her beloved through the windows helplessly.
After several days, the man entirely recovered and went out of hospital. However, he was unhappy and asking every passer-by for the woman’s information, but no one knew where the woman went. The man searched her persistently without eating and resting. So much did he miss her that he was eager to see her immediately. Never did he know that the woman had turned into a butterfly that was flying around him all the time. She could not speak to or hug him. She could only bear the suffering that he did not realize her existence.
