  • 29、   Most city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this massive metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 but it was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed.

But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. The idea to change the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a community meeting to decide how to decide the fate of the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a half of wild flowers growing in the middle of the cityand they realized that the High Line had potential (潜力) to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centers, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected.

The first part of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like balconies with wonderful city views. Other areas have wide lawns and walkways planted with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years—a railway line overgrown with weeds.

    1What does the underlined part“a dead weight”mean?

A.something with potential to be better B.something with historical interest

C.something useless which slows progress D.something which is a danger to people

2Why did David and Hammond want to save the High Line at first?

A.They were interested in improving the city. B.They thought it would make a good park.

C.They wanted to reopen the train line. D.They thought it had historical value.

3We can infer from the last paragraph that the park is___________.

A.various in its designs B.like natural countryside

C.similar to what it used to be D.useful to learn different plants

4What is the text mainly about?

A.Protection of cultural relics B.An unusual place for a park

    C.Improving city transport D.Closing a train line

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

As dusk falls at the Lehua Night Market, the fluorescent (荧光的) lights flicker on and the hungry customers start trickling in, anxious for a taste of the local delicacies that give this island its reputation as one of Asia’s finest cookery 1 .

Nearly arranged pyramids of plump fish balls, bowls filled with tapioca balls 2  in lightly sweetened sauce, sizzling oyster omelets, hot off the griddle, deep-fried sweet potato puffs (冒热气), still 3 with oil. Take a bite of any of these dishes and you’ll discover a unique texture. But how exactly do you 4 that perfect “mouth feel” so sought after by local cooks and eaters alike? Slippery? Chewy? Not exactly.

Luckily, the people in Taiwan have a word for this texture. Well, actually, it’s not a word, it’s a letter—one that even non-Chinese speakers can pronounce.

It’s “Q.” Basically, it means springy, soft, elastic.

Andre Chiang, a Michelin-star chef and owner of RAW in Taipei, said he has been 5 with the texture at his restaurant, which uses only local materials. “It’s like aldente (筋道) but not quite,” Mr. Chiang said.

Q is so well 6 in Taiwan that many in Hong Kong and across the Taiwan Strait in mainland China use the term as well.

There are many other uses for the term Q in Chinese as well. It could be used, for example, as short form for the English word “7”, or to refer to the once-popular QQ messaging service from Tencent.

Among the local people, the 8 for Q texture starts at a young age. On a recent sticky evening at the Lehua Night Market, a group of people gathered at stand with a sign that 9 “QQ ice lolly.” Asked why Q texture was so 10 to Taiwanese, Lu Wei-chen, the owner of the stand, smiled as she handed a bright red jelly bar to a delighted toddler.

“It’s simple,” she said. “When you eat it, you will be in a good mood.”
