二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   There are few more sobering online activities than entering data college-tuition calculators and gasping as the Web spits back a six-figure sum. But economists say families about to go into debt to fund four years of partying, as well as studying, can comfort themselves with the knowledge that college is an investment that, unlike many bank stocks, should yield huge dividends.

A 2008 study by two Harvard economists notes that the “labor-market premium to skill” to the amount college graduates earneddecreased for much of the 20th century, but he come back with a vengeance since the 1980s. In 2005, the typical full-time year-round U. S. worker with a four-year college degree earned $50,900, 62% more than $31,500 earned by a worker with only a high-school diploma.

There’s no question that going to college is a smart economic choice. But a look at the strange variations in tuition reveals that the choice about which college to attend doesn’t come down merely to dollars and cents. Does going to Columbia University (tuition, room and board $49,260 in 2007-2008) yield a 40% greater return than attending the University of Colorado at Boulder as an out-of-state student ($35,542)? Probably not. does being an out-of-state student at the University of Colorado at Boulder yield twice the amount of income as being an in-state student ($17,380) there? Not likely.

No, in this consumerist age, most buyers aren’t evaluating college as an investment, but rather as a consumer product like a car or clothes or a house. And with such purchases, price is only one of many crucial factors to consider.

As with automobiles, consumers in today’s college marketplace have vast choices, and people search for the one that gives them the most comfort and satisfaction in line with their budgets. This accounts for the willingness of people to pay more for different types of experiences (such as attending a private liberal - arts college or going to an out-of-state public school that has a great marine - biology program). And just as two auto purchasers might spend an equal amount of money on very different cars, college students (or, more accurately, their parents) often show a willingness to pay essentially the same price for vastly different products. So which is it? Is college an investment product like a stock or a consumer product like a car? In keeping with automotive worlds hottest consumer trend, maybe it’s best to characterize it as a hybrid; an expensive sunburned product that, over time, will pay rich dividends.

1What’s the opinion of economists about going to college?

A.Huge amounts of money is being wasted on campus socializing.

B.It doesn’t pay to run into debt to receive a college education.

C.College education is rewarding in spite of the shocking costs.

D.Going to college doesn’t necessarily bring the expected returns.

2The two Harvard economists note in their study that, for much of the 20th century. _______.

A.enrollment kept decreasing in virtually all American colleges and universities

B.the labor market preferred high-school to college graduates

C.competition for university admissions was far more fierce than today

D.the gap between the earnings of college and high-school graduates narrowed

3Students who attend an in-state college or university can _______.

A.save more on tuition B.receive a better education

C.take more liberal-arts courses D.avoid traveling long distances

4What is the chief consideration when students choose a college today?

A.Their employment prospects after graduation. B.A satisfying experience within their budgets .

C.Its facilities and learning environment. D.Its ranking among similar institutions.

  • 27、   The point of an apology-to express regret and repair relationships-is lost because children may dislike the apologizer even more after the insincere apology than before.

A new study looks at whether children can tell apart willingly given and forced expressions of regret-and they do. The findings suggest that exploring ways to help your child learn to have empathy (同情) for the victim (受害者), thus making sure of a sincere apology, is more  helpful than immediately forcing him to say “I’m sorry”

Smith and co-workers looked at how children aged 4-9 viewed three types of apologies among kids of the same age: unprompted (自发的) apologies, prompted but willingly given apologies, and forced apologies. They found that kids viewed willing apologies the same, whether prompted or unprompted by adults. But the forced apologies weren’t seen as effective, especially by the 7-to 9-year-olds, Smith says.

All children thought the wrongdoers felt worse after the apology than before, but the 7-to 9-year-old children thought the forced apologizers’ bad feelings were rooted in self-interest (concern about punishment, for example),rather than regret. Children of all ages also thought the victims felt better after receiving a wiling apology, but they saw the receivers of the forced apology as feeling worse than the receivers of the willing apologies.

How can parents help their young children respond with empathy after they’ve upset another person, and deliver a willing apology? “When your child is calm, help him/her see how the other person is feeling, and why,” Smith says. “An apology is one way to do it, but there are lots of other ways. Research shows that even preschoolers value it when a wrongdoer makes amends (补偿) with action. Sometimes this is more powerful than words.”

1What is the study mainly about?

A.What kids usually do to show their regret.

B.What is the best way for kids to apologize.

C.How kids in different age groups apologize.

D.What kids think of different types of apologies.

2What do the children think of the forced apology?

A.It makes both sides feel worse.

B.It calms down the victims quickly

C.It always brings punishment to wrongdoers.

D.It gets wrongdoers into the habit of telling lies.

3What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?

    A.To conclude the text.

    B.To provide more details.

    C.To offer advice.

    D.To give evidence.

4What can be the best title for the text?

A.Kids are too shy to apologize.

B.Forcing kids to apologize doesn’t benefit anybody

C.Sincere apologies win kids good relationships

D.Kids need help to make a sincere apology

  • 28、   A solar-powered car that can be charged as it runs is being tested in Germany.

Munich-based manufacturer(制造商)Sono Motors has built the new type, named Sion, and will likely help the European powerhouse hit its national target of 1 million electric cars on the road by 2020.

Sono Motors has solar cells fixed into Sion’s bodywork, with a total of 330 solar cells built into the roof, bonnet and sides of the vehicle. These enable the vehicle’s battery to be charged when sunlight is hitting the solar cells, whether it is on the road, or parked in the sunny spot in a car park.

The solar-powered vehicle is set to be launched in Germany in 2019.

Sono Motors wants Sion to be universal and allows the car to be charged using solar energy as well as conventional outlets(电源插座), so car owners aren’t left on cloudy days.

The firm has made a 2019 date for mass production, which will be undertaken(承担) by a European manufacturer. Some 6,500 people have already placed orders for the electric vehicle. Prices for Sion tend to start from € 16,000 next year. The all-electric vehicle will offer a range of around 250 km before the battery runs out completely and it needs recharging either by solar power or using a wall plug, the company said.

Sion was designed originally as an environmentally conscious car, but will also include a number of features designed around comfort to help it compete with other modern vehicles.

“We have a seat heater, air conditioning, and a large entertainment system where I can also connect my phone, which means I really have a full vehicle,” Laurin Hahn, co-founder of the company told Reuters.

1From the third paragraph we can know that .

A.the car is popular on the road B.the car has a very large battery

C.there are 330 solar cells on the car D.where there is sunlight, Sion can be charged

2What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 “launch” mean?

    A.design B.release C.improve D.recall

3Why does the car not break down when it is cloudy?

A.Because it is made from the rainproof material.

B.Because it can be charged by clouds on cloudy days.

C.Because it can store a great deal of energy.

D.Because it can be charged by conventional power outlets.

4What are the features of the car?

A.Modern, powerful and popular. B.Environmental, comfortable and competitive.

C.Environmental, cheap and simple. D.Expensive, fashionable and energy-saving.

  • 29、   Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy (星系).The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world. It was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).

The announcement was made in Washington, Brussels, Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo. Details have been published today in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Prof Heino Falckc, of Radboud University in the Netherlands, who suggested the experiment, told BBC News that the black hole was found in a galaxy called M87. "What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System," he said. "It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe."

The image shows an intensely bright "ring of fire", as Prof Falckc describes it, surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole. The bright halo is caused by very heated gas falling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined - which is why it can be seen at such distance from Earth. The edge of the dark circle at the center is the point at which the gas enters the black hole, which is an object that has such a large gravitational pull (万有引 力),not even light can escape.

"It is remarkable that the image we observe is so similar to that which we get from our theoretical calculations. So far, it looks like Einstein is correct once again." said Dr Ziri Younsi, of University College London -who is part of the EHT cooperation.

Chinese scientists were involved in the observation through a telescope in Hawaii. They were also highly involved in follow-up data processing and theoretical analysis, said Shen Zhiqiang, head of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanhai Astronomical Observatory and a member of the EHT international team.

Shanghai and Taipei were selected as two of the cities to hold news conferences, together with Washington, Brussels, Santiago and Tokyo, a recognition of China's contribution.

"In the fields of astronomy, radio astronomy, and space astrophysics, China has made a significant contribution to this global project," Falcke said.

1What is the best title for the passage?

A.First Image of a Black Hole Taken

B.How Einstein Discovered a Black Hole

C.How a Black Hole Is Formed

    D.A Book about Black Holes

2Who first got the idea for the project?

    A.Shen Zhiqiang. B.Heino Falcke.

    C.Albert Einstein. D.Ziri Younsi.

3Why are six cities selected for the announcement?

A.It was the first black hole ever discovered.

B.It took eight telescopes to work together.

C.It was a joint effort of many countries.

D.It's the heaviest of black holes.

4From the passage we know that in the experiment Chinese scientists ________.

    A.started the experiment

    B.led the experiment

    C.provided the equipment

    D.played an important role

5What does Dr Ziri Younsi tell us about black holes in Paragraph 5?

A.Black holes can swallow up everything in the Universe.

B.Scientists knew about black holes before they see them.

C.Einstein has been proved wrong many times.

D.Black holes might be some make-up stories.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

“Life of Pi” is narrated by an older Pi and takes place in the present as he tells his life story to a writer. Pi begins with how he got his name and how his family owned a zoo, but eventually leads into his family needing to leave India for financial 1. The heart of the story lies in Pi as a young man and the time he spent out at sea on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but getting to that point is quite an ordeal(苦难考验). Pi loses everything and everyone close to him in the blink of an eye and he doesn’t 2 on making what feels like an unbreakable bond with a Bengal tiger.

The 3 film offers a rather marvelous message about religion as Pi discusses the experimentation with several different religions as a young boy. Even though it seems kind of silly that a boy has 4 so many religions at one point in his life, it portrays a/an 5 message in a light that doesn’t seem too preachy(说教的). But the religious aspect is really only a backdrop for being on your own 6 to finding who you really are. Feeling so alone for so long and having Pi talk about not being alone and not getting to say goodbye to those he cared about most is one of those things that just hits you really hard.

While witnessing Pi attempt to tame Richard Parker is really 7, there are so many unbelievable sights to witness in “Life of Pi”. There’s the whale, the jellyfish, the flying fish, that 8 storm, and that seaweed island with all of the meerkats (a kind of monkey). “Life of Pi” never really lets up on being 9 breathtaking and amazing from beginning to end.

“Life of Pi” is pleasantly satisfying. With a heartfelt message, beautiful visuals, and stunning camera work. “Life of Pi” is truly a sight to behold and illustrates how 10 3D can be to a film that isn’t just a summer hit or blockbuster.
