二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Strangely enough, music is no fun at all for some people. About four percent of the population is what scientists call "amusic", People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music set them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation. "I used to hate parties," says Margaret, a seventy-year- old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic.

By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn't involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can't see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is final diagnosed. For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. "When people invite me to a concert, I just say, No, thanks, I am amusic',"says Margaret. "I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy. "

    A.By sorting documents and data.

    B.By studying people with amusic

C.By making a lot of experiments.

D.By drawing on research results of others.

【3】What does the underlined word most probably mean in the passage?

    A.detective.

    B.acute.

    C.imperfect.

    D.artificial.

【4】In the last paragraph, Margaret expressed her wish that __________

  • 27、While I was growing up, I often heard my teachers say, “Oh, Tina is gifted in algebra.” While watching the Olympics, my parents would say, “These gymnasts are born with such ability.” Statements like these made me believe people were born with certain talents and if they didn't have a particular one at birth, then they never would. Therefore, I rarely focused on algebra. Nobody told me that if you keep trying and trying, one day a difficult task will seem easy.

Actually, I learnt this from my young daughter, Samaya. One day, I was finishing some paperwork and I said, “Oh no, how could I have made that mistake!” Samaya instantly said, “Mum, don't worry. Mistakes make your brain grow bigger.”

Actually, we all need to be reminded that mistakes or failures are just fine and that they are a huge part of growth and success. However, the regular belief is the opposite. We must correct this with our children. We must encourage them to make mistakes because that means they are trying out new ideas.

Billionaire Sara Blakely, founder of the shapewear business Spanx, has seen many failures. She made a living by selling fax machines for seven years. Knocking on many doors and making a lot of mistakes was a journey she calls educational. Sara Blakely owes her risk-taking skills to the weekend talk she had with her father.

As a child, her father would ask her the same question every weekend. "What did you fail at this week, Sara?" He did not care how high her scores were. He wanted to know what she had tried but failed at. When she told him about her failures and mistakes, he would give her a high five. He was reprogramming her mind to believe that mistakes and failures are fine.

So go ahead and ask yourself and your children, “What did we fail at this week?”

【1】What discouraged the author from efforts in algebra?

    A.She wasn't interested in it.

B.She thought she was not gifted.

    C.She thought it was useless.

D.She was not allowed to learn it.

【2】What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Keep trying is necessary.

B.Failure is a path to success.

    C.Mistakes are not acceptable.

    D.Encouragement is significant.

【3】Why did Sara's father keep asking her the same question?

    A.To rebuild her mindset.

    B.To keep her from failures.

C.To know what she hadn't tried.

D.To prevent her getting high scores.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

    A.A Secret to Success

    B.A Method of Education

    C.The Magic of Mistakes

D.The Power of a Fixed Mindset

  • 28、For years I wanted a flower garden, but with five children I was too busy to have one. Money was limited(有限的), and so was time. Often one of the children would want something that cost too much, and I would say, “Do you see a money tree outside? Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.” Finally, when all five had gotten through high school and college, and had started having their own families, I started thinking again about having a garden. However, I knew gardens cost money.

Then, one spring morning on Mother’s Day, as I was working in my kitchen, I heard cars drive by and looked out of the window to see a new tree planted in my yard. I couldn’t believe my eyes: it was a money tree! Dollar bills were stuck all over that tree, and there was a note which read: “I owe you eight hours of digging time. Love, Marvin.”

Marvin, my first son, kept his promise. He dug up a nice ten-by-fifteen-foot bed(花坛,花圃) for me. My other children bought me tools, a sunflower stepping stone(踏脚石) and gardening books. We built a garden together.

That was three years ago. My garden is now very pretty, and just what I’d always wanted. When I go out to weed or tend my flowers, I don’t seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels as if they were right there with me. When I think about what my children have done for me, I get tears in my eyes every time.

I’m still not sure whether money grows on trees. But I know love does!

【1】Why had the author(作者) never had a flower garden before?

A.Because she didn’t have enough time and money.

B.Because she had five children to take care of.

C.Because her children wanted expensive things.

D.Because her children were going to high school and college.

【2】Who helped the author build the garden at last?

    A.Her neighbor.

    B.Her first son.

    C.Her five children.

    D.Her husband.

【3】Why doesn’t she miss her children as much as she once did?

A.Because she has a big money tree.

B.Because she has a very pretty garden.

C.Because she is busy weeding or tending her flowers.

D.Because she feels the love of her children in the garden.

【4】The purpose of this passage is to tell us_________.

A.how to grow your own money tree

    B.the story of pretty garden

C.a story of the love between a mother and her children

D.the story of a money tree

In Times of Crists, We Need Classical Music

It’s still lying in front of me on my desk. The booklet, entitled Time for Outrange(愤怒) , was written by the 93-year-old French diplomat(外交官) Stephane Hessel. “The power of money,” Hessel says, filled with anger, “has never been as great and selfish and 1 as it is now.”

But what does the outrage of this Frenchman have to do with classical music and , ultimately, with me, music director of the Orchestre Symphenique de Montreal(蒙特利尔交响乐团) ?

A lot, I, too, am outraged by the direction of industrial society, with materialism and consumerism leading the way. I want to show that, because of its powerful impact, classical music can play a(n) 2 role right now.

We all sense that our society is experiencing an almost revolutionary 3. Life is getting faster, competition is fiercer and social cohesion(凝聚力) is reducing. Like most people, I have no idea how liberty and civil rights would develop in the era of globalization and ever-evolving technological advancement.

But I see this as an opportunity for a(n) 4 to classical music. The great symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are not museum pieces we should listen to only if we want to 5 ourselves with some music history. Now are they a decoration or a relaxation exercise for the quickened pace of life.

They are more than what a radio station for classical music once promised - “your oasis(绿洲) of well-being.” They are timeless compositions that 6 all the uncertainties and insecurities of this new period. They can support us in our search for meaning. Beethoven, for example, was convinced that man had the capacity to change for the better and to go throughout life. This is why there is so much hope in his music. His symphonies was mean to 7 people forward.

Classic music 8 our senses and emotions in such a way that we were thrown back onto ourselves. It 9 to listeners to make use of their own reason and reflect on their actions. Music’s sole purpose is to be experienced. That experience, in turn, is why music can change our perceptions(认知) of ourselves and thereby our interactions with others.

10 to explain this powerful impact of music will always remain unsatisfying, but this much is certain: aesthetic(审美的) experiences can transform people.
