26、 Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however.【1】Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully.
When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 【2】. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study. materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.【3】. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
【4】
When you get home from school, go over your notes. Preview the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day and read that material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about tests.
【5】. It helps you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your study. Y ou will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
A.Study regularly.
B.Listening carefully in class means less work later.
C.Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.
D.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to
E.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.
F.The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject.
G.If you want to make progress, you must finish your homework everyday.
27、In the 19th century, an Arab physician known as Zuhr Ibn conducted some animal research to assess the surgical procedures that could be applicable in humans. Since then, animal testing has been considered to be the most efficient way to develop new drugs. New medical treatments and drugs are tested in animals first to determine their effectiveness or safety levels before they are finally tested on humans. However, it remains controversial whether it is morally right or wrong to use animals for medical or commercial experiments.
Use of animals for medical purposes is seen to be necessary by many scientists. Researchers usually begin their trials using rats. If the tests are successful, further tests are done on monkeys before using human beings. For testing, such tiered(分层的) rounds are important because it reduces the level of error and any negative side effects. Some argue that animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments and there is no adequate alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system. Moreover, there are regulations for animal testing that limit the misuse of animals during research, which serves as evidence that animals are well taken care of and treated well instead of being intentionally harmed.
However, some other experts and animal welfare groups have opposed such practice, terming it as inhumane(不人道的) and claiming it should be banned. According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, radiation exposure, operations to deliberately cause damage and frightening situations to create depression and anxiety. They also hold the view that animals are very different from human beings and therefore make poor test subjects. Drugs that pass animal tests are not necessarily safe. Animal tests on the arthritis(关节炎) drug Vioxx showed that it would have a protective effect on the hearts of mice, yet the drug went on to cause more than 27,000 heart attacks before being pulled from the market.
It’s safe to say that using animals for tests will continue to be debated in many years to come. Despite the benefits of animal testing, some of the animal welfare organizations’ concerns need to be addressed with adequate regulations to ensure that animals are treated humanely.
【1】Why is animal testing considered necessary?
A.Because rats are more similar to humans than monkeys.
B.Because other testing alternatives may not replace the need for animals.
C.Because animal testing can spare humans any side effect.
D.Because animal testing has been in practice since the 19th century.
【2】What suffering do animals go through during experiments?
A.Eating poisonous food.
B.Being killed deliberately.
C.Breathing in polluted air.
D.Having unnecessary operations.
【3】What does the example Vioxx in paragraph 3 tell us?
A.Arthritis is hard to cure.
B.Some drugs need to be withdrawn from the market.
C.Animals can not necessarily produce accurate results.
D.A drug should be tested many more times before its release.
【4】What action will the author probably agree with?
A.Experts try hard to determine whether animal tests are harmful.
B.The authorities issue a new law to guarantee animal rights during research.
C.Scientists reduce the number of animals used in research.
D.Relevant organizations show more concern about the animals’ welfare.
28、 “Attention, everyone!” Miss Dalrymple looked at her class of ten-year-old. “Today we are going to create a special card for Father's Day, which falls on this weekend.” Then she busied herself handing out the paper and art materials to her noisy pupils.
They were a mixed punch. Some came from the rich side of the town, but the majorities were from parents who struggled to get jobs. So she had not been eager to carry out this activity.
“Think about all the things that your dad does that make him special,” she said loudly as she approached the last table. “You can write a poem or short story thinking of the positive characteristics that make your dad special. The written part of this activity should be completed before you start to decorate your card.”
Andrew looked at the blank page. He had never met, spoken to, or been hugged by his dad, so how could he write about him? Once when he was looking in his grandma's photo box, he had seen an old black and white photo but it was badly creased( 弄 皱 ) and difficult to recognize any clear features. She had quickly taken it from him and buried it deeply among the rest, never to be found again. After thinking for a while, he wrote:
Dear Dad,
You are a person I do not know and would probably not recognize as I only saw an old photo of you a long time ago. I think and wonder about you often, especially when I have no one to talk to about the Saturday fixtures( 体育 活 动 ). One day when I grow up I will do an Internet search to find you, but I am not sure whether I will be successful as several attempts by the Child Support Agency have not been successful. Happy Father's Day, Dad.
Love,
Andrew

29、 In the middle of winter, when snow is falling in many parts of the United States, scientists have sounded a warning to people who plan to spend many hours in the sun this summer. The warming is: The sun's summertime rays are more dangerous than once thought.
A team of scientists from 80 nations recently reported to the United Nations that a layer of ozone in the atmosphere, which protects humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation, will be thinner over the United States this summer. The thinner layer allows more ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach Earth. The extra amount of ultraviolet radiation could cause an increase in the number of cases of skin cancer.
Scientists first became concerned about the ozone layer in the mid-1980s when a hole was discovered in the layer above Antarctica during the winter. The hole was caused by chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. When these chemicals are sent out into the atmosphere, they produce gases that destroy the ozone.
Concern about the protective ozone layer rose more recently when data from satellites and ground stations showed that ozone levels were dropping over areas other than Antarctica. Low ozone levels were recorded in the spring and summer over the United States and over other populated areas in the world.
Although many countries have already begun stopping the use of ozone destroying chemicals, the new findings are expected to advance the timetable for a total ban of the chemicals.
【1】What do we know about the hole in the ozone layer?
A.It was first discovered in the 19th century.
B.It only appears in winters of a year.
C.It can protect human from ultraviolet rays.
D.It was caused by particular chemicals.
【2】Which can best describe scientists' attitude to the condition of ozone layer?
A.Worried.
B.Scared.
C.Favorable.
D.Surprised.
【3】Why do people become more concerned about ozone layer?
A.Because the weather became worse and worse.
B.Because they knew ozone levels were dropping.
C.Because air pollution caused more cancer cases.
D.Because ozone destroying chemicals were banned.
【4】We can infer that ________.
A.people may not get skin cancer in winters
B.it is unnecessary to totally ban the chemicals
C.many countries have realized the damage of the chemicals
D.the situation become less serious in the past few years

Craig watched his old sister, Riley, and her friend Liz race up and down the lake on their skates, avoiding other hockey(曲棍球) players. Their skate blades looked like silver smoke. When the game was over, the girls skated up to the bench where Craig was sitting. Craig asked Riley what skating felt like.
“When I go really fast, I feel like I am flying,” she said.
That is silly, thought Craig. Flying is something birds do in the air, not something people do on ice skates.
Then he watched Riley go back out on the ice. She skated around and around the edge of the lake with her arms pumping and her scarf trailing behind her. Soon she went so fast that her arms looked like wings and her scarf looked like a feathery tail. Maybe skating really was like flying.
When Riley sat down to take her skates off, Craig said, “I wish I could fly.”
Riley retied her skate laces and bent next to Craig. “Get on my back,” she said, and Craig did. Riley started skating, but Craig didn’t feel like he was flying. It just felt like a skating piggyback ride.
“You are too heavy,” Riley said, “I can’t go fast when I am carrying you.” She skated slowly back to the bench. Craig got off her back. “Even if you could go fast, I wouldn’t be flying.” he said sadly. “I need skates to fly.”
Riley didn’t say anything on the walk home, but a few days later she asked Craig if he wanted to go skating.
“To watch?” he asked. “No, to skate,” she said cheerfully. “Mom and I found a pair of my old skates. They might fit you.” The skates were a little big, but when Riley stuffed newspaper in the toes, they fit. Craig couldn’t stop smiling. He didn’t want to take them off, but he had to so he could walk to the lake. Riley and Liz went with him. They carried their hockey sticks and a wooden chair. Hardly had they got to the lake when Craig put his skates back on and Riley helped him onto the ice.
Paragraph 1:
Then she put his hands on the back of the chair.
