26、 For many, choosing the perfect summer holiday destination is no easy job. Here’s why Portugal could prove the perfect summer destination to suit everyone.
Delicious local cuisine(烹饪/菜肴)
Portuguese cuisine is up-and-coming on the world scene, with an abundance of dishes in every shape and flavor. Behind every Portuguese dish, there’s the recipe(烹饪方法) of a mother, of an aunt or an uncle, of a grandmother or a grandfather. The local cuisine is rooted deep in the hearts of the Portuguese people, which is one of the reasons why Portuguese food is so special. Whether it’s at the table of a top restaurant or a traditional inn, the food offers up the unforgettable taste of the Iberian Peninsula. We recommend you try the popular grilled sardines(沙丁鱼) that can be found all over the city’s, traditionally served with a side of boiled potatoes and vegetables or salad.
Take the sun back with you
The summer weather is a huge benefit to Portugal, with over 2, 500 hours of gorgeous sunshine each year. Stepping outdoors to see anything but the beautiful glow of the sun is something you needn’t battle with the indecisiveness of the climate in certain other European destinations.
Holiday-goers can bring back the sun-kissed yellowish-brown color by enjoying the beautiful Marinha beach in the beach capital, Algarve. There’s certainly no lack of inspiration to enjoy a drink in the sun!
Take a dive into a diamond blue joy
The Portugal is famous for its deep blue, and the summer not only offers up the opportunity to enjoy a range of sea-based activity like surfing, but it also allows you to explore the sea world beneath the waves.
Surrounded by cliffs and close to a small fishing village and harbor, Arrifana beach is a popular destination among surfers. Why not head out to the Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit on the 19-28th July? This is an International Wave Sports Festival noted for its national and international sports events like surfing, ski-boarding, wave skiing, and bodysurfing.

27、 Archaeologists(考古学家)have discovered at least 58 shipwrecks(沉船)filled with ancient objects near the islands of Fournoi in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. The discovery is believed to be the largest collection of shipwrecks ever found in the Mediterranean. They gathered there over a long time period, from time of ancient Greece to the 20th century. But most of the ships are from the time of the Greek, Roman and Byzantine civilizations.
Peter Campbell is leading the underwater research of the wrecks for the RPM Nautical Foundation, a group that studies ancient objects. He said, "The excitement is difficult to describe. I mean, it was just unbelievable. We knew that we had come across something that was going to change the history books. "
The international team began the underwater study in 2015. They found 22 shipwrecks that year. That number has climbed to 58 with the latest discovery. The team believes there are even more secrets lying on the seabed below.
Campbell called it "one of the top archaeological discoveries of the century". He told Reuters, "We now have a new story to tell of a trading road that connected the ancient Mediterranean. "
The wrecks and their contents show ships carrying goods from nearby areas like the Black Sea, Greece, Turkey, Armenia and Italy. Other goods come from places farther away such as Spain, Sicily, Cyprus, Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa.
The team has raised more than 300 ancient objects from the shipwrecks, including many tall jars(广口瓶)with two ears used by ancient Greek and Roman people to carry liquid.
Campbell said, "Those jars are used mainly for transporting liquids and semi-liquids in the past, so the goods it would be transporting were mostly wine, oil, fish sauces, perhaps honey." He added that fish sauce from the Black Sea area was rare and precious in ancient times.

28、 Technology offers conveniences such as opening the garage door from your car or changing the television station without touching the TV.
Now one American company is offering its employees a new convenience: a microchip implanted in their hands. Employees who have these chips can do all kinds of things just by waving their hands. Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Each chip costs $300 and Three Square Market will pay for the chip. Employees can volunteer to have the chips implanted in their hands. About 50 out of 80 employees have chosen to do so. The president of the company, his wife and their children are also getting chips implanted in their hands.
The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Implanting the chip only takes about a second and is said to hurt only very briefly. The chips go under the skin between the thumb and forefinger. With a chip in the hand, a person can enter the office building, buy food, sign into computers and more, simply by waving that hand near a scanner. The chips will be also used to identify employees. Employees who want convenience, but do not want to have a microchip implanted under their skin, can wear a wristband (腕带) or a ring with a chip instead. They can perform the same tasks with a wave of their hands as if they had an implanted chip.
Three Square Market is the first company in the United Slates to offer to implant chips in its employees. Epicenter, a company in Sweden, has been implanting chips in its employees for a while.
Three Square Market says the chip cannot track the employees. The company says scanners can read the chips only when they are within a few inches of them. “The chips protect against identity theft, similar to credit cards.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the chips back in 2004, so they should be safe for humans, according to the company.
In the future, people with the chips may be able to do more with them, even outside the office. Todd Westby is Chief Executive Officer of Three Square Market. He says, “Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.”

29、 Liana nervously bit her nails while she waited for the exam to arrive. She looked around the room; hundreds of other law students sat in rows staring anxiously at the tables in front of them. Just as she began to take a deep breath to calm her anxiety, an exam booklet(册子) was placed in front of her. This was the moment she had been expecting ever since she began law school three years ago. She picked up her pencil, and opened to the first page of the bar exam, a test for all students wanting to become licensed lawyers.
Liana never thought she would want to become a lawyer. Her parents were both artists. Law was something she had not been exposed to as a child. But art made for a tumultuous career—both of her parents had struggled to find jobs and worked round the clock when they were young. Even though they finally seemed successful and happy, Liana wanted something different.
She was the anchor on her high school debate team, and consistently impressed her competitors with her analytical thinking. “Never argue with Ms. Lakes,” her teachers would say. So she chose to major in law. In her mind, she pictured herself in a New York City courtroom(法庭) dressed in an expensive suit, with papers in her hand, waving at the jury(陪审团) in a speech on human rights.
But now, with the bar exam sitting in front of her, she started to worry. “What if I don’t pass? Did I study enough?” Her thoughts raced through her mind. On the first page were seven paragraphs detailing a law situation followed by a series of questions. Liana read through the paragraphs, and quickly scribbled down an explanation of the first question before moving onto the next question. The next few hours went like this as the clock ticked closer and closer to the lunch hour.
At 12:00 p.m. sharp, a buzzer(蜂鸣器) sounded and everyone was told to put down their pencils and walked out for an hour-long lunch break. At lunch, Liana met her friend, Kevin.
“How did it go?” she asked. “To be honest, I’ve no idea. I just kept writing.” Kevin said. Liana laughed and said she felt the same way.
After lunch, the two exchanged words of encouragement. They strolled back into the exam center a bit more refreshed. Liana finished the second half of the exam that day with a better feeling than what she started with in the morning.
