    The Rabbit Listened

Taylor’s amazing wood-block tower has been ruined by birds, and he’s not sure what to do with his feelings about that. The bear thinks he should get angry; the ostrich thinks he should ignore it; and the hyena thinks he should laugh it off. Then the rabbit comes over and listens to what Taylor thinks, and that helps him figure out what he wants to do next. Ages 3-5.

    Auntie Luce’s Talking Paintings

Coming to Haiti every December from America to spend time with her Aunt Luce, a little girl drinks in the sights and sounds of a town with excitement: “Buses painted with soccer stars.” Aunt Luce is an artist with portraits of Haiti’s heroes lining her studio walls, and every year the little girl asks, “Will you paint me this time, please?” Ages 4-8.

Those are all gone now and his mother is no longer with him, but Marwan hears her voice telling him to keep walking until he finds a new home. Ages 5-7.

    The Old Man

  • 28、Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana, to be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco. The houses were made of wood. These cottages once housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil; now they hold Twitter engineers.

The cottages could be an example of the industry’ s odd love affair with “low technology,” a concept associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship (手艺) that exists long before the Internet era. Low technology is not virtual (虚拟的) —so, to take advantage of it, Internet companies have had to get creative. The rescued wood cottages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds, are an obvious example, but Twitter’s designs lie on the extreme end. Other companies are using a broader interpretation (阐释) of low technology that focuses on nature.

Amazon is building three glass spheres filled with trees, so that employees can “work and socialize in a more natural, park-like setting.” At Google’s office, an entire floor is carpeted in glass. Facebook’s second Menlo Park campus will have a rooftop park with a walking trail.

Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech companies over the years. “We have lost the connection to the maker in our lives, and our tech engineers are the ones who feel impoverished (贫乏的) , because they’re surrounded by the digital world,” he says. “They’re looking for a way to regain their individual identity, and we’ve found that introducing real crafts is one way to do that.”

This craft based theory is rooted in history, William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after the Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement defined itself against machines. “Without creative human occupation, people became disconnected from life,” Morris said.

Research has shown that natural environments can restore(恢复) our mental capacities. In Japan, patients are encouraged to “forest-bathe,” taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure.

These health benefits apply to the workplace as well. Rachel Kaplvin, a professor of environmental psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environment. Her research found that workers with access to nature at the office—even simple views of trees and flowers—felt their jobs were less stressful and more satisfying. If low-tech offices can potentially nourish the brains and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages.

1The writer mentions the two nineteenth-century cottages to show that ________.

    A. Twitter is having a hard time

    B. old cottages are in need of protection

    C. early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana

    D. Internet companies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology

2Low technology is regarded as something that _______.

    A. is related to nature   B. is out of date today

    C. consumes too much energy   D. exists in the virtual world

3The main idea of Paragraph 5 is that human beings ________.

    A. have destroyed many pre-industrial arts

    B. have a tradition of valuing arts and crafts

    C. can become intelligent by learning history

    D. can regain their individual identity by using machines

4The writer’s attitude to “low technology” can best be described as ________.

    A. positive   B. defensive   C. cautious   D. doubtful

5What might be the best title for the passage?

    A. Past Glories, Future Dreams

    B. The Virtual World, the Real Challenge

    C. High-tech Companies, Low-tech Offices

    D. The More Craftsmanship, the Less Creativity

  • 29、   It is a question people have been asking for ages—is there a way to turn back the aging process?

For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not become old. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León searched for waters with magical powers in the early 1500s. But what he found instead is the American State of Florida.

Researchers in New York did not find a fountain of youth in fact, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus (丘脑下部).The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body, including growth, reproduction and the way we process food.

Researchers at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that hypothalamus stem cells also influence how fast aging takes place in the body. What are stem cells? They are simple cells that can develop into specialized cells, like blood or skin cells. Stem cells can also repair damaged parts in the body.

Professor Dongsheng Cai was the lead researcher in a study on aging in mice. Cai explains in the Journal Nature what they found. “Aging speed can be controlled by a particular place in the body, which is the hypothalamus. And it can be controlled by a particular type of cells, which are hypothalamus stem cells. I think these findings are quite interesting.”

He adds that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body. “So when hypothalamus function is decreasing, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, this protection against the aging development is lost. It finally leads to aging.”

Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) the hypothalamus in mice. They did this by putting stem cells from younger mice into middle-aged animals. Later, the researchers examined mice and tested for changes in behavior. They also looked for changes in the strength of the animals’ muscles and the way they worked. The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals.

Cai says when hypothalamus stem cells, which were derived from young mice was put into middle-aged mice, the mice aged slowly and they also have increased the length of their lives.

But these results were just from studying mice in a lab. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in human beings.

1Juan Ponce de León’s story was mentioned in order to show ________.

A.the efforts he made to discover Florida

B.the fruitless work to find the magical fountain

C.the non-stop search for the way to stay young

D.the impossible existence of “fountain of youth”

2The hypothalamus has control over activities EXCEPT________.

    A.growth B.reproduction

    C.aging process D.food production

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Stem cells are specialized cells which can repair damaged parts.

B.Aging is the result of function loss of hypothalamus stem cells.

C.The strength of the animals’ muscles slows the process of aging.

D.Aging speed is controlled by stem cells instead of hypothalamus.

4The underlined words “were derived from” probably means “________”.

    A.came from B.changed from

What is eco-fashion? Eco-fashion is about making clothes that considers the environment, the health of consumers and the working conditions of people in the fashion industry.

A closer look at the fashion industry points out many problems that are common practices in the creation of our fashions from the field to the factory. Firstly, the production of textiles pollutes the environment heavily. Cotton-planting uses pesticides; sheep-farming and wool-cleaning bring about global warming. Secondly, every stage of clothing production consumes a great deal of energy and some also involve chemicals which obviously do harm to the surroundings. In addition, there is a lot of waste produced in the process, especially in the form of polluted water. Thirdly, growing purchasing power and our shopping habits further worsen the bad effects. We are now buying clothes in increasing quantities and we are also quick to throw away clothes that have been worn only a couple of times.

Then, how to solve the problem? To a large degree, it is the fashion producers that really have the power and the responsibility to shape our future. There are a great many ways these producers can reduce their ecological footprint, from switching to green energy and reducing energy use, through selecting sustainable materials and choosing local suppliers, to recycling and minimizing waste. On the other hand, as consumers we can all play our part by selecting environmentally friendly clothing and reducing clothing buying.

There is some concern that eco-friendly fashions are just a trend that we will eventually grow tired of but we can make sure that doesn’t happen. Now many people are beginning to shop for organic food products because the benefits of eating food free of chemicals are immediate. They relate directly to our personal health. In fact, choosing eco-fashion can also do good to our personal health, though it is mostly done by way of keeping the health of the planet.

How to Deal with Pressures at School

As a high school student, if you are feeling stressed out or frustrated by teachers, classmates,or schoolwork,it is important to know that you aren't the only one. Believe it or not, everyone has these feelings at some point, and everyone should learn how to deal with them properly.

First of all, you need to keep a positive attitude and not take things to heart. That someone got a better grade than you doesn't mean that they are smarter—perhaps they studied longer or knew the material more. It's easy to become frustrated if you are not doing as well as your friends, but being optimistic will help you deal with future similar situations.

Secondly, if students at school are bullying you, know when to stand up for yourself. Don't let other classmates make you feel that you are not good enough. They are simply insecure and do not know how to deal with the pressures of school. They are just trying to make others feel bad, so they can feel better about themselves.

Lastly, it is necessary to keep things correctly. For any situation that is stressful, take a second look from a different point of view. When I look back to the frustrations of my high school days, I notice that many of them seem very unimportant to me now.

It's not easy to be confident when there are so many students who seem like they "have it all",but try to realize that you, too, are good enough. It’s not a competition about who is smarter, more beautiful—everyone is different—so believe your individuality.
