二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The world has a fast growing population and people need more land for houses, factories, highways, and so on. The farmland is decreasing with each passing day. How to meet the need of feeding the growing population? One way is to introduce some high-output gene into a crop to enable it to produce more. Biologists over the years have discovered genes which can raise output of the crops, resist pests, improve taste, etc.

However, in many western countries there is widespread concern over the safety of“Genetically Modified”(GM) (转基因) foods, because they think there may be serious problems of environment, health, safety, morality and so on.

As a scientist I must admit GM foods involve great risks to humans. In fact in Europe they’re called “Frankenstein foods” by many. Frankenstein is a character in a novel. He was a very clever scientist. He created a monster(怪物), which eventually killed him.

Soybeans can be made into many foods. However, it’s hard to trace them. Therefore, it’s very important we have to make sure the soybean, if genetically modified, is free from any poisonous matter harmful to human beings. For this we need very good testing. We do have some testing on some animals, but no completely satisfactory testing has ever been made so far. They’re entirely new, and their problems are entirely unknown. It takes time to develop persuasive tests to know whether they’re harmful to us or not.

We may not be able to tell what may happen if we take GM foods. Some of them may be resistant to antibiotics (抗生素). Then many of the medicines we have today will have no effect on people eating GM foods.

A more likely case is the GM foods may contain genes some people are allergic to.

GM products have already come into our lives but most people even know nothing about it.

At least we have to be clear about what we are eating. The China Consumers Association is calling for labeling (标注) on GM foods so that consumers will know before they buy them.

【1】The chief purpose of developing GM foods is to_______.

    A. feed the fast growing population

    B. make the foods much cheaper

    C. make the foods much tastier

    D. kill pests on the crops

【2】From the passage we can infer that _____.

    A. many Europeans reject GM foods

    B. GM foods are very popular in Europe

    C. Frankenstein foods can make people clever

    D. Frankenstein was a scientist creating GM foods

【3】The underlined phrase “trace them” in Paragraph 4 probably means“ ”.

    A. find their market   B. raise their quality

    C. find their origins D. enjoy their taste

【4】Which of the following is TRUE about GM foods?

    A. The testing shows GM soybean foods are free from poisonous matter.

    B. Sometimes consumers can hardly tell GM soybeans from natural ones.

    C. GM foods prove to be safe to humans after some testing on animals.

    D. GM foods problems have been known after testing on animals.

【5】What can we learn from the passage?

    A. GM foods make antibiotics fail to function properly.

    B. People eating GM foods will suffer from food allergies.

    C. As GM foods are safe at present, they’re certainly safe later on.

    D. People should be informed of which foods are GM foods.

  • 22、The next time San Francisco residents stop a taxi, they may step into a car with no one behind the wheel. Driverless taxis are now allowed to come on the city’s streets. On June 2, 2022, Cruise, a division of General Motors (GM), was approved to charge for rides in its self-driving cars, becoming the first company allowed to operate commercial driverless cars in a major US city.

Though Cruise is regarding it as a big win, its self-driving cars aren’t totally free to run on the streets of San Francisco as they please. Cruise vehicles will be limited to transporting passengers in less crowded areas of the city between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The speed limit is 30 mph. They are also not allowed to operate in heavy rain or fog. The rules are meant to reduce any injuries or accidents.

Cruise plans to launch the service gradually with a team of just 30 cars. The first robotaxis will be improved versions of GM’s Chevrolet Bolt. However, the company is seeking approval to get its custom-built Cruise Origin on public roads. The driverless electric vehicle has no wheels or pedals(踏板) and can attain highway speeds. The car consists mostly of a siting space, where passengers can face each other.

Cruise’s ability to obtain the commercial permit to operate is a big step forward. However, the company still has to convince passengers that its technology is safe. Many remain concerned about safety. A 2021 survey by the American Automobile Association found that 74 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle.

It remains to be seen how the new driverless taxi experiment will play out in San Francisco. But based on the vast number of companies that are racing to develop self-driving vehicles and the tens of thousands of people on waitlists for robotaxi rides, the Cruise pioneering program is at least set for popularity, if not success.

【1】What can we learn about the Cruise’s driverless ride services?

A.The services have turned out to be a great success.

B.The services receive great support from the public.

C.The services have run in some major cities of the USA.

D.The services are limited to some regions of San Francisco.

【2】What does the author describe in detail in paragraph 3?

    A.The feature of Cruise Origin.

    B.The future of self-driving cars.

C.The original plan of the company.

D.The new version of Chevrolet Bolt.

【3】What is the attitude of most Americans towards the self-driving taxis?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Opposed.

    C.Favourable.

    D.Unconcerned.

【4】What can be the best title of the text?

A.Cruise Offers Free Self-driving Ride Services

B.Self-driving Cars Are Coming to San Francisco

C.Self-driving Vehicles Are Popular in Major Cities

D.Companies Begin to Charge for Rides in Self-driving Cars

  • 23、If Christmas is our nation’s biggest official holiday, certainly Super Bowl Sunday is our biggest unofficial holiday. It’s also a time for friends and family to gather for food, chatter and arguments while watching football games. Meir Kalmanson thought the homeless people, too, should get to celebrate the big day. So, on a cold February Sunday in 2017, as he headed to a Super Bowl party at a New York City club a friend owned, he invited six homeless men he met on the streets to join him.

Over burgers and wine, Kalmanson and his homeless guests watched the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons. He described the scene as “warm, exciting energy”. But the game played just a small role in the night’s success. More important was the men’s interaction with others. “If you walked in, you couldn’t tell who was homeless and who wasn’t,” says Kalmanson, “As a result, the men felt that they were part of something. They had their dignity restored.”

Then, the following year, when friends and YouTube fans asked about the next party, he knew that the event had already taken on a life of its own. And so began the charitable organization Super Soul Parties. Kalmanson worked with volunteers and homeless shelters in cities to organize the gatherings and transport guests on game day. Last year, more than 2,000 homeless people in 36 cities watched the Los Angeles Rams compete with the Cincinnati Bengals. Kalmanson’s next goal is to spread the celebrations to every state.

【1】What inspired Kalmanson to invite the homeless to join in the party?

A.The arrival of Super Bowl Sunday.

    B.The invitation from YouTube fans.

C.The thought of getting them involved.

D.The request from the six homeless men.

【2】What do the underlined words “had already taken on a life of its own” mean in paragraph 3?

A.The event showed its own power.

B.The event reflected its own life.

C.The event itself went on a wrong way.

    D.The event surprised many people.

【3】Which of the following best describes Kalmanson?

    A.Wealthy and grateful.

    B.Careful and determined.

    C.Humorous and helpful.

    D.Sympathetic and ambitious.

    【4】What’s the text mainly about?

A.How Super Bowl Sunday comes into being.

B.How Kalmanson organizes Super Bowl Sunday.

C.How the homeless celebrate Super Bowl Sunday.

D.How Kalmanson helps the homeless on Super Bowl Sunday.

  • 24、Climate change will significantly alter how sound travels underwater, potentially affecting natural soundscapes (音响范围) as well as increasing human-generated noise, according to a new global study that identified future ocean “sound hotspots.” These changes to ocean soundscapes could impact essential activities of marine life.

“We calculated the effects of temperature, depth and salinity (盐度) based on public data to model the soundscape of the future,” said Alice Affatati, lead author of the new study published today in Earth’s Future. It is the first global-scale estimate of ocean sound speed linked to future climate. In warmer water, sound waves travel faster and last longer before dying away.

Two hotspots, in the Greenland Sea and a patch of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean east of Newfoundland, can expect the most change at 50 and 500 meter depths. The major impact is expected in the Arctic, where we know already there is expansion of the effects of climate change now. Not all the Arctic, but one specific part where all factors play together to give a signal that overcomes the uncertainty of the model itself.

Many marine animals use sound to communicate with each other and navigate their under-water world. Changing the sound speed can impact their ability to feed, fight, find mates, avoid predators and migrate, the authors said. Temperature, pressure with increasing depth and salinity all affect how tast and how far sound travels in water.

Future work will combine the global soundscape with other maps of human impacts in the oceans to accurately determine areas of combined stressors (压力源), or direct needed observational research. With complicated problems like climate change, to combine different approaches is the way to go.

【1】What does the new study indicate?

A.Human-generated noise will impact climate change.

B.Activities of marine life could impact ocean soundscapes.

C.Natural soundscapes may potentially affect climate change.

D.Climate change may affect the way sounds travel under oceans.

【2】The global-scale estimate of ocean sound speed linked to future climate is________.

    A.useless

    B.initial

    C.simple

    D.outdated

【3】In which aspect does climate change affect marine life?

    A.Their food variety.

    B.Their eyesight.

    C.Their survival ability.

    D.Their dashing ability.

【4】What is the next aim of the study?

    A.To try different approaches.

    B.To combine global soundscapes.

    C.To analyse other human impacts.

D.To locate the places of stress source.
