  • 21、A survey said the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children.I was shocked. I mean, a whole minute? Every day? Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid—related things. In fact, I am one of them.

Child—rearing (养育) doesn’t come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of capers and a bay leaf. Then he’ d buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees.My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.

The truth is, mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting phrase such as “Mummy kiss it better,” and cured l7 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.

Yes, mothers are incredible people, but they are not always right. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.

The mother of Bill Gates: If you’ re going to drop out of college and hang out with your nerdy friends, don’ t come running to me when you find yourself penniless.” The mother of Albert Einstein: “When you grow up, you’ ll find that sitting around thinking about the nature of time and space won’ t pay the grocery bills.” The mother of George W.Bush: “You’ll never be like your dad, who became President of the United States and started his own war.”

    B. males are not good at child—rearing

  • 23、Since the discovery of Otzi the Iceman in a European glacier in 1991, scientists have recovered a wealth of information from his 5, 300-year-old body. The brown-eyed, gap-toothed, tattooed (有刺青的) man, most likely spent 40 years farming and herding, and was probably suffering from a painful stomachache at the time when he died.

After 25 years of broad scientific research and media reports, the Iceman has certainly secured his place as “Europe’s Oldest Celebrity”. The Iceman was discovered back in 1991 with various clothing, including a coat, skin leggings (绑腿), a fur hat, and hay shoes. Due to the decomposition (分解) of the leather and fur over thousands of years, however, researchers have been unable to finally confirm specific animal species for some of the elements of Otzi’s clothes.

Understanding the choice of animals used in ancient clothing production-domestic or wild, local or imported-provides a unique chance to learn about the human past. Did the clothing reflect the social status of the wearer? Were animal skins selected just due to their availability, or were certain types of leathers and furs valuable for specific qualities?

Researchers were able to get ancient DNA markers in nine samples of leather and fur from different articles of the Iceman’s clothing. According to their study published in Scientific Reports, Otzi’s clothing choices were selective, practical and sensible. They confirmed that Otzi’s coat was from sheepskin, an identification already made in previous studies. However, the genetic analysis revealed that the sheep species sampled is closer to modern domestic European sheep than to their wild cousins, and the articles were made from the skins of at least four animals.

The analysis showed that part of Otzi’s coat was also made from a species of domestic goat that still lives in the hills and valleys of central Europe today. On the other hand, Otzi’s leggings were also from domestic goat leather, and not a species of wolf, fox, or dog as previous thought.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To explain the cause of Otzi’s death.

B.To state how significant Otzi the Iceman is.

C.To describe the appearance of Otzi the Iceman.

D.To make a brief introduction to Otzi the Iceman.

【2】Why did the researchers study the clothing of Otzi the Iceman?

A.To acquire plenty of information about the human past.

B.To draw inspiration for today’s clothing design.

C.To learn about how the clothing was made.

D.To clarify the wild animals in Otzi’s time.

【3】What were Otzi’s leggings made from?

    A.Imported dog skin.

    B.Domestic goat skin.

    C.A sort of wolf skin.

D.The skin of a fox species.

【4】What is a new finding of the scientific research?

A.Otzi’s coat was made from sheepskin.

B.The clothing reflected the social status of the wearer.

C.The sheep species sampled is closer to their wild cousins.

D.The sheep species sampled is similar to modern domestic European sheep.

  • 24、   At 88, I remain a competitive runner. The finish line of my life is drawing close, and I hope to reach it having given the best of myself along the way. I’ve been training my body to meet the demands of this final stretch. But, I wonder, should I have asked more of my mind?

If I didn’t exercise, I would release the hungry beasts that seek their elderly prey on couches, but not in the gym. The more I sweated, the more likely it was my doctor would continue to say, “Keep doing what you’re doing, and I’ll see you next year.” My mind, on the other hand, seems less willing to give in to discipline. I have tried internet “brain games”, solving algebraic problems flashing past and changing the route of virtual trains to avoid crashes. But these never approach my determination to remain physically fit as I move deeper into old age.

Despite having many friends in their 70s, 80s and 90s, I’ve been far too slow to realize that how we respond to aging is a choice made in the mind, not in the gym. Some of my healthiest friends carry themselves as victims abused by time. Other friends, many whose aching knees and hips are the least of their physical problems, find comfort in their ability to accept old age as just another stage of life to deal with. I would use the word “heroic” to describe the way they cope with aging.

One such friend recently called from a hospital to tell me a sudden brain disease had made him legally blind. He interrupted me as I began telling him how terribly sorry I was, “Bob, it could have been worse. I could have become deaf instead of blind.”

Despite all the time I spend lifting weights and exercising, I realized I lack the strength to have said those words. It suddenly struck me I’ve paid a price for being a “gym rat.” If there is one characteristic common to friends who are aging with a graceful acceptance of life’s attacks, it is contentment. Aging had to be more than what I saw in a mirror.

But rather than undertaking a fundamental change in the way I face aging, I felt the place to begin would be to start small. A recent lunch provided a perfect example.

I’ve always found it extremely difficult to concentrate when I’m in a noisy setting. At this lunch with a friend in an outdoor restaurant, a landscaper began blowing leaves from underneath the bushes surrounding our table. Typically, after such a noisy interruption, I would have snapped, “Let’s wait until he’s finished!” then fallen silent. When the roar eventually faded, my roar would have drained (消耗) the conversation of any warmth. It troubled me that even a passing distraction could so easily take me from enjoying lunch with a good friend to a place that gave me no pleasure at all. I wanted this meal to be different.

My years in gyms had taught me to shake off pains and other distractions, never permitting them to stop my workout or run. I decided to treat the noise this way. I continued talking with my friend, challenging myself to hear the noise, but to hold it at a distance. The discipline so familiar to me in the gym - this time applied to my mind - proved equally effective in the restaurant. It was as though I had taken my brain to a mental fitness center.

Learning to ignore a leaf blower’s roar hardly equips me to find contentment during my passage into ever-deeper old age. But I left the lunch feeling I had at least taken a small first step in changing behavior that stood in the way of that contentment.

Could I employ that same discipline to accept with dignity the inevitable decline awaiting me like the finish line? Hoping that contentment will guide me as I make my way along the path yet to be traveled.
