24、As someone who’s been studying English for many years now, you might think you know the English language pretty well. But if you overheard a British person say, “A Billy left some bees and honey in my sherbet (冰冻果露) last night,” would you understand what they meant?
Probably not, but many native speakers may not know what this person was saying either.
The example above was a sentence that a London taxi driver might say to another member of his or her tribe. In plain English, the sentence would be, “A customer left some money in my cab last night.”
So, what exactly is meant by “tribe”?
A recent article on the BBC Culture website pointed out that nearly all of us are a part of a tribe.
This is a group that defines (定义) who we are and even how we speak. And with each tribe comes its own “secret language”, as the BBC called it.
If you work in a certain industry – education, for example – you may use slang words (俚语) and acronyms (首字母缩略词) that only other people who work in that industry would understand. Or if you live in a certain city, you might use a slang word to describe a landmark (地标) in the city, that only locals would understand.
These secret words don’t always stay within their tribes, however. Words from many tribes, especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hop, often enter people’s everyday vocabulary. For example, the phrase “to have beef” – meaning “to be in a conflict(冲突,争执)” – was made by US rappers. Today, it’s widely used by native English speakers all over the world.
As BBC reporter Susie Dent wrote, “We hear amazing secret languages every day, full of history and stories and in-jokes. And one thing is certain: our tribal conversations will never be finished.”
【1】The example at the beginning of the text is mainly used to ________.
A.prove(证明) that English is hard to learn
B.explain the meaning of tribes
C.teach readers how to communicate with London taxi drivers
D.show how the languages of tribes are often difficult for outsiders (局外人) to understand
【2】What can we know about secret languages?
A.They mostly came from musical cultures.
B.Some words from them are popular in everyday conversation.
C.They first started in London in the 1980s.
D.They have failed to become popular among young people.
【3】What is Dent’s attitude(态度)toward the future of secret languages?
A.Confident.
B.Worried.
C.Uninterested.
D.Objective (客观的).
25、Do you like running enough to make it a habit? Tierney Wolfgram does; she has made running a lifelong career and isn’t stopping.
In February, the 16-year-old from Woodbury High School, Minnesota, US, competed at the 2020 US Olympic Trials.
She finished the marathon with a time of 2:42:47 as the youngest competitor in the race and ranked 76th out of 390 runners.
However, the cross-country season was put off to winter because of COVID-19. So she caught the chance to train for another race – the Parkway Marathon in California.
In November, Wolfgram, who turned 17, broke the Women’s American Junior marathon record with her time of 2:31:49. The old record was 2:34:32, which had stood since 1984.
“ I’m totally stunned,” said Wolfgram’s assistant coach. “ I knew she was going to break it, but she really showed out!”
This was only her third marathon. In 2018, when Wolfgram was 15 years old, she ran her first marathon just because she wanted to see if she was able to do it. “ I believed that I would get faster as the distances got longer ... I’m still glad that I did it.”
When preparing for that first marathon, she ran up to 120 miles per week. Although her parents didn’t have any background in running, they helped Wolfgram train. At first, her dad would take her out in the morning and run about 13 miles. The distance would gradually increase each day. On top of her runs in the morning, she would do cross-country practice after school.
Wolfgram and her team now prepare for the indoor track and cross-country race this winter. As for the marathon, Wolfgram will consider attending the Olympics Games in 2024 after it’s scheduled.

Having this anger in his heart, he may be triggered(引发)by small things such as being made joke on, then conduct(进行)campus bullying.
Society is a big world. Where there are people, there are societies. Within this society, the community is what teenagers get in touch with most.
