二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to.You are still in a wonderful mood?Impossible!

Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.

Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad.No wonder they can hardly win others' pity or respect.

When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首)of a negative person is put in you,you feel the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down.

Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a coworker,or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible.Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they won't feel ashamed of themselves about that.

Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to(附着)you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness.Life is too short to feel negative.Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.

    A. By influencing our emotion.

    B. By telling us the nature of life.

    C. By changing our way of thinking.

3Some negative people base their happiness on________.

    A. other people's pity for them

    B. making other people unhappy

    C. building up a positive attitude

    D. other people's respect for them

4According to the passage,to reduce negative people's influence on us,we are advised______.

    A. to change negative people's attitude to life

    B. to show our dissatisfaction to negative people

    C. to make negative people feel ashamed of themselves

    D. to communicate with negative people as little as possible

  • 27、Duncan Jurman has been fascinated by butterflies since he was 4 years old. Early on, he learned that butterfly populations were becoming smaller globally due to human activities so he developed gardens at his home, where he raised more than 5,000 butterflies to be released.

In 2018, Jurman developed a large butterfly garden at his high school, which has since attracted 28 species of butterflies, including two endangered species. The garden has also attracted other wildlife, including birds, lizards, and insects.

Jurman is devoted to protecting butterflies by reviving natural habitats. He travels to high schools to share his knowledge and encourage others to help in his quest. He’s now working with gardeners and local residents to rescue endangered butterfly species and create better habitats in general for wildlife.

“From teaching, I recognized that most students don’t know the important roles butterflies play in our nature—as pollinators of plants and key food sources for numerous animals, such as birds and lizards,” Jurman said. “Most don’t know that butterfly populations worldwide are in serious danger. Though equipped with advanced technology as a whole today, most students don’t know gardening, insects and nature in general compared with previous generations."

“I want to change this situation and realize there’s an opportunity to raise youth’s awareness of the importance of butterflies, the many threats facing them, and the relatively little effort necessary to have an immediate effect on the future of butterflies," he added.

    【1】Why did Jurman develop gardens?

A.Because he was fascinated by butterflies.

B.Because he was in love with unique butterflies.

C.Because there were different species of butterflies.

D.Because the populations of butterflies were dropping.

【2】What can butterflies do in nature?

    A.Serve as animals’ food.

    B.Recognize serious natural dangers.

    C.Advance agricultural technology.

    D.Appeal to birds and lizards.

【3】What’s Jurman’s attitude toward raising teenagers’ awareness of protecting butterflies?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Positive.

    C.Unknown

    D.Disappointed.

  • 28、Diet Myths — Get the facts, or your diet may fail!

Dieting is hard work, and there are plenty of “helpful” diet tricks that can make weight loss even harder. 1

Carbs(含碳水化合物的食物) are bad for you. Carbohydrates are actually an important source of energy. There are good carbs and bad carbs. Some foods, like white bread or white rice, are example of bad carbs. Good carbs include whole wheat bread and brown rice. They’re rich in fiber and really good for you!

2 On the contrary, studies show that people who eat breakfast will eat fewer calories throughout the day. And if you know you’re going to be eating a big meal later, don’t starve yourself in order to save you calories. You’ll just eat more during the meal because you’re so hungry! Instead, eat smaller meals a couple days before and after, and exercise more.

You can control where your body loses weight. Bad news—if you want a flatter stomach, just exercising your stomach won’t work. 3 Cardio(有氧运动) exercises will help burn fat, while weight training helps build muscles. Your “trouble areas” might not be the first to slim down, but keep exercising!

Your weight depends on your genes. 4 While a “fat gene” does exist, its influence on your size is small. Smart eating and exercise have a much greater effect than your genes. Only 25 percent of your weight is controlled by genes – the rest is up to you.

Say “no” to junk food. Many people think that the key to losing weight is cutting out all bad foods. 5 To lose weight and keep it off, eat great 80 percent of the time, but allow yourself in a treat or two the other 20 percent.

    A. You can’t target where you lose weight.

    B. But the more strict your diet is, the more likely you are to break it — and in a big way.

    C. Here are some common myths about losing weight and the truth behind them.

    D. Skipping meals helps you lose more weight.

    E. If you and your family have problems with obesity, you’re not sure to be fat.

    F. Don’t miss meals but exercise.

    G. Instead of choosing a difficult diet, find one you can manage and stick to it every day.

  • 29、Scientists are studying whether a drug known as talazoparib could offer a new treatment to people with secondary breast cancer(SBC)that has spread to the brain, where it becomes incurable.

The new experiment, supported by the charity Breast Cancer Now, will see researchers study whether talazoparib could help those with secondary breast cancer by preventing cancer cells from restituting, forcing them to die.

“Our previous research has shown that, in many cases, secondary breast cancer tumors(肿瘤)in the brain have changes in the way they repair their DNA. So next we will experiment to see whether the tumors can be easily hurt by drugs like talazoparib,” said Professor Leonie Young. Experts will use tumors and breast cancer cells donated by patients to see whether talazoparib is effective in treating secondary breast cancer in the brain. Further tests will examine the drug in mice, as well as models that imitate the brain’s protective system.

Natalie Woodford who was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer welcomed the launch of the research. “It’s really encouraging to learn about the new secondary breast cancer research happening,” she said. “I hope that this study will be a success and lead to new treatments for women like me in the future.”

Dr Simon Vincent, director of the research, added, “About 35,000 people in the UK are living with incurable secondary breast cancer as well as the fear and uncertainty around, because this deadly disease will cut their lives short. We are eager to prove the effectiveness of the new drug to treat this incurable disease, especially those whose breast cancer has spread to the brain and who have very limited treatment options.”

【1】What does the underlined word “restituting” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Repairing.

    B.Reducing.

    C.Revising.

    D.Replacing.

【2】What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

A.Why the experiment will be successful.

B.How important the previous research is.

C.How experts will carry out the experiment.

D.What benefits the experiment will bring about.

【3】What may be Dr Simon Vincent’s attitude to the new drug?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Uncertain.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Uninterested.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

A.The drug has already proved effective.

B.Experiments can only be carried out on mice.

C.All cancers can be cured except SBC in the UK.

D.The drug could bring hope to people suffering from SBC.
