二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Why do we like somebody else? One factor(因素) may be intelligence. It could be assumed that people generally like other people better if they’re smarter, as they might be more interesting to talk to. 【1】 If someone is too smart, somebody with lower intelligence may not like them as they might feel that they look worse in comparison. In contrast, a really smart person might feel that somebody with lower intelligence is less likable.

【2】 In the study, researcher Maria Flakus and her team analyzed data gathered from Polish high school students. The results of the study indicated that being intelligent influenced both being liked and liking others. Interestingly, it did so in opposite ways. 【3】 However, they tended to like fewer people than less intelligent students. Specifically, smart students had a tendency to only like others that were as smart as themselves.

Importantly, the effect of liking others due to their intelligence was strongest during the first test and became weaker over time. Thus, over time, the importance of intelligence in building social relationships decreases. 【4】 The researchers suggest that over time, knowing about the shared interests of others may be a more important factor in liking than knowing they’re smart.

In contrast, the effect of smart students only liking others that were equally intelligent remained significant over the course of the year, although it became a bit weaker. The researchers warn that this may lead to intelligent students being seen as isolated(孤立的) by others. This may become problematic if the smart students are viewed as too proud. 【5】

A.Instead, other factors become more important.

B.Smart people in the study tended to like nobody.

C.Intelligent students were liked better by their classmates.

D.The relationship between intelligence and being liked is complex.

E.A recent study looked into the link between intelligence and being liked,

F.But this association may also be a function of the intelligence of both people.

G.Thus, smart people may wish to be careful to take care of their social relationships.

  • 22、A new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful  Antarctic voyage back to life.

Frank Hurley's  pictures would  be outstanding—undoubtedly firstrate photojournalism—if they had been made last week.In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海难), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship.

The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegianbuilt threemaster that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all,to the southernmost shore of Antarctica's Weddell Sea.From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled (雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done.Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.

As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and wellresearched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort.Scott's last journey, completed as he lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world's imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds.Shackleton, a onetime British merchantnavy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography.Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.

1What do we know about the photos taken by Hurley?

    A. They were made last week.

    B. They showed undersea sceneries.

    C. They were found by a cameraman.

    D. They recorded a disastrous adventure.

2Who reached the South Pole first according to the text?

    A. Frank Hurley.

    B. Ernest Shackleton.

    C. Robert Falcon Scott.

    D. Caroline Alexander.

3What does Alexander think was the purpose of the 1914 voyage?

    A. Artistic creation.   B. Scientific research.

    C. Money making.   D. Treasure hunting.

  • 23、Mercy Baggs is reflecting on her future. “Should I live to 95, I would do another parachute jump, ”she says. She first jumped when she was 77 in honor of her achievements as mayor of the Wiltshire town of Calne. Then she jumped again last March, a day before her 90th birthday, to raise funds for Wiltshire air ambulance.

“This is the thrill of it, ”she says. “You go up, and then that door opens and the wind starts to come through. You free-fall for a long time. ”She has always enjoyed risks since she was a child, when people used to look down on her. But nobody does now.

As a child, she lived in poverty and also went through ups and downs, “I am very sensitive to people who are more unfortunate, ”Baggs says. As a young adult, she joined the British Transport Commission police, but dealing with children who couldn’t find their parents was too much to bear. “I knew what they were going through. I like kids. I really do. ”Later she left the police and worked in Wiltshire council. But no doubt her childhood fed into her actions as a councillor, and later mayor in Calne, where she helped to set up a drop-in centre for young people. The drop-in was one of the causes she raised money for with that first leap out of the plane.

But why a parachute jump? At the time, her late husband, John, was ill with bowel cancer. He said, “I do wish you wouldn’t do it. ”She said, “John, it’s life. I’ve got to do something. ”

Baggs has never been fazed by ageing. She says that she wanted to show that you don’t have to sit on your backside knitting or watching television all the time. There’s a world out there. There’s a life out there. She hopes for at least one more skydive, maybe a go on a 100mph zip wire and “a peaceful end” .

【1】Why did Mercy Baggs make her first parachute jump?

    A.To celebrate her 90h birthday.

B.To make others look up to her.

C.To raise funds for an air ambulance.

D.To mark her term of office as mayor.

【2】What impact did her childhood experiences make on her career?

A.She did parachute jumps as a part-time job.

B.She showed great concern for unlucky children.

C.She found it very tough to work with young people.

D.She left the drop-in centre and prepared a run for mayor.

【3】What does the underlined word“fazed”mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Disturbed.

    B.Abandoned.

    C.Witnessed.

    D.Embarrassed.

【4】What does Baggs intend to convey with one more jump?

A.It is never too old to learn.

    B.Enjoy life with her family.

C.Failure is the mother of success.

D.Be brave to face challenges in life.

  • 24、Cornwall Council apologised to the public after a citizen complained that one of its buildings was lit up “like a Christmas tree” at midnight during an energy crisis.

On Saturday, a dog walker, Stuart, discovered a brightly-lighted Chy Trevail building in Bodmin, which accommodates more than 600 staff. The witness said, “How can the council explain for leaving all the lights and TVs on? We’re constantly told there is an energy crisis. They put our council tax up. For what reason? Because they employed staff that forget how to use a light switch?”

There were complaints about a similar issue last summer when Lys Kernow, formerly the New County Hall in Truro was pictured with all the lights on past midnight both inside and outside.

A council spokesman admitted it was an error. “Following an investigation, we can confirm some lights at Chy Trevail were left switched on accidentally,” he said, “Training will be given to the workers who made the mistake to ensure this is not to happen again. Cornwall Council is committed to reducing its energy use and has taken many steps to do so, including the installation (安装) of solar panels at both County Hall in Truro and at Chy Trevail. A new lighting control system has also been installed in Truro to ensure the amount of time lights are left switched on is minimised.“

Chy Trevail includes a central hall for the main reception and public facilities, as well as open- plan flexible workspaces over three floors. The building has “a special design driven by a challenging display energy certificate rating and includes 200kw photovoltaics (太阳能光伏) to generate on-site renewable energy, low energy LED lighting, improved insulation, air-tightness and measures to reduce water consumption.

Cornwall Council previously declared a climate emergency and hopes to be carbon neutral by 2030.The local authority has invested in LED lighting at Lys Kernow and uses renewably-sourced energy to power the building, including solar energy from panels installed on the roof.

【1】What did Stuart see on Saturday night?

    A.Over 600 staff working overtime.

    B.A Christmas tree being decorated.

C.Bright lights burning in a council building.
