二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CAR RENTAL IN CANADA

When you fly into Canada you don’t have many choices. A car is often the only way to reach the spectacular destinations which Canada is famous for. Most major car rental companies have offices at airports, towns and cities across the country.

What do you need in order to rent a car in Canada?

    ● Valid Driver’s license and International Driver’s Permit if your license is not in English or French.

    ● When picking up your car, you may have to show your passport and a return airline ticket.

    ● Credit Card for the deposit—Renting a car in Canada without a credit card is impossible.

    Fly-Drive Packages from Home

You may get the best deal on car rental if you book a fly-drive package from home or if you book a long time in advance. Rental coast varies to a great extent, depending on the time of year, type of vehicle and length of rental.

    Minimum Age

The driver has to be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of 12 months of driving experience in order to rent a car in Canada. A “Young Renter Fee” will be applied to your car rental, if you are between the ages of 21 and 24 and will be charged on top of the rental rate.

    Insurance

Most car rental companies in Canada offer a collision damage waiver (CDW) for an additional charge. Some credit card companies include CDW insurance on car rentals when you use their cards to pay for the rental. Check your credit card’s terms and conditions.

    Fuel and Service Stations

Most rental cars use unleaded gas. Remember, driving distances in Canada are long and a large amount of your vacation budget will go towards gasoline. Filling up in larger cities is usually cheaper than in small towns. If you are heading up to the Northwest Territories, gas prices will be much higher than in the south.

    Cross-Border Travel

Some rental companies don’t allow their cars to drive across borders, like from Canada to the US or across provinces. If this is the case, watch out; GPS may be used to track your route.

1You’ll have to pay extra fees for your car rental in Canada if you________.

    A. book a fly-drive package from home

    B. are 22 with one-year driving experience

    C. use a credit card offering CDW insurance

    D. have no passport or return airline ticket

2What are you encouraged to do when you rent a car in Canada?

    A. Use GPS to find your way. B. Provide a license in English.

    C. Fill up the car in large cities. D. Drive across borders to America.

  • 22、You may have never seen a dodo bird in your lifetime. Driven to extinction on the island of Mauritius in 1692, the species has become a thing of the past. But it could soon be brought back to life.

A company called Colossal Biosciences, which has offices in Austin, plans to “de-extinct” the species alongside some other well-known extinct species, the woolly mammoth (长毛象) and Tasmanian tiger. According to the company, all three will be de-extinct within the next decade.

The dodo bird was a giant flightless pigeon (鸽子) on the island of Mauritius. The island, off the east coast of Africa, was visited by sailors in the early 1600’s. When the sailors arrived there, they would walk around the island and knock the heads of the dodos because there was nothing else to do on the island. By 1692, the species was extinct.

“Bringing back extinct animals isn’t just because we can,” says Forrest Galante, a scientist who serves as a conservation advisor to Colossal Biosciences. “In the case of the dodo, it will put back something of the food chain.” Removing the bird created a gap in the ecosystem of the environment, Recovering it, in theory, should help fill that gap. “You’re bringing back a creature, an individual and a group of them that will most importantly repair a damaged ecosystem, because they’ve been removed by human beings,” says Galante.

Just like in Jurassic Park, DNA is required to bring back an extinct animal. DNA from species like the dodo bird and woolly mammoth can be recovered. According to Galante, this DNA is then hatched into a related species that is living today. In the case of the dodo bird, a pigeon is used. When the pigeon lays eggs, dodo birds will hatch from the eggs.

The new dodos will not be the exact same type of bird, but close enough to fill the gaps their extinction left behind.

【1】What does Colossal Biosciences plan to do?

    A.Preserve existing endangered animals.

B.Document the history of extinct species.

C.Bring back some extinct animal species.

D.Teach people to raise and train dodo birds.

    A.Lack of food.

    B.Human activity.

    C.Loss of habitat.

    D.Coastal natural disasters.

A.It is beneficial to the ecosystem.

B.It is a little late to do such a thing.

D.It is unnecessary to save the species.

【4】What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A.The inspiration for collecting DNA.

B.How dodo birds hatch from their eggs.

C.The impact of pigeons on dodo birds.

D.The use of DNA for reliving dodo birds.

  • 23、Chinese young gun Yang Qian claimed the first gold of the Tokyo Olympics with a victory in women’s 10 m air rifle (气步枪) on July 24 in Tokyo, Japan. Russian markswoman Anastasiia Galashina took the silver and Nina Christen of Switzerland bagged the bronze. Yang, who was ranked sixth in the qualification, scored 251.8 points in the final, beating Galashina’s 251.1 points to set off Team China to a fine start in Tokyo.

Trailing by a mere 0.1 point ahead of the final two shots, Yang saw the gap widen despite a 10.7-point shot, as her rival made an impressive 10.8. However, when it came to the last shot that would define the eventual champion, Galashina surprisingly shot for 8.9 points, and lost the Olympic title to Yang, who had a 9.8.

“I am very happy and proud to win this gold,” said the 21-year-old in a calm tone. The result set the standard for future Olympic competitors as Tokyo 2020 is the first games under new competition rules for the event. “I was extremely nervous before the final shot, and all I could do was to calm down,” the young Olympic champion recalled. “I wasn’t as calm as I appeared to be. During the qualification and the final I kept adjusting my mentality (心态) gradually, trying to shake the pressure off me, and I think I did well in doing so.”

Yang had to stand up to a long wait for other shooters to finish their shots before reaching the final. The favored Indian duo, world record holder,Apurvi Chandela and world No.1 Elavenil Valarivan, bowed out after the 60-shot qualification round. • 24、A small but shining silver lining: The corona-virus has quickened the shift to pedal power in Europe. The German Cycling Association (ADFC) reports that Germans across the country are spending twice as much time biking as they were before the COVID-19. There is growing demand for bikes and shared-bike subscriptions, and now even shortages throughout bicycle supply chain. For bike shops it's an unexpected boom. So much so that it requires cities to improve their biking facilities.

In unimagined numbers, bikes are starting to take the place of cars in our cities. It has increased 930 miles of new bike lanes (车道) in Europe, “muscling aside cars on Europe’s city streets,” according to European Cyclists Federation. Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands are pioneering fast lanes for riders. “Pop-up lanes” are being used for bikes in Berlin and Paris; Rome has painted new bike lanes, in each case taking away lanes from cars.

Women riders are reportedly another big factor in the biking transformation. E-bikes are, too. E-bikes use an onboard battery to boost power when the rider is going up a hill, or just needs a rest. E-bikes have removed “the sweat factor”. Who wants to show up to work or a party sweaty?

The European Cyclists’ Federation states that bikes are also strongly supported by European governments to cut carbon and increase the quality of their cities. European countries provide direct financial stimulation for cyclists.

At the end of April, France announced a 20 million Euro plan to promote cycling after the end of the lockdown. The plan includes 50 Euro vouchers (代金券) for the repair of a bike. Italy worked on a regulation for Covid recovery, by means of which 120 million Euro was set aside to cover 70% and up to 500 Euro of the price of conventional, muscle-powered and electric bikes.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The impact of the pandemic on people's life.

B.The bicycle industry booms in Europe.

    C.The preference for bicycles globally.

D.The shift in choice on public transportation.

【2】How many factors contribute to the growing demand for bikes in Europe?

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Measures have been taken to encourage Europeans to use bikes.

B.E-bikes become popular with Europeans because they are lazy.

C.More women in Europe choose to go to work by bike than men.

D.Financial support is the main reason why Europeans choose bikes.

【4】Where is the passage probably taken from?

    A.A guidebook.

    B.A business plan.

    C.A science report.

    D.A newspaper.
