Candy Wang is a nineteen-year-old Asian pop star. But last time when I interviewed her, she told me she used to be really shy. As she got better at singing, she dared to sing in front of her class and even the whole school. Now she loves singing and becomes very famous.

Candy found that her life changed a lot after she became famous. Of course, there are many good things, like being able to travel and meet new people all the time. But there are also many bad things. For example, she always had to worry about how she appeared to others and to be very careful about what she said or did.

What was the worst, she didn’t have much private time any more.

1Candy Wang was born in Asia.

2Candy Wang is very popular at her school.

3Candy Wang’s life has changed a lot since she became famous.

4Now Candy Wang always meets good things every day.

5Candy Wang has much free time of her own.

  • 25、It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth (收费站). “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me,” she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were informed, “Some lady up ahead already paid your fare.”

It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something on a friend’s refrigerator: “Practice random(不经意的) kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” The phrase impressed her so much that she copied it down.

Judy Foreman spotted the same phrase on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she gave up and drove all the way back to copy it down. “I thought it was beautiful,” she said, explaining why she’d taken to writing it at the bottom of all her letters, “like a message from above.” Her husband, Frank, liked the phrase so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, admitting(承认) that though she liked it, she didn’t know where it came from or what it really meant.

Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the phrase down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.

“Here’s the idea,” Anne says. “Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly.” Her fantasies include painting the classrooms of shabby(破败的) schools, leaving hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and giving money secretly to a proud old lady. Anne says, “Kindness can build on itself as much as violence can.”

The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found your fare paid, who knows what you might have been inspired to do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!

1Why did Natalie Smith pay for the six cars behind her?

    A. She knew the car drivers well.   B. She wanted to show kindness.

    C. She hoped to please others.   D. She had seven tickets.

2Judy Foreman copied down the phrase because she ______.

    A. thought it was beautifully written   B. wanted to know what it really meant

    C. decided to write it on a warehouse wall   D. wanted her husband to put it up in the classroom

3Who came up with the phrase according to the passage?

    A. Judy Foreman.   B. Natalie Smith.   C. Alice Johnson.   D. Anne Herbert.

4Which of the following statements is closest in the meaning to the underlined sentence above?

    A. Kindness and violence can change the world.

    B. Kindness and violence can affect one’s behavior.

    C. Kindness and violence can reproduce themselves.

    D. Kindness and violence can shape one’s character.

5What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. People should practice random kindness to those in need.

    B. People who receive kindness are likely to offer it to others.

    C. People should practice random kindness to strangers they meet.

    D. People who receive kindness are likely to pay it back to the giver.

Almost every day, we learn of disasters (灾难) of one form or another through the Internet. Having a basic emergency (紧急情况) bag at home can be a lifesaver. These tips aim to help you develop your personal preparedness plan.

A rucksack (帆布背包) is more practical than a suitcase, as it allows you to have both hands free. The emergency rucksack should contain these things:

    Food &Drink

Drinking is more important than eating. Keep about 2 bottles of water per person a day in your rucksack. Make sure your food can be stored for long periods of time and that most of them can be eaten cold.

    First-aid medicine

Bandages, scissors, cotton balls and gauze (纱布), medical alcohol spray (酒精喷雾) are needed in most of the emergency.

    Clothing

Put some light clothes and shoes in your rucksack, and it’ll be better if the clothes and shoes are waterproof.(防水的)

    Radio &flashlight (手电筒)

The Internet only works when there is electric power, which could fail in a disaster. A radio or a flashlight can help you keep in touch with others then.

Put the rucksack in the place where you can get it in the shortest time.

【1】The passage is written to ________.

  • 27、There are millions of recipes (菜谱) hidden in the boxes and hearts of grandmother and parents. These family recipes are a special part of our family history. People have passed down some of them from generation (一代人) to generation.

“I realized I couldn’t go home every weekend for my mom's delicious dishes,” says Shreya. She is about to enter university and has recently started following her mother around the kitchen, taking notes on how to make her special tastes. She adds, “I am looking to the day when my kids will come to know of their grandmothers through the dishes they cooked.”

But many of us find it difficult to keep the food connection with our busy life. Even if we have time, not many of us take the effort to collect and record the recipes from our grandmothers and parents. We often get a recipe on the phone and take it down quickly on a piece of paper. We just stick it onto the fridge for a week or two and forget about it as soon as the paper disappears.

Actually, there are simple ways to keep family recipes. Scrapbooks (剪贴薄) are easily found in the market. You can even add photos to record every detail of your memories about the recipe. You can also use some popular apps like Story Scans to record family recipes. You just scan (扫描) the recipes and record the story behind each of them. It can become the most meaningful work you have ever done with and for your family.

Keeping family recipes is saving and honoring our tradition so that future generations can continue to make family ties stronger. Every time you remember your loved ones, recreate one of the dishes from your collection and let the memories from the good old days comfort you. So why not gift your kids a family recipe book when they are starting a new life?

【1】Why does Shreya follow her mother around the kitchen?

    A.To clean up the kitchen.

    B.To note down recipes.

    C.To prepare family dinners.

    D.To talk about family rules.

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Ways to record recipes can be easy.

B.Most people like writing recipe books.

C.Recipes have become popular with kids.

D.People often buy recipe books in the market.

【3】What does the underlined phrase "take the effort" mean?

    A.make wishes

    B.try our best

    C.would like

    D.think of ways

【4】Which question could best help us find out the writer's purpose (目的)?

A.Did the writer make us practise cooking?

B.Did the writer tell us how to cook well?
