  • 25、A 12-year-old girl from Virginia, US, never thought that a simple message she put online could bring her big problems. She posted the words, “Killing. Meet me in the library Tuesday”, with three emojis(表情符号) of a gun, a knife and a bomb(炸弹) on Instagram, a social media(社交媒体). She was told that she broke the law because of threatening(威胁) her school.

This problem is not far away from us. Not long ago, Ni Hanxiang, a Chinese student at a university in the US, was sent back to China after expressing on social media that he would kill his teachers if he failed to pass his exams.

In China, posting threatening words online is also against the law. In 2013, Wu Hongfei, a singer, got into trouble for saying on weibo that she wanted to blow up a building.

“Threatening happens not only face to face but also through the Internet, social media and the telephone,” said Mr. Cao, a lawyer from Chongqing. “Although the law of China protects people’s right of free speech, it doesn’t include words that threaten others’ lives and national safety.”

“Some people may not mean to threaten. They may just be trying to say “I’m strong”, said Fred Pratt, a lawyer from the US.

The girl’s mother said her daughter was a good kid who had never been in trouble before. Ni Hanxiang also said he didn’t realize that what he put online was so serious.

“But not knowing the law doesn’t mean the law will treat you any differently if you break it,” says David Allen Green, a lawyer from the UK. So, do you think we’d better spend a minute or two thinking about the words or emojis we use on social media before we press “send”?

【1】The 12-year-old girl from Virginia put the words “Killing. Meet me in the library Tuesday”, with three emojis ________.

    A.in her own diary

B.in a letter to her friend

    C.on a social media

D.on the wall of the library

【2】Ni Hanxiang was sent back to China ________.

A.because he broke the US law

    B.because he wasn’t honest

    C.after he killed his teachers

D.after he blew up a building

【3】From this passage, we can infer(推断) that ________.

A.Fred Pratt thinks some people may not mean to threaten

B.the girl’s mother didn’t think her daughter was a bad child

C.Cheating in an examination at school may get you into trouble

D.Putting threatening words on QQ may bring you problems

【4】This passage mainly wants to tell us that _______.

A.we shouldn’t break the US law if we study at a university in the US

B.students and singers shouldn’t post words or emojis on social media

C.students should study hard at school and not use the Internet too much

D.we should be careful when we send words or emojis on social media

  • 26、A new kind of sea sponge (海绵)found in Norfolk, England, has been named by a nine-year-old girl after a competition for local schools.

The unique purple sponge, which had never been seen in other parts of the world, was first discovered by divers(潜水者) off the north Norfolk coast. Although found in 2011, it had been without a name for almost ten years. In January this year, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS)— a group of people who work to protect the UK’s seas and coast—asked local school children to come up with suggestions.

Now the sponge has a name to be proud of: parpal dumplin, as suggested by nine-year-old Sylvie from Langham Village School. Sylvie said she came up with the name because “the sponge is purple and it looks like a dumpling”. Parpal dumpling is “purple dumpling” spoken in a Norfolk accent(口音). The judges all agreed that Sylvie’s suggestion should be the sponge’s name because “the spelling gives the sponge a strong connection to Norfolk”.

Sponges were once thought to be plants but they are actually simple sea animals. They feed on tiny things in sea water and help to keep the water clean in the process. Sponges have a very “lazy” lifestyle, with no means of moving themselves around. They are found on the seabed, rocks or even shells. They come in all kinds of different colours, shapes and sizes.

Parpal dumplin was first discovered in a place called the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds as part of a project called Seasearch. When diver Dawn Watson showed sponge expert Claire Goodwin what she found, Goodwin was sure that it was a kind of sponge unknown to science. Watson’s discovery is a special sponge, which takes the shape of whatever it covers. Parpal dumplin will now become its common name, and will be used until researchers have learned enough about it to suggest an official scientific one.

【1】What does the underlined word “unique” probably mean?

    A.strange and ugly

    B.special and unusual

    C.soft and beautiful

    D.meaningful and important

【2】Why was the name parpal dumplin chosen?

    A.Because it sounds interesting.

    B.Because Sylvie won the competition.

C.Because the sponge really looks like a purple dumpling.

D.Because its spelling is related to the place where it was found.

【3】What can we learn about sponges from Paragraph 4?

A.They help clean up sea water.

B.They are of the same size.

    C.They don’t like moving around.

    D.They are actually sea plants.

【4】Which is true about parpal dumplin?

    A.It has many colors.

B.It was found 20 years ago.

    C.It has only one shape.

    D.It was scientifically unknown before.

【5】What do we know from the last sentence?

A.Parpal dumplin is a common sponge.

B.Parpal dumplin is the sponge's official name.

C.There’s still a lot to be learned about parpal dumplin.

D.Researchers suggested an official name for the sponge.

  • 27、   Your parents might have told you that you'd go blind from reading in the dark, but you could make up for it by eating a lot of carrots. This is just one of the wrong ideas you may have heard of.Here are scientific explanations for three mistakes people often make about our eyes

Can eating carrots improve your eyesight(视力)?

Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, which is essential for our eyes.Vitamin A helps people to see in low light conditions. However, eating more carrots doesn’t help you see better.A certain number of carrots will help, but a large number of carrots will not make you get rid of(摆脱) your glasses.

If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?

Myopia(近视) can be inherited(经遗传得到) from parents.A study found that if both parents have myopia, there is a 33 to 60 percent chance that the child has.For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it is down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopia parents. So no matter how bad your parents’ eyesight is, you will have a chance of having good eyesight.

Is it true that people who are color-blind can't see colors?

Color blindness doesn’t mean that someone can’t see colors at all.It means that some has difficulty seeing differences in certain colors, usually green and red or blue and yellow.Color blindness is usually a condition caused by not having cone cells(视锥细胞) or having the cells that don't work. There are different levels of color blindness. Some people cannot tell the differences between colors when light isn’t bright, while others have difficulty in any light.

1Which of the following is the right idea about eating carrots?

A.Eating carrots doesn't help people see better.

B.People need to eat as many carrots as possible.

C.A certain number of carrots are enough for eyes.

D.Only people who have bad eyesight need to eat carrots.

2The underlined word “essential” in the passage means “__________”in Chinese.

    A.难以获取的 B.稍有影响的 C.极其罕见的 D.必不可少的

3What can we learn according to the passage?

A.Children may inherit myopia from their parents.

    B.Kids with non-myopia parents won't have myopia.

C.A kid has a 50% chance of having myopia if his or her father has myopia.

D.Kids with short-sighted parents won't have good eyesight.

4What can we know about color blindness from the passage?

A.Having no cone well may cause color blindness.

B.People who are color-blind cannot see colors at all.

C.Those who can't tell green from red are not really color-blind.

D.Most people who are color-blind can only see black and white.

5What's the best title for the passage?

A.Advice on staying away form myopia.

B.Reasons for bad eyesight and color blindness.

C.Explanations for some wrong ideas about eyes.

D.Medical information about improving your eyesight.
