二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Finally, I entered the university.Because of my careful savings, I did not have to work during the school year. Then, summer came and it was time to work harder than ever. I continued working as a waitress at night, instructed tennis camps several mornings a week and worked as a secretary for a few hours in the afternoons. I even decided to take a class at a community college. This class at the community college saved me $650. It was an extremely tiring summer and made me anxious to return to my relatively easy life at the university.

During my second and third years of undergraduate schooling, I decided to work about five hours per week in the campus admissions office answering phones. This provided a little spending money and kept me from drawing my savings out. The overall situation looked hopeful as I approached my senior year as long as I could make as much money as I had the previous summer. I wanted to go to Israel to study for 3 weeks, but I hesitated in making this decision because it would cost me $1,600 more to get the credits in Israel. About two weeks later my Mom called to tell me that I had $1,600 in the bank that I had forgotten about! One of my concerns about this trip was not only the cost, but the loss of time to make money; however, I made as much that summer in the ten weeks when I was at home as I had made during the fourteen weeks when I was at home the summer before. The way everything worked together to make this trip possible was one of the most exciting things that have ever happened to me.

This experience has shaped me in many important ways. The first thing that I learned was the importance of a strong work ethic. Working long hours did a lot to develop my character and helped me learn the value of a dollar. It also made me learn how to search for creative ways to settle difficult situations.

【1】Where did the writer probably work part-time before attending the university?

    A. In the tennis camps B. In a restaurant

    C. In a company   D. In the admissions office

【2】The writer took a class at a community college mainly because_____.

    A. summer time was tiring

    B. life there was relatively easy

    C. she wanted to save money

    D. it was required by the university

【3】The writer’s concern about the trip to Israel was that _____.

    A. her mother would not give her approval

    B. she would fail to get credits in Israel

    C. $1,600 couldn’t be drawn out in time

    D. a summer job would be lost

【4】The passage is mainly about how the writer _____.

    A. was shaped by working part-time through college

    B. managed to make full use of her vacation

    C. was forced to support herself by her mother

    D. made money on the college campus

  • 27、How to be a better reader

Reading is an extremely important skill.【1】 Here are some suggestions on how to be a better reader.

Know your reading purpose.【2】 The kind of reading you do in class or for your homework is different from how you read a novel for pleasure in the summer vacation. If you know your reading purposes, you can choose the best reading methods.

Use all the information in the book. Good textbooks are well-organized with title subtitles, introductions, summaries or conclusions. Many books also have pictures with captions(说明文字).【3】 Another aspect of good writing is that each paragraph has a topic sentence. If you concentrate on understanding the topic sentence this may help you to understand what comes next.

【4】 You can't really expect to understand a difficult book if you are trying to read in the same room with the television on and your little brother distracting(使某人分心) you. The same goes for reading on the bus on the way to school. You can't expect to read a textbook and listen to music at the same time either. Try to find a quiet and comfortable place with good light, and your dictionaries and other materials nearby.

Use your dictionary wisely. A common mistake of ESL students is to look up each unknown word in the texts they are given to read.【5】It can even make understanding more difficult because by the time you reach the end of the paragraph you have forgotten what you read at the beginning! So use your dictionary wisely.

A.Choose the right time to read.

B.Choose a right place to read.

C.Look at all these first before starting to read.

D.But it takes a long time and can be very boring.

E.The wider your vocabulary is, the easier you will find your reading.

F.Reading is also an excellent way to improve your general English.

G.the way you read a book or a text depends largely on your reasons for reading it.

  • 28、   Have you ever been on social media and seen your favorite celebrity talking about a product? These promotions might not be totally random, and are actually seen as a vital part of the marketing process. The question is: How do social media influencers ‘influence’ what you buy?

Human desire for status and making friends, combined with our need to belong to a group, makes us receptive to being ‘socially influenced’. Companies often use that desire to have a similar lifestyle to a celebrity we admire to sell or launch a product. So, what do these promotions actually do?

Firstly, they can be used to build brand awareness. A social media influencer should have a strong understanding of the platform they operate on, and therefore can create appealing content that not only sticks to the brand image, but sparks their followers’ interests in a product they might never have seen before.

Secondly, influencers can improve a company or product’s relationship with their customer base. According to InMoment’s 2018 US Retail CX Trends Report on customer loyalty, 77% of buyers have been brand loyal for more than ten years. This is also true of 60% of millennials. A popular celebrity can target key customers and talk or blog about a product, which can create an instant and lasting bond with them.

Lastly, influencers can improve customer buying habits with seemingly ‘unbiased opinions’. We are more likely to respond to ‘peer recommendation’ than traditional ads, meaning the fact we see an influencer as a ‘friend’ can make us less likely to be doubtful about what we are seeing.

So, the next time you see a celebrity talking about a product, you might want to consider that this could be a carefully worked-out marketing strategy designed to target your core needs. If you find yourself examining a product you’ve seen on social media, you may well have been influenced.

【1】Why do companies invite celebrities to launch products?

A.Because celebrities can improve the companies’ public images.

B.Because consumers like to share similarity with celebrities.

C.Because celebrities want to make more money.

D.Because consumers can make friends with celebrities.

【2】According to the passage, which strategy is often used by influencers?

    A.Setting up operation platforms.

    B.Sending gifts to customers.

    C.Improving relationship with the company.

    D.Taking advantage of their popularity.

【3】To customers, the recommendations of influencers seem to be ________.

    A.offensive

    B.subjective

    C.objective

    D.misleading

【4】The passage is mainly about ________.

    A.how social media make ads

B.how social media influence our lifestyle

C.how social influencers affect our buying

    D.how celebrities earn fame

  • 29、Climate forecast for 2050: cold London will be hot and dry like Barcelona, wet Seattle will be like drier San Francisco, and Washington D. C. will be more like today’s Nashville but with even greater changes in temperatures.

“We wanted to know what the climate will be for 520 major cities in 2050,” said Tom Crowther, a researcher at ETH Zürich. To show their findings the Crowther Lab in Switzerland created a map that pairs one city’s future climate conditions with current (当前的) ones. For example, Minneapolis in 2050 will be more like Kansas City, with Minneapolis’s warmest month shooting up from around 80 degrees Fahrenheit on average to more than 90° F in 2050. Generally speaking, cities in the northern half of the earth will have the climates cities more than 620 miles to their south have today, he said.

There are no good pairings for more than 22 percent of the world’s major cities — those with one million or more people now, researchers found. Those 115 cities, including Washington and 16 other U.S. cities, will have unprecedented (前所未有的) climate conditions by 2050 compared to what they saw in 2000, the baseline for the study. That doesn’t mean that Washington will be hotter than Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, today. It means that there is no current match for the wide climate changes in temperatures and rainfall the city will experience, said Crowther. Most of the 115 cities that will experience “novel” climates are in the tropics (热带地区) and include cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Rangoon, and Singapore. Changes in tropical cities will be less in terms of temperature increases, but will have more rain.

The study talked about climate in ways that will be more meaningful to the public and city planners. Knowing that London’s climate will be like Barcelona’s — which has experienced serious droughts requiring $25 million to buy drinking water from other countries in 2008 — can help planners prepare for what’s coming.

【1】What will Seattle’s climate be like in 2050?

    A.It will be less wet.

B.It will be cold but dry.

C.It will be drier than today’s San Francisco.

D.It will be the same as today’s Washington D.C.

【2】What is the Crowther Lab trying to do?

A.To mark 520 major cities on a map.

B.To show a city’s future climate using a current city.

C.To put today’s cities with similar climates in pairs.

D.To compare the northern half of the earth with the southern half.

【3】Which city’s temperature will change less from now to 2050?

    A.Minneapolis.

    B.Riyadh.

    C.Jakarta.

    D.Kansas City.

【4】What’s the importance of the study?

A.Make the public realize the danger.

B.Stop London’s situation from getting worse.

    C.Help Barcelona out of difficulty.

D.Get city planners to think ahead.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

They say that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, but the briefest look at books and the movies based on them would have anyone questioning this common saying. All too often, great words end up being turned into cinematic “turkeys”.

Good movies need good stories. If so, why has one of the earliest and greatest works in Western storytelling, Homer’s The Odysey, never had an equally great movie based on it? Movies need strong characters. So why have the movies based on The Great Gatsby never been praised as “great”? Movies of course need impressive images, so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies best described as “interesting”?

One of the key reasons behind this is that while a book usually takes a few days to read, a movie typically lasts under two hours. This means that great books can lose plot details and characters when they move to the big screen. This is something that even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can’t escape from, with fans of the books disappointed not to see some of their favourite characters in the movie version.

Movies also disappoint us when things don’t look the way we imagined them in the books. Take, for example, the epic movie Troy, which is in part based on Homer’s The Iliad and was met with mixed reviews from the audience. The most questionable issue was the actress chosen to play the part of Helen. Many people thought she didn’t live up to Helen’s title of “the most beautiful” woman in the world, influencing opinions of the movie to some extent.

There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Furthermore, books and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we should judge a movie in its own right, and not against its original source. Interestingly, audiences have in recent years turned to television series such as Sherlock or Mad Men, which can have many characters and gradual plot development. Perhaps, one day, readers of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most admired work will find themselves glued to their screens by episodes of The Great Gatsby.
