二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、What kinds of rooms are your favorite spots for studying? We are going to guess that they are probably not painted bright red or yellow. But maybe they should be. Imagine. You are suddenly asked to prepare for an exam. You have two rooms to choose from. One is a pale blue, and the other is a bright red. Which one do you settle into for study? Is one going to get your brain fired up for learning, or let you relax into a best state of concentration?

According to researchers at Curtin University in Australia, it might be the best to camp out in the bright red room when you are looking to store information. It might sound strange, since we often think of pale rooms — soft blues or light greens — as relaxing, or even reassuring (令人安心的). And they seem to be: The Curtin University study showed that pale colors made participants feel more relaxed and calm, while bright colors increased heart rate. But calming and relaxing, it turns out, may not always be the best environment for deep concentration or knowledge gaining. Reading comprehension (阅读理解) was much better in the bright rooms than in the paler rooms. Although participants reported that they generally preferred the pale rooms to study in as an approach to relax into work, the researchers saw just the opposite — that the bright-colored rooms seemed to lead to greater concentration.

While this might seem only surprising, the finding gets into a rather controversial area of psychological (心理学的) study. The Yerkes-Dodson Law says that a little bit of stress is good for achieving best performance, while too much stress negatively affects it. The higher heart rate and the reports of the bright colors creating a heavy atmosphere might just suggest that a little stress was good for the brain.

【1】What is the common idea mentioned in the first paragraph?

A.Few people like bright red or yellow.

B.Pale colors are connected with good grades.

C.Light-colored rooms make you feel nervous.

D.Bright-colored rooms are not good for studying.

【2】What might directly affect the research results according to Paragraph 2?

    A.Participants’ preferences in colors.

    B.How participants reacted to colors.

C.Time participants spent in the rooms.

D.What participants read in the rooms.

【3】What can be concluded from the study by Curtin University?

A.Most people know how to make use of colors.

B.Stress is needed when you want to concentrate.

C.The higher the stress, the better your performance.

D.Being relaxed is very important to people studying.

【4】What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Findings about people’s favourite room colors.

B.Bright-colored rooms can create a heavy atmosphere.

C.Room colors can affect one’s academic performance.

D.Light-colored rooms help people feel relaxed into work.

  • 27、What is the greatest threat to mankind? Maybe different people come up with different answers. However, there is no denying the fact that the only threat to humankind, apart from humankind itself, is, without any doubt, the nature. Natural disasters are the result of natural environmental processes that have a damaging effect on people. Natural disasters can come in many forms: such as geological events like earthquakes, tsunamis or mudrock flows, climatic events like storms, hurricanes or tornadoes and fire events like forest fires and wildfires.

The damage done by natural disasters is mainly as a result of our inability to predict exactly when they will happen. Although great progress has been made in designing and developing forecasting models for some natural disasters, complete certainty is still impossible. Even to be pessimistic, there is a possibility that human beings will never achieve accurate prediction of the happening of all natural disasters.

What’s more, even though we are able to predict these disasters from nature, preventing them is equally impossible. So we only have two ways to both prevent injuries or deaths and reduce economic losses to the least. These two methods are to prepare before a natural disaster comes to hit, and to manage the necessary resources and public services after a natural disaster strikes.

These two things have always been at the leading position of the projects of both national governments and international organizations. In the United States, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is responsible for the “preparedness, response and recovery planning” of both manmade and natural disasters.

Most natural disasters cannot be prevented, and both emergency preparation and good disaster management are the best ways to deal with them. Although natural events may appear to serve no purpose but simply to punish and destroy, natural disasters, a perfect symbol of the great power of the nature, are display of our planet’s evolution and its state of change.

【1】According to the passage, both humankind and nature ________.

    A.can be managed orderly

    B.can threaten human beings

    C.are hard to control

    D.have a large family

【2】Which can’t be regarded as a similarity between tornadoes and earthquakes?

    A.They can not be prevented.

    B.They are both geological events.

C.They are both the result of natural environmental processes.

    D.They cause damage to people.

【3】Why do natural disasters cause so much damage?

A.It is very difficult to predict when exactly they will happen.

B.Our forecasting equipment is too old for many natural disasters.

C.We don’t do enough preparation before natural disasters strike.

D.We don’t have the necessary public services to use after natural disasters strike.

【4】What can be concluded from the passage?

A.Natural disasters can not be predicted at all.

B.Human beings are pessimistic about the future.

C.Being wellprepared can avoid economic losses.

D.Good preparation and disaster management are advisable.

  • 29、   The art of psychologically controlling people so that they give away secret or sensitive information is known as social engineering. These are non-technical attacks, which rely on fooling people into ignoring regular safety procedures. People involved in this criminal act either target individuals for things such as bank information and passwords, or they might target the employees of entire organizations for sensitive company information, which they can then use to make a lot of quick money on the market.

The use of social engineering has increased greatly, because it’s much more difficult to hack (非法侵入) into someone’s software / password than it is to win their trust and make use of them to gain information that’s wanted. No matter how technically good the safety chain might be, information is always easy to attack if people with the information are easy to influence.

Methods of social engineering are various. For instance, the criminal uses some form of physical media like a CD, which is given a legal but interesting label. It’s then purposely left in a place like a restroom or elevator, where it’s sure to be found by someone. When any person finds the CD, he / she is expected to get curious about the label and the data it contains. However, on inserting the CD into a computer, they unknowingly install malware (恶意软件) into the system, which could give the attacker unlimited access, not only to that computer, but also to the company’s internal network.

Social engineering attacks are difficult to prevent completely. However, to make it difficult for social engineers and discourage them from attacking, some preventive measures need to be taken. For example, using advanced systems of security and different passwords for different accounts is very important. Regularly checking personal data and account details and making necessary upgrades to security are very helpful. More importantly, make sure that employees are trained to politely question people they don’t know, about their presence in the office building, and make sure that regular sessions (会议) and talks about security issues are held, so the problem of social engineering is always fresh in the minds of the employees.

1According to the author, social engineering _____.

    A.is a good skill B.helps keep secrets

C.discourages employees D.could probably break the law

2What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

A.More people are faced with social engineering.

B.Social engineering is popular in few countries.

C.It’s very easy to hack into someone’s software.

D.Social engineering has attracted wide attention.

3To introduce how social engineering is used in Paragraph 3, the author _____.

    A.makes a to-do list B.gives an example

    C.offers an argument D.makes a comparison

4What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The causes of social engineering. B.The effects of social engineering.

C.The ways to prevent social engineering. D.Different types of social engineering.
