二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、In high school I was very shy, content to hang around with my small group of friends and to concentrate on my courses. I was quickly labeled a "brain." I did so well that by the end of senior year I had perfect grades and enough college credits to give up an entire quarter of coursework.

But in early June of senior year, the principal called me into his office. He asked me to give a speech at graduation. I was surprised to look at him, my heart thumping. This was the reward for my hard work? I murmured something and fled the office, blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sure to have broken up my perfect record.

I finally agreed to a compromise. I would share the honor with five other students. I agreed to introduce my friend Judy, who would then give her own, full-length speech.

Graduation day soon arrived, I’d been practicing my speech for days, and I had it memorized. The first half hour of the ceremony passed in a blur, and then my moment came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the stage without falling down. I faced my classmates. My voice trembled a little, but mostly it was clear and strong. But within seconds, I was done and heading back to my seat. I accomplished something I’d never dreamed of — I spoke in front of hundreds of people.

Although I didn’t realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the confidence to take part in class at college, to give oral reports, and to eventually break free of my shyness. I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation — or ever. But I’m glad I did. I no longer hesitate when I’m faced with the prospect of doing something I feared. I know it may very well turn out to be one of my shining moments.

【1】Why was the writer called a "brain"?

A.She was the most intelligent student.

B.She was the head of her small group.

C.She was a bookworm all the time.

D.She did more coursework for good grades.

【2】What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.She ruined her health by studying hard.

B.She got the reward as was expected.

C.She was grateful for giving a speech.

D.She wasn't good at physics at school.

【3】How did the author feel at the beginning of the graduation speech?

    A.Excited.

    B.Moved.

    C.Scared.

    D.Embarrassed

【4】What did the speech bring to the author at last?

A.She had nothing to fear in life,

    B.She won enough college credits.

C.She got rid of her sense of shyness.

D.She desired to become a speaker.

  • 27、Having worked with ACE(African Conservation Experience) before. I knew that I had their complete support throughout my trip.

At the airport I was introduced to other volunteers who would be travelling to Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary with me. Upon arrival at the local town of Care for Wild, Nelspruit, we were met by a worker and we quickly got a sense of the importance of the project we were attending.

My first proper day at the project. Just wow. To feed a rhino baby. To approach (接近) them with their cute mouths open wide in preparation for their milk. The heartwarming moment was bittersweet though, as I remembered the reason these sweet babies were here… their mothers were killed. Hearing the stories that resulted with each beautiful baby arriving at the project was heartbreaking. I put all my heart into the work at this project.

Every day at the project was full of hard work. If you think it’s all about getting to cuddle (搂抱) and play with a baby rhino, that thought is wide of the mark as it’s not the purpose of this project. Preparing milk feeds. Bush walks. Night rides. The anti-poaching(反盗猎) dog unit training and the mounted unit checkups. But all the hard work was so worth it to see the babies running around or rolling in the mud(泥浆).

If you are considering volunteering at Care for Wild, do it. Yes, it is hard work. Yes, you will be tired. But trust me when I say it is all so worth it. I have left with a great amount of love for this animal and I will continue to be a supporter of their care and protection. I hope that one day, rhinos will be able to live in the wild freely. Until then, it is up to us to continue to work hard towards it. What are you waiting for?

【1】Why did the author go to Nelspruit?

    A.To have an adventure.

B.To get to know ACE further.

C.To do research on wild animals.

    D.To help with wildlife protection.

【2】How did the author feel during her first day at Care for Wild?

    A.Amazed but sad.

    B.Bored and lonely.

    C.Nervous but lucky.

    D.Proud and relaxed.

【3】What does the underlined part“wide of the mark”in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Creative.

    B.Comforting.

    C.Wrong.

    D.Unproven.

【4】What does the author want to do in the last paragraph?

A.Describe life at Care for Wild.

B.Call for people to stop poaching.

C.Give an introduction to Care for Wild.

D.Advise readers to volunteer at Care for Wild.

  • 28、It was winter of 1973 and Singaporean L. Shanmugam waited at the guardhouse of a building in the small town of Hermannsburg, Germany. The Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) instructor hoped for the once-in-a-lifetime chance to call on Kurt Hahn, the father of experiential education and founder of Outward Bound.

When a staff member told him that the elderly Hahn was a sick and weak man who did not entertain guests, Shanmugam still waited. He said he had hitchhiked(搭便车) his way from Wales to Germany, crossing the Alps just to show his great admiration for Hahn’s extraordinary achievements — if that was not the spirit of adventure, what was? The next moment, he was invited in. It was a dreamlike experience to finally meet Hahn, he recalled.

Over lunch, Shanmugam told the educator that he had come from a faraway country called Singapore. He talked about how the small flat tropical(热带的) island had little experience with mountaineering, polar exploration or extreme landscapes. Despite the limitations, this did not stop young Singaporeans from continuing to follow in Hahn’s rich legacy(遗产) of outdoor learning.

Hahn was among the earliest pioneers who believed that the outdoors could shape the personal development of young people. In 1934, as the founder and headmaster of Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland, he asked his students to make regular sailing expeditions(定期航海探险) and hill-walking.

During the Second World War, Hahn started a new kind of school in Aberdovey in Wales to train youths: a one-month course involving expeditions across three mountain ranges, rescue training and volunteer work in the local community. In 1941, Outward Bound, a charitable educational organization that provides adventure programs, was born.

Eighty years on, Outward Bound has become a national policy in Singapore. In following Hahn’s footsteps, the country has discovered that the act of communicating with the outdoors brings a certain kind of magic.

“We want all our young people to be strong, adaptable and creative. Outdoor adventure learning is especially useful in giving these lessons, which are very hard to teach in the classroom,” said Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

【1】Why did Shanmugam come to visit Hermannsburg?

A.To show his spirit of adventure.

B.To treat the old Hahn’s disease.

C.To express his admiration for Hahn.

D.To discuss the idea of experiential education.

【2】What made it hard for young Singaporeans to develop outdoor learning?

    A.Having few experienced instructors.

    B.Not having different landforms.

    C.Not receiving strong government support.

    D.Knowing little about experiential education.

【3】What did the schools in Moray and Aberdovey have in common?

    A.Both taught students adventure.

B.Both trained youths to be sailors.

    C.Both instructed research skills outdoors.

    D.Both encouraged student-centered learning.

【4】Which statement might Lee Hsien Loong agree with?

A.Educators should teach many different skills.

B.Students should learn about nature in many ways.

C.Young people should spend more time learning in the wild.

D.The government should provide a better environment for kids.

  • 29、The Mozart in the Machine

Sometime in the coming decades, an external system that collects and analyzes biometric data (生物特征数据) will probably be able to understand what’s going on in my body and in my brain much better than me. What will it do to art? Will art remain humanity’s last line of defense against the rise of the all-knowing algorithms (算法)?

In the modem world art is usually associated with human emotions. We tend to think that artists are controlling internal psychological forces, and that the whole purpose of art is to connect us with our emotions or to inspire in us some new feeling. Consequently, when we come to evaluate art, we tend to judge it by its emotional impact and to believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

In 1952, the composer John Cage composed a musical piece 4’33’’ This piece consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds during which no instrument plays anything. The piece encourages the audience to observe their inner experiences in order to examine what music is and what we expect of it. The message is that it is our own expectations and emotions that define music.

If art is defined by human emotions, what might happen once external algorithms are able to understand and manipulate human emotions better than Shakespeare, Picasso or Lennon? After all, emotions are not some mysterious forces — they are a biochemical process. Therefore, given enough biometric data and enough computing power, it might be possible to hack (入侵) love, hate, boredom and joy.

Of all forms of art, music is probably the most sensitive to Big Data analysis, because the inputs are the mathematical patterns of soundwaves, and the outputs are the electrochemical signals. Allow a learning machine to go over millions of musical experiences, and it will learn how particular inputs result in particular outputs.

Therefore, in the long run, algorithms may learn how to compose entire tunes, playing on human emotions as if they were a piano keyboard. Using your personal biometric data, the algorithms could even produce personalized melodies, which you alone in the entire world would appreciate.

Will this result in great art? That depends on the definition of art. If beauty is indeed in the ears of their listener, then biometric algorithms stand a chance of producing the best art in history. If art is about something deeper than human emotions, biometric algorithms might not make very good artists. But nor would most humans. In order to enter the art market, algorithms won’t have to begin by straight away beating Beethoven. It is enough if they outperform Justin Bieber.

【1】The author mentions the musical piece 4’33” to ________.

A.discuss the effect of silence in a musical piece

B.emphasize its emotional impact on the audience

C.show the significance of emotions in defining music

D.encourage the audience to observe their inner experiences

【2】What does the underlined word “manipulate” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Influence.

    B.Cover.

    C.Present.

    D.Appreciate.

【3】What can we learn from this passage?

A.Computers will take the place of artists one day.

B.Human emotions are much more than biochemical signals.

C.Art is the final wall of humanity against the all-knowing algorithms.

D.Personalized music may be available for people to enjoy in the future.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards the future of algorithms music?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Pessimistic.

    C.Confused.

    D.Positive.
