26、 The electricity workers' strike has been going on for three days. Below are some statements about the strike.
Mr. Mike Smith:
It wasn't an easy decision, but we have been asking for a reasonable wage for years. Now at last people are beginning to listen to us. We're only asking for a 25 percent increase in our wages. It's a pity so many people have to be inconvenienced by our strike, but please don't blame us. Blame the government for refusing our claim.
Mr. Tom Brown:
It's totally unreasonable to demand so much money when we are trying desperately to stop the prices going up. If wages go up, so do prices. If we give in to them, all the other unions would want more, with the inevitable result that the crisis would become uncontrollable. We offer them a 10 percent increase. And that's already too much. My stand on the strike is to persuade the Union to see the reason.
Mr. Bob Davis:
Everybody will be hurt by this strike, including the electricity workers themselves. The economy will be destroyed and many people will lose their jobs. Already people are saying that the big unions have too much power and shouldn't be allowed to strike. Of course the electricity workers want to get more money. Don't we all?
Miss Stater:
Let's face it. It's neither here nor there. The electricity workers are in a strong position. Perhaps we can't do anything about it. What I say is:let them have their 250 dollars so they can return to work. I mean, the government wastes the taxpayers' money all the time on unimportant things. How can anyone say 250 dollars is “too much”?Pop singers get more. Nurses get less. It's just one of those things.

27、It was the end of the school term and my son Tom had less than three months left before he would finish his six years at high school. During this time he had developed a love for basketball. Sadly, because of my work over the last twelve months, I had only been able to attend a few of his games; however, I was determined to get to his last game for the school term.
Tom’s team came out in the first 10 minutes with a burst of goals that saw them leading by just over 20 points at the end of the first half. The second half changed as the other team quickly played themselves back into the game. Tom’s team started to miss an increasing number of shots. It was at that point that the coach called his first time out.
The noise of the spectators (观众) became quiet as the coach spoke to them. He had the team standing in a half circle, but he squatted (蹲) down, looking up at them and fiving some very calm and clear instructions on what they needed to do in the last couple of minutes. As he stood up to allow the team to return to the court, I saw him give some further words of encouragement to all of them.
You could see that he knew that the team was fighting to save the game and that he needed to lift them up. By squatting down he placed himself in a position where he was talking up to them, rather than down or at them, and as the players went back onto the court his words of encouragement served to lift their energy and spirits.
Well, Tom’s team went on to win the final by 5 points. As I drove away I thought about what can happen to us all in our everyday life. One of my favourite quotes is about the half filled glass of water --- “Is it half full or is it half empty?” Like the coach, the answer to this quote all depends on how you look at things.

28、Let’s say you’re taking a Spanish test when an answer just won’t come to you, even though you saw it on last night’s practice quiz (10 sleepless hours ago). Or maybe you miss every free throw daring your basketball game-and to make things worse, you are not friendly to your teammate on the way to the locker room.
These may seem like unrelated events, but here’s the surprising truth: Each may be a direct consequence of your lack of sleep time. In one study, just an hour less of sleep each night made six-graders perform like fourth-graders on mental tests. Other research shows that sleep loss makes you run slower and miss more shots in sports, while doubling your possibility of injury.
Some experts even argue that teens would be less likely to take risks or suffer from anxiety if they could just get enough sleep. “When you lack sleep and you run into a stressful situation, whether it’s with your friends or something else, you’re going to get angry and upset, ” explains Dr. Kathleen Berchelmann, a doctor in St. Louis, Missouri.“I see a lot of depression and anxiety in teens who aren’t getting enough sleep. ”
It’s surprising to think that by spending more time in bed, you could lift your grade point average, get along with your loved ones, perform better on the field, and feel happier. But scientists say it’s true that many teens are walking around like dead souls without even realizing it.

29、Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been stuck indoors. Online classes and working from home mean a lot of sitting around on your butt. We already know that if we don’t move much, we get fatter, we get heart problems and we may get diabetes. 【1】.
A study of 937 Brazilian adults during the pandemic found that about one-third of them sat around for more than 10 hours per day. It reported that people who sat for too long often showed more symptoms of depression.
【2】. It found that each extra hour of sitting time at ages 8, 10 and 12 led to higher depression scores by age 18. Eighteen-year-olds who sat most often had depression scores 28 percent higher than those who were more active.
【3】. But according to Mats Hallgren from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, “sitting for too long can slow blood flow in the body, including blood flow to the brain.” It might also affect the growth of neurons in the brain. And couch potatoes might do other unhealthy things while sitting, such as snacking on junk food. All these may lead to depression.
The good news? 【4】. Aaron Kandola from University College London, UK, said “all types” of movement might help, even light activity. “It is great to exercise and play sports,” said Kandola. “But anything you can do to avoid sitting for too long will help with mood, stress and thinking clearly.” 【5】.
A.Scientists are not sure yet about the link between too much sitting and depression
B.But new studies have shown that it could hurt our mental health too
C.Sitting for a long time may cause more damage to children than adults
D.It’s easy to overcome
E.The key message is just to move more, more often
