  • 27、In south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autochthonous Region, an area renowned for(因……而闻名) its history of musical folklore(民俗), local residents(民众) have found a unique way to spread knowledge regarding(关于) AIDS prevention.

“We asked eight local singers to write and record songs about the disease. We think this is an effective way for local people to acquire AIDS knowledge,” said 55-year-old Huang Zhanghui, a resident of the village of Shantun. He said that the songs are played through loudspeakers in his village every evening.

The songwriting campaign(活动) has been effective because folk songs are a traditional art form in the region, making them more readily understandable and acceptable for local residents, Huang said.

Guangxi has been one of the hardest-hit areas in China in terms of the number of AIDS infections discovered there, ranking only after central China’s Henan Province.

Bama County, which administers(管理) Shantun, is known for the longevity of its residents. Nearly 2,500 of its residents are more than 80 years old, and another 81 have celebrated their 100th birthdays.

“We will not let AIDS threaten this tradition,” Huang said.

Huang was selected to be the head of the village’s AIDS prevention office just two months ago. In addition to the creation of folk songs, the office spreads AIDS prevention knowledge through text messages and publicly screened films.

“We have been making progress with our anti-AIDS campaign. Nearly all of our villagers know how AIDS is transmitted(传播) and how to prevent it,” he said.

Lu Meirong, 33, joined a local women’s anti-AIDS group in June.

“I used to flush(脸红) at the simple mention of sexual(性感) topics, ” she said. However, she says that she is now comfortably reminding her husband and other relatives to stay away from sex workers.

Wei Kaizhong, head of the health bureau(局) of the city of Hechi, believes that the mode(方式/风格) of peer educations on HIV/ AIDS prevention is necessary among villagers.

Nearly two-thirds of China’s AIDS carriers are believed to be living in rural areas. Rural residents have a significantly higher risk of contracting(感染) the disease than urban residents.

【1】Which kind of songs are the residents better at?

    A.Popular songs.

    B.Folk songs.

    C.Classical songs.

    D.Country songs.

【2】The important thing for local residents to prevent AIDS is ________.

B.Villagers turn to music to prevent spread of AIDS.

C.The people in Guangxi live a poor and hard life.

D.No measures in the world can cure AIDS disease.

  • 28、The United States seems to have become extremely enthusiastic about competition. The famous Scripps National Spelling Bee — an annual spelling contest — now allows kids who lost in regional competitions but whose parents agree to pay an entry fee along with their own food and accommodation to compete. And while some kids are working for what they call a “spelling career”, others are approaching chess competitions, dance competitions, cooking or other passions (爱好) that previous generations developed somewhat later in life.

I’m disturbed by the phenomenon, which seems to be getting worse and more intense (激烈的).

My teacher always warned us that competition is a destructive quality; that the goal is never to beat anyone else. I think he’ll be cheered by author Peggy Noonan’s idea that a lot of us are running our own races, trying to rise to the occasion and beat some past and limited conception of ourselves by doing something great.

I heartily agree. Instead of paying attention to the accomplishments or possessions of others, we need to focus on our own potential, our own growth and take pleasure in our own particular set of circumstances. The battle for life is not against anyone else but against the darkness inside that tries to bring us down. I wish you only well. Your good doesn’t reduce mine. Your bad gives me no pleasure.

Ms. Noonan also suggests that “you’re running your own race alongside others running theirs, and in the same direction. You’re doing something great together.” If we stop worrying about what our neighbor is earning or driving, the size of his house, the success of his marriage, the accomplishments of his children, we can sit back and enjoy our own lives. And if we all focus on what we each can achieve, regardless of anyone else, we have a chance of working as one, of actually being united.

Competition divides us. There’re winners and losers. But that’s a very limited picture of reality. It may apply to spelling bees and soccer matches and even in some college classes, but life isn’t about triumphing (战胜) over someone else; it’s about triumphing over ourselves. The only acceptable competition is one where we encourage each other to be the best human being possible, and that’s the only game where “everyone’s a winner”.

【1】What does the author worry about?

    A.Youth competition lacks diversity.

    B.Youth competition is expensive.

    C.Youth competition lacks fairness.

    D.Youth competition is fierce.

【2】What should we do in the battle for life according to the author?

    A.Know our competitors well.

B.Get rid of the bad things inside us.

C.Learn from others’ successes and failures.

    D.Leave everything to chance.

【3】How does Peggy Noonan describe the way people live their lives?

A.No one goes in the same direction as anyone else.

    B.One man’s loss is another man’s gain.

C.People follow parallel paths to each other.

D.People take turns to lead the race.

【4】Which could be the best title for the passage?

A.Competition Is a Good Thing, But Not to the Youth

B.Through Competition, We Become Better Ourselves

C.Your Real Competition Is With Yourself

D.Everyone Is a Winner in the Battle for Life

  • 29、Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia (百科全书), is the largest encyclopedia ever. An encyclopedia is a collection of informative articles about various things. Encyclopedias used to be printed as books. 【1】

“Wiki” is an internet term that means "a website that can be edited by the public." It comes from “wikiwiki”, a Hawaiian word for "quick". Two Americans, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, created Wikipedia in 2001. 【2】It has about 6 million articles in 300 languages and is visited by billions of people each day, who want to find information on just about anything – science, math, languages, art, culture, and company histories. There are articles on sports stars, too, and even long-forgotten soap operas from the 1970s.

【3】Except for a small number of pages, anyone can edit articles, anonymously (匿名地) or with a user account, and registered (注册的) users can create their own articles. Editing is unpaid, although Wikipedia does employ a small staff. Wikipedia is freely available to anyone with an internet connection. Its founders hoped that the model would make use of humanity's collective knowledge.

【4】Many Wikipedia pages contain errors, although the organization has a content review system that works to fix this problem. Several studies have concluded that Wikipedia is as accurate as most print encyclopedias. Indeed, a 2005 report in the journal Nature found it to be only slightly less reliable (可靠的) than Encyclopedia Britannica.

【5】It does not rely on advertising. Instead, all of its funds (资金) come from donations. Perhaps more importantly, the number of its volunteer editors is shrinking.

Despite these difficulties, Jimmy Wales says he will still stick to his dream. He has big plans for the future. He wants Wikipedia available in all of the world's languages.

    A.Today Wikipedia faces many challenges.

B.Wikipedia employs an open editing model.

C.It allows users to get information within seconds.

D.It is now the fifth-most visited website on the internet.

E.Most of its editors are volunteers.

F.Now, they are mostly found online.

G.However, some people doubt the accuracy (准确性) of Wikipedia's content.
