  • 22、   Commuters of the future could get some relief from congested roads especially the peak-hour traffic if Uber’s plans for flying taxis work out.

The battery-powered aircraft looks like a cross between a small plane and a helicopter, with fixed wings and rotors (旋转器). It was presented at an international technology conference in Lisbon, Portugal.

Catering for the need of shorter city travel time, the vehicle is intended to soar over traffic congestion. Uber hopes it will eventually become a form of convenient mass transport and cost commuters aboard less than using their own car, though initially it will be more expensive than that, Uber’s Chief Product Officer Jeff Holden said.

The scheme still faces plenty of challenges, including certification of the new vehicle by authorities, pilot training and constructing urban air traffic management systems that prevent collisions.

Holden declared that Uber is joining NASA’s project to expand air traffic systems, which scores of other companies already belong to.

He told The Associated Press in an interview that he has no dollar figure for the total investment. He said Uber is putting some of its own money into the project, developing software, while other investors are also involved, such as aircraft manufacturers that are developing the vehicle and real estate companies that are providing so-called “skyports” where people will catch their airborne taxi.

Uber is making a bid to reform and polish up its image which has been damaged by certain negative news. Holden said those episodes did not slow development of the flying taxi project of the great company that is in transition.

1What result is Uber’s flying taxis aimed to achieve?

A.Shorter city travel time. B.Smooth flow of traffic.

    C.Higher economic efficiency. D.Convenience of people’s life.

2Which of the statement is correct according to Holden?

A.Flying taxis are more cost-effective than driving private cars.

B.Uber has to cooperate with NASA to reach it’s goal.

C.The success of this project, if possible, will polish up Uber’s image.

D.The final achievement of Uber’s goal relies not only on the company itself.

3What does the underlined word “episodes” in the paragraph probably mean?

    A.trouble B.exchange

    C.incident D.process

4What is implied in the last paragraph?

A.Uber is committed to developing the flying taxi project.

B.Uber is to accomplish it’s transition period in the near future.

C.Uber’s reputation used to be ruined by rumors.

D.Uber has recovered from it’s damaged image.

  • 23、You plan and hope, keeping a close eye on the forecast. Even so, the vacation you expect gets ruined by the bad weather. I’m pretty sure that everyone has their story of the plans messed up by weather forecasts. 【1】Why is it that even with all the technological wonders in the world, it’s still a challenge to predict the weather?

【2】A lot of data from different sources, like satellites, are accumulated and analyzed. Powerful computers use this data to make predictions. The idea of using numerical analysis to predict the weather originated in the 1920s with Lewis Fry Richardson’s writings. Later, with the help of supercomputers, this became a more practical approach.

Weather forecasts often go wrong, but not quite as often as you might think. We tend to focus mostly on what goes wrong, so it feels like the forecasts are always inaccurate. A five-day forecast is actually pretty accurate — 【3】For a seven-day forecast, the numbers go down to about 80%. But add more days and the uncertainty necessarily builds. These numbers are also much better than what they used to be. 【4】

To determine the state of the atmosphere at any point, and therefore make a forecast, several different changes must be taken into account. 【5】The changes are used as initial conditions that can be fed into mathematical models. The models are designed based on patterns in historical data and the typical behavior of weather. Advancements in data collection and the processing power of computers also help explain why forecasts today have improved so dramatically.

A.You can trust the forecast at your own risk.

B.Why are our weather forecasts so inaccurate?

C.The forecasts are right about 90% of the time.

D.Weather forecasting is a complicated process.

E.These deal with wind, temperature, pressure, and others.

F.A five-day forecast today is as accurate as a one-day forecast in 1980.

G.There are many changes involved in describing the state of the atmosphere.

  • 24、Bad drivers in the District could soon get a serious warning sent straight to their cell phones. The city is working to identify drivers with a history of traffic violations, such as speeding and driving through a red light, to send messages warning them of their history of infraction(违规) as well as their risks of getting into a fatal crash.

City officials say they hope the pointed messages(定制信息) will decrease dangerous road behaviors. “We know that there is a number of drivers that are putting others at serious risk with excessive speeding and red-light running,” said Jeff Marootian, director of the city's Department of Transportation, one of the agencies leading the effort. “We're hoping that this creative approach can ultimately reduce serious injury and fatality crashes.”

“This is a creative approach that we haven't tried before, and we think that it is worth the effort,” Marootian said. The concept, which D.C. officials say is a first among cities nationwide, is the latest effort to target dangerous drivers in a city where serious and fatal crashes are on the rise. City leaders said evidence shows drivers with multiple traffic violations are more likely to be involved in crashes.

Researchers have studied the relationship between repeat traffic offenders and serious collisions, with some data suggesting a strong connection between the two. But some researchers also have pointed to other factors at play, such as the amount of time the driver spends on the road and exposure to traffic enforcement(强制性)systems.

A team from The Lab led by Muriel E. Bowser, is examining data from the District's automated traffic enforcement program to predict a driver's likelihood of being involved in a serious crash. It will create a campaign that could include text messages and mail sent to a sample of high-risk drivers. “We will evaluate whether drivers who receive these messages have fewer red-light violations, speeding violations, and ultimately, crashes, compared to the group of high-risk drivers who do not receive the messages,” according to The Lab.

The program is among the latest road-safety measures with the purpose of cutting the growing number of traffic injuries and fatalities. Although the new messages appear as a warning to higher-risk drivers, city officials said the intention is to educate the recipient, Marootian said there is no violation or fine attached to the message and that the campaign is to use data to directly communicate with individual drivers. Some questioned whether the message will work.

【1】What do we know about the approach to sending pointed messages?

A.It may put the drivers at serious risk of crashing.

B.It can identify drivers with records of traffic accidents.

C.It will completely reduce serious injury and fatality crashes.

D.It is the newest attempt in response to the rising crashes.

【2】What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?

A.Traffic offenders always cause serious accidents.

B.New drivers bear less blame for serious collisions.

C.Different elements may contribute to serious accidents.

D.Traffic offenders should spend less much time on the road.

【3】How do the team from The Lab know whether the approach works?

A.By sending messages to the drivers.

B.By comparing the impact of the approach on two groups.

C.By predicting the possibility of a driver's involvement in a crash.

D.By checking the response of the receivers who get the messages.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.A traffic report.

    B.A targeted approach.

    C.A professional survey.

    D.A teaching program.
