二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、There’s a case to be made, from things like Google search figures, that Robert Frost’s poem The Road Not Taken you know, the one about two paths diverging (分开) in a wood is the most popular in modern history. Yet people still can’t agree what it means. On the surface, it’s a fridge-magnet cliché (陈词滥调) on the importance of taking risks and choosing the road less travelled. But many argue it slyly mocks (暗讽) that American belief in the individual’s power to determine his or her future. After all, the poet admits that both paths look roughly similarly well-travelled. And how could he be sure he took the right one? He’ll never know where the other leads. Looking back at our life histories, we tell ourselves we faced important dilemmas and chose wisely. But maybe only because it’s too awful to admit we’re stumbling (跌跌撞撞地走) mapless among the trees, or that our choices don’t make much difference.

Two psychologists, Karalyn Enz and Jennifer Talarico, throw light on these matters in a new study with a title that nods to Frost: Forks In The Road. They sought to clarify how people think about “turning points” versus “transitions” in life. A turning point, by their definition, is a moment that changes your future deciding to leave a job or marriage, say but often isn’t visible from the outside, at least at first. “Transitions” involve big external changes: going to university, marrying, emigrating (迁出). Sometimes the two go together, as when you move to a new place and realize it’s where you belong. (“New Yorkers are born all over the country,” Delia Ephron said, “and then they come to New York and it hits them: oh, that’s who I am.”) But it’s turning points we remember as most significant, Enz and Talarico conclude, whether or not they also involve transitions.

The distinction is useful: it underlines how the most outwardly obvious life changes aren’t always those with the biggest impact. Hence the famous “focusing illusion”, which describes how we exaggerate (夸大) the importance of a single factor on happiness: you switch jobs, or spouses, only to discover you brought the same troublesome old you to the new situation. Before it became a joke, “midlife crisis” referred to a turning point that happens because your circumstances don’t change, when your old life stops feeling meaningful. Turning points can be caused by mundane (世俗的) things the offhand remark that makes you realize you’re in the wrong life or by nothing at all.

【1Why do some people think the poem makes fun of the American belief?

    A. Because the two roads are more or less similar in the poet’s view.

    B. Because Americans believe they can decide their future themselves.

    C. Because Americans can find their way easily in a forest just with a map.

    D. Because Americans surely know which road to take without consideration.

【2】Which of the following can be considered as a transition?

    A. Your experience of midlife crisis.

    B. Your choice of the road to take.

    C. Your decision to travel abroad.

    D. Your move into a new flat.

【3What can we infer from this passage?

    A. Turning points involving transitions are often remembered as most significant.

    B. The biggest impact is often characterized with obvious outside changes.

    C. A fundamental change is often affected by more than one single factor.

    D. We can rid ourselves of the unpleasant past with the change of a job.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A. Is our fate in our own hands?

    B. Must people make changes in life?

    C. Should we choose the road less travelled?

    D. Are turning points connected with transitions?

  • 22、It began as a game: High school and college students studying computer technology figured out they could use personal computers to break into telephone company computers and make free, long-distance telephone calls. These young computer talents soon gained the name "hackers".

Police arrested a few hackers, but many went on to even more complex hacking. One of them was arrested for making illegal telephone calls and later he used a phone to change a police officer's credit records to get back at the officer for arresting him. He also used a computer to change his college records to give himself better grades.

As hackers gained experience, they began invading computers at banks, airlines and other businesses. In one case a hacker instructed an airline' s computer to give him free airplane tickets.

The U.S. government is worried that hackers may break into its networks of defense computers. The government's secrets are easily attacked because thousands of government computers are connected by telephone lines that hackers can get into.

In November 1988, a college student entered a U.S. Defense Department computer network called Arpanet. The hacker injected a computer program that made copies of itself throughout Arpanet. Some hackers use viruses to destroy all the data in a computer. But in this case, government officials shut down the network before the program reached every computer in the system. Shutting down the system angered many researchers who were using the computers. The hacker turned himself in to the police and he was charged with a crime.

The incident put the spotlight on computer hacking in the United States. Many companies have hired experts to protect their computers from hackers, and many computer experts now advise companies on how to protect their computers.

The U.S. government believes foreign governments have hired hackers to try to break into top-secret defense computers.

Experts disagree over whether a computer network can ever be safe from hacking. But in the future, some of the most outstanding minds in the U.S. will be working to frustrate the attempts of computer hackers.

【1】What did the first hackers do?

    A.They broke into government computers.

    B.They destroyed airplane ticket systems.

    C.They played computer games.

    D.They made free phone calls.

【2】Why can U.S. government computers be easily hacked into?

    A.They have no defense systems.

B.They are connected by telephone lines.

C.They are partly accessible to the public.

    D.They lack complex processing programs.

【3】What happened to the government computers in November 1988?

A.They lost all of the important data.

B.They were shut down by researchers.

C.They were invaded by a college student.

D.They got totally ruined by a computer program.

【4】What did companies decide to do to protect their computer systems?

    A.Employ computer talents.

    B.Build secret defense systems.

    C.Ask the government for help.

D.Collect and analyze the data of hackers.

  • 23、   UN Humanitarian Chief Mark Lowcock today released US$15 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help fund global efforts to contain the COVID-19 virus.

The announcement came as the World Health Organization (WHO) upgraded the global risk of the coronavirus outbreak to “very high” – its top level of risk assessment. The WHO has said there is still a chance of containing the virus if its chain of transmission is broken.

The UN funding has been released to the WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It will fund essential activities including being aware of the spread of the virus, investigating cases, and putting national laboratories into use.

The WHO has called for US$675 million to fund the fight against coronavirus. There is a window of opportunity to contain the spread of the virus if countries take strong measures to detect cases early, isolate and care for patients, and trace contacts.

Emergency Relief Coordinator and Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock said, “We do not yet see evidence that the virus is spreading freely. As long as that’s the case, we still have a chance of containing it, by strengthening surveillance, conducting thorough outbreak investigations to identify contacts and applying appropriate measures to prevent further spread.”

“This announcement from the UN’s Emergency Fund will help countries with fragile health systems improve their detection and response operations. It has the potential to save the lives of millions of vulnerable people.” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said,“The potential spread of the virus to countries with weaker health systems is one of our biggest concerns. These funds will help support these countries get ready for detecting and isolating cases, protecting their health workers, and treating patients with dignity and appropriate care. This will help us save lives and push back the virus.”

“At this critical moment, every effort must be made to push back against the outbreak,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore. “These funds will support our global efforts to promote weaker health systems and inform children, pregnant women and families about how to protect themselves.”

  • 24、   Wang Tao, a Chinese fashion designer, released her fall-winter 2019 collection in New York on February 9, the tenth time her brand, Taoray Wang, has been featured at the New York Fashion Week.

Tiffany Trump, a fan of Taoray Wang, wore a white double-breasted coat by Wang to her father's inauguration(就职典礼)ceremony in January 2017.
