  • 21、Japan is a good destination for travelers. Here’re four places to visit in Japan.

    Osaka

Osaka is one of Japan’s largest cities. It is tops for street food. Don’t miss its signature dish, takoyaki. It also has the most dramatic night scenes. The city has its own pace, spirit and enthusiasm for life. Its unofficial slogan is kuidaore (eat until you drop).

    Naoshima

Naoshima is one of Japan’s great success. It was a rural island and nearly became a ghost town, but now a world-class center for contemporary art. The mix of avant-garde (前卫派思想) and rural Japan is attractive. It has also inspired some Japanese to pursue as lower life outside the big cities, relocating to Naoshima to open cafes and inns.

    Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is among Japan’s most revered and timeless attractions. A large number of people climb it every year. Those who’d rather search for picture-perfect views from the peak nearby can follow in the steps of Japan’s most famous painters and poets.

    Yakushima

Yakushima, a small island off the coast of southern Kyushu, is often described as magical and enchanting and otherworldly even. Home to some of Japan’s last primeval (原始的) forests, you’ll find the yakusugi, an ancient tree native to the island whose giant roots form alien tentacles (触手), Hiking trails underneath them cover craggy terrain, often fuzzy with moss. The landscape here is believed to have inspired the film Princess Mononoke.

  • 22、   Renewable energy projects, including onshore and offshore wind and solar farms, have so far been subsidized (资助) by government support schemes. This has led to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.

However, the most recently approved offshore wind projects will most likely operate with ‘negative subsidies’ — paying money back to the government. The money will go towards reducing household energy bills as the offshore wind farms start producing power in the mid-2020s.

This is the conclusion of an analysis by an international team led by Imperial College London researchers published today in Nature Energy.

Lead researcher Dr Malte Jansen, from the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial, said: “Offshore wind power will soon be so cheap to produce that it will undercut fossil-fueled power stations and may be the cheapest form of energy for the UK. Energy subsidies used to push up energy bills, but within a few years cheap renewable energy will see them brought down for the first time. This is an astonishing development.”

The analysis for five countries in Europe, including the UK, focused on a series of government auctions (拍卖) for offshore wind farms between February 2015 and September 2019. Companies that want to build wind farms bid in the auctions by stating the price at which they will sell the energy they produce to the government.

These are known as ‘contracts for difference’ or CfDs. If a company’s bid is higher than the wholesale electricity price on the UK market once the wind farm is up and running, then the company will receive a subsidy from the government to top up the price.

However, if the stated price (规定价格) is less than the wholesale price, then the company will pay the government back the difference. This payback is then passed through to consumer’s energy bills, reducing the amount that homes and businesses will pay for electricity.

The winning companies said they could build new offshore wind farms for around £40 per megawatt hour (MWh) of power. This was a new record set by these wind farms with bids 30 percent lower than just two years earlier.

【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Offshore wind farms to be built in the UK could reduce household energy bills by producing electricity very cheaply.

B.Offshore wind farms will not be subsidized by government in the near future.

    C.The importance of CfDs.

    D.The operation of negative subsidies.

【2】According to Paragraph 2, offshore wind farms ________.

A.will stop producing power in the mid-2020s

B.are paying money back to the government

C.will help reduce household energy bills

D.will all operate with ‘negative subsidies’

【3】The underlined words “top up” in Paragraph 6 probably mean ________.

    A.make up

    B.take up

    C.cover

    D.fill up

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The renewable energy projects will lead to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.

B.The company whose bid is less than the wholesale electricity price will receive a subsidy.

C.The stated electricity price is now higher than the wholesale electricity price.

D.Fossil-fueled power will be soon produced cheaply.

  • 23、The world is going through a basic transformation, which is changing the way we live, work and think. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is bringing dramatic change and giving rise to a future filled with exciting opportunities and new challenges. Together governments and businesses must find solutions to society’s most pressing needs—from creating a carbon-free economy to tackling population growth and urbanization.

In any period of rapid change there is a trend to look for a simple method, to greet the new things and replace the old way of doing things. But a close look at the facts tells a different story. Complex problems require many solutions working in harmony to enable positive change.

The challenge for scientists and the engineers is to provide solutions in fact, data and today’s realities. And while technologies offer new tools to help uncover solutions, the process also requires hard work, imagination and lots of improvement.

Success rests on performing practical, realistic, long-term solutions that make the world cleaner, safer and more sustainable.

The environment is a case in point. Much of the public debate has centered on the central role of renewable power sources in realizing a low-carbon energy future. While the industry is fully behind the developing renewables, today we understand a low or zero-carbon future depends on adopting a multifaceted approach.

We cannot control sunshine levels or decide when the wind blows, which means solar power and wind power generators will produce too much or too little energy at times. The transition to renewables needs to take account of serious considerations.

Batteries have been much discussed as a means of storing extra energy, but there are other choices. Power-to-X technologies enable spare energy created by renewables to be stored and redistributed when and where it is needed.

【1】What’s the main idea of paragraph 2?

A.Society’s dramatic change calls for simple methods.

B.Old means of doing things should be replaced by new ones.

C.Society needs positive change for development.

D.Some problems should be solved in combined ways.

【2】What does the author expect scientists and engineers to do?

A.Offer new tools to uncover solutions.

    B.Tackle population growth.

    C.Work hard with imagination.

D.Make the world better with a simple method.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude to the consumption of the solar power and wind power?

    A.Uncertain.

    B.Cautious.

    C.Unconfident.

    D.Doubtful.

【4】Which of the following is the advantage of Power-to-X technologies?

    A.They can adjust power supply.

    B.They can conserve energy.

    C.They help make more electricity.

D.They can create power from wind and sun.

  • 24、Travelling to watch their team play at the World Cup took a little longer than usual for two French fans. Mehdi Balamissa and Gabriel Martin decided the best way to travel from France to Qatar was on two wheels. The friends spent three months travelling 7,000 kilometers by bicycle to reach Qatar 2022 and watch their beloved France defend its title.

“It was a crazy idea, but we’re the kind of people that have big ideas and don’t want to have any regrets,” Balamissa said, as both spoke to CNN Sport a day after arriving in the country. “So, since we are both self-employed, we decided to block off three months of our time and come to Qatar.”

The pair started their mammoth (庞大的) journey at the Stade de France in Paris, home of the French national team, and finished at the stunning Lusail Stadium, the venue that would host the final at Qatar 2022. They would travel on average 115 kilometers per day, taking appropriate rest days when needed. They battled through the heat of the desert in Saudi Arabia as well as flooded woodland areas in Hungary as they made their winding way to Qatar, stopping off at campsites, lodges (乡间小舍) and hotels to sleep.

The idea came about after cycling from France to Italy to watch their country play in the UEFA Nations League last year and they wanted to test themselves with a much longer trip. They hoped their trip would promote the benefits of sustainable travel and said they planned to offer cycling workshops to children from disadvantaged backgrounds when they eventually arrived home.

The two cyclists encountered many problems along the way, including dozens of flat tires, but relied on their infectiously positive attitude to get them through. The pair laugh as they recall the time they had to travel 15 hours to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in order to find a bike repair shop before travelling 15 hours back to the exact point where they had stopped.

“We had many troubles, but we fixed them as we went,” Martin told CNN.

【1】Why did Balamissa and Martin go to Qatar?

    A.To achieve their big ideas.

B.To set them apart from the other fans.

C.To close off three months for no regrets.

D.To watch their country defending its champion.

【2】What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the two fans?

    A.Their travelling plan.

    B.Their severe challenges.

    C.The schedule about their journey。

    D.The scenery along their journey.

【3】What’s the purpose of the two fans, cycling trip?

A.To explore the secrets and laws of nature.

    B.To raise people’s awareness of eco-tourism.

C.To benefit more from the cycling workshops.

D.To be involved in the UEFA Nations League.

【4】What can we learn from Balamissa and Martin’s story?

    A.Attitude is everything.

    B.Life lies in sports.

    C.Life needs a slow pace.
