二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、My parents ran the Pagonis restaurant, a small eatery in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, and my first real job, when I was six years old, was shining diners’ shoes. My duties increased as I grew older. By the age of ten I was clearing tables and working as the janitor(清洁工). Dad beamed when he told me that I was the best “mop guy” he’d ever had.

Working in the restaurant was a source of great pride because I was pitching in for the good of the whole family. But my father made it clear. I had to meet certain standards to be part of the team. I had to be responsible, hard-working and polite to the customers.

Except for the shoeshine job, I was never paid for any work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of telling Dad I thought he ‘should give me $10 a week. He said, “Okay, then how about you paying me for the three meals a day you eat here? And for the times you bring in your buddies for free sodas?” He figured I owed him about $40 a week. This taught me that when you negotiate, you’d better know the other side’s arguments as well as your own.

I remember coming home to Charleroi after being away in the Army about two years. I had just been promoted to captain and was full of pride as I walked into my parents’ restaurant. The first thing Dad said was, “It’s the janitor’s day off. How about you cleaning up tonight?”“I can’t believe this!” I thought. “I’m an officer in the United States Army!” But it didn’t matter. As far as Dad was concerned, I was just another member of the team. I reached for the mop.

Working for Dad had taught me that loyalty to a team comes first. It doesn’t matter whether that team is involved in a family restaurant or in the Army.

  • 22、When romantic partners argue over things like finances, jealousy, or other interpersonal issues, they tend to employ their current feelings as fuel for a heated argument. But thinking about the future helps overcome relationship conflicts, according to a University of Waterloo study just published online in Social Psychological and Personality Science. Alex Huynh, a doctoral candidate in psychology is the lead author of the study, which he published with Igor Grossmann from the University of Waterloo, and Daniel Yang from Yale University.

Previous research has shown that third-perspective reasoning can be a positive strategy for reconciliation(调解) of interpersonal struggles. Huynh and his collaborators investigated whether similar benefit can be induced by simply thinking about the future. Study participants were instructed to reflect on a recent conflict with a romantic partner or a close friend. One group of participants were then asked to describe how they would feel about the conflict one year in the future, while another group was asked to describe how they feel in the present.

The team examined participants’ written responses through a text-analysis program for their use of pronouns — such as I, me, she, he. These choices of pronouns were used to capture participants’ focus on the feelings and behaviour of those involved in the conflict. Written responses were also examined for forgiveness and reinterpreting the conflict more positively, both of which implied the participants’ use of reasoning strategies.

The researchers found that envisioning future relationship affected both participants’ focus on their feelings, and their reasoning strategies. As a result, participants reported more positivity about their relationship altogether, especially when study participants extended their thinking about the relationship a year into the future.

“Our study demonstrates that adopting a future-oriented perspective in the context of a relationship conflict — reflecting on how one might feel a year from now — may be a valuable coping tool for one’s psychological happiness and relationship well-being,” said Huynh.

【1】What do romantic partners do in face of most disagreements?

A.They lose faith in their future.

B.They focus on their present feelings.

C.They look forward to a fierce conflict.

D.They care more about financial problems.

【2】What does the underlined word “induced” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

    A.Caused.

    B.Explained.

    C.Reduced.

    D.Improved.

【3】What do we know about the study?

A.All the study participants described how they felt both in the present and in the future.

B.Study participants described their recent relationship with their romance partners or friends.

C.A text-analysis program was employed to examine participants’ use of negative words.

D.The reasoning strategies in participants’ written responses were well worthy of note.

【4】What can be the best title of the text?

A.You have a year to solve your interpersonal problems!

B.Thinking about future is essential for relationship maintenance!

C.Your current feelings are the real cause of your heated arguments!

D.Beneficial reasoning is a positive strategy for reconciliation!

  • 23、   A recent study found that eating fish at least twice a week led to a 50 percent reduction in the risk that a child would develop asthma(哮喘) between the ages of 11 and 14 — but only if the children carried a certain type of he fatty acid desaturase(去饱和酶) gene, which is known to be associated with lower levels of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in the blood.

The researchers suspect that a diet that contains plenty of fish, especially oily varieties such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, could boost long-chain omega-3 levels and may protect against asthma by reducing inflammation(炎症) of the airways.

Of the children in the study with the gene variant(变体), the 25 percent who ate the most fish consumed at least 280 grams a week, equal to two adult-sized amounts. They had half the risk of developing asthma compared with the 25 percent who consumed the least fish—almost none.

Seif Shaheen, senior author of the study, said: “It is possible that a poor diet may increase the risk of developing asthma, but until now most studies have taken ‘snapshot’, measuring diet and asthma over a short period of time. Instead, we measured diet and then followed up children over many years to see who developed asthma and who didn’t.”

The study followed two groups of children, about 4,000 in the southwest of England and about 2,000 in Sweden. The die of the English children was assessed when they were seven and they were tracked until they were 14.

Professor Shaheen said: “Although we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, based on our findings, it would nevertheless be sensible for children in the UK to consume more fish, as few currently achieve recommended intake.”

【1】What is the possible effect of eating fish?

A.To produce the fatty acid desaturase gene.

    B.To increase the long-chain Omega-3 levels.

C.To fight against inflammation of the airways.

D.To reduce the levels of oily varieties in the blood.

【2】How much fish does an adult eat a week accordingly?

    A.70 grams.

    B.140 grams.

    C.280 grams.

    D.560 grams.

【3】What is Shaheen’s study different from most of the other studies?

A.Most previous studies used cameras to do researches mainly.

B.Shaheen’s study did research on more children than ever.

C.Shaheen’s studied the children in a longer period of time.

D.Most previous studies had different results from Shaheen’s study.

【4】What can we know from Professor Shaheen’s words?

A.Eating fish is a good cure for asthma in children.

B.The more fish we eat,the healthier we become.

C.Children in the UK need not take more fish.

D.A poor diet may contribute to developing asthma.

  • 24、You may be in memory of the place where you learned to ride your first bike or the door frame where your parents tracked your heights. But would that nostalgia (怀旧) be enough for you to drop half a million to buy back the house?

If you’re author J.K. Rowling and your childhood home inspired certain parts of what would become one of the most well-known fiction series to ever exist, it’s worth considering. As it turns out, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling owns her childhood home, Church Cottage at Tutshill in Chepstow, according to the Daily Mail.Rowling quietly obtained the gothic-style (哥特式) cottage when it went on the market back in 2011 for $400,000.

Now, the secret is out, as this week, Rowling and her husband applied for renovation (翻新) projects of the house, after years of no activity. The district council has granted the couple planning permission to install two windows and rebuild the garage.

Rowling lived here from ages 9 to 18, marking her territory by scrawling “Joanne Rowling slept here, about 1982”on the wall when she was 17, reports The Daily Mail.

The home includes a cupboard under the stairs, which is believed to have been the inspiration for Harry's room at the Dursley family’s house. Rowling also got the name for the Quidditch team Tutshill Tornados from the name of the house’s street.

Some wise fans were able to connect the dots leading to the home, often trying to visit it. “There are always members of the public asking to come in to see the house,” Julian Mercer, the home’s former owner, told BBC. “But we haven't let them in.”

【1】Why did Rowling buy back the cottage at a great cost?

A.Because it was a place Rowling once lived in.

B.Because it gave her inspiration of her most well-known Fiction series.

C.Because it the price of the house increased.
