  • 22、Every day, there are 25, 000 flights in America. Accidents are so rare that flying is much safer than car travel. But that doesn’t stop many people from panic when they are moving at 500 miles per hour, 33, 000 feet above the ground. Not being at the controls makes us feel a bit helpless. When the negative thoughts begin to swirl (打旋), even in a very safe place, we will suddenly feel panic.

That’s what happened recently to a woman flying on a commercial airline. Many of us can go along doing ordinary things and suddenly be overcome with fear. The physical symptoms are real, and it requires a calming force to steady our emotions. In panic mode, every sound and movement feels like a threat. The passengers responded accordingly, jumping at every sound and the slightest turbulence (骚乱).

Floyd Dean - Shannon noticed a woman’s distress. As a flight attendant, he has plenty to do during a flight. But he stopped and spoke comfortingly to the woman. Floyd calmly explained what the noise was and that it was normal. As the woman began to calm down a bit, Floyd sat down in the aisle beside her and held her hand. He told her she was safe. He made her feel safe. He sat with her through the entire flight. At one point, Floyd learned it was another passenger’s birthday, so he led the plane in a song to celebrate — another way of making the woman feel safe by distracting her from her fears. He stayed by the woman’s side until it was time to land.

We all have friends who become distressed, who over worry, who may struggle with some difficulties that keep them from enjoying life. Like Floyd, we can be open enough to see, and to be there. We don’t have to be professional counselors; we just need to be friends.

【1】Why do some people feel fearful when on a flight?

    A.They have a negative memory.

B.There are 25,000 flights at the same time.

C.There are more plane accidents than car accidents.

D.The speed and height make them feel helpless.

【2】What does the underlined word “distress” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Anger.

    B.Worry.

    C.Surprise.

    D.Sorrow.

【3】Which of the following words best describe Floyd?

    A.Brave and sympathetic.

    B.Ambitious and determined.

    C.Patient and considerate.

    D.Sensitive and modest.

【4】What is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Overcoming fear sometimes requires a patient friend

B.Why do we suddenly feel scared when flying

C.How should we deal with the sudden fear

D.Airline travel is much safer than car travel in America

  • 23、   When Chef Enrique Olvera opened his restaurant, Pujol, 13 years ago, his only goal was to have the best restaurant in the neighborhood. Olvera's budget was so small that he had to do all the things himself. But Pujol is now widely thought of as Mexico's finest restaurant and the 36th best in the world. He reached his position by making his cuisine 'fancier and fancier, and more complex' over time. Pujol now serves a tasting menu of sophisticated food that wouldn't look out of place even at New York's Momofuku Ko. To decode his rocket soar in world cuisine circus, Olvera insists on mixing elaborate, cutting-edge techniques with a strong emphasis on local ingredients to create a cosmopolitan cuisine that's at once international yet unmistakably Mexican, matching the direction of Mexico City itself.

A visit to the 48-seat Pujol reveals a space-age kitchen containing 27 cooks, with one making his fifth attempt to reshape the egg liquid and another coloring potatoes. Pujol tolerates any grotesque attempt a chef could imagine and the restaurant is the trial site for its staff. That makes Pujol a hot place to attract free labor. The chef has also thought more about bringing Mexican cooks home from the U.S. Many are returning to move past the glass ceiling that exists in America. “Despite the number of Mexicans working in U.S. restaurants, you rarely see a Mexican head chef in a New York kitchen,” said Olvera. “Then why not come back here to attract diners here for the most local but also novel dishes?”

And for foreign diners, Mexican restaurants have another wonder to offer. Just think that merely 30 dollars can sustain you for a 4-course feast in an ordinary Mexican restaurant and no one could resist the temptation. To achieve such high cost performance, Olvera states that you have to keep looking for and exploring with the simple ingredients from which to accomplish amazing dishes. “You always cherish where you come from, but there’s also the need for new sensations. Keep exploring with new ideas until you get a better dish.” After all, it’s the soul of modem cuisine.

【1】Why has Pujol become so successful?

A.Because Olvera aimed low in the first place.

B.Because Olvera forms the habit of doing things by himself.

C.Because Olvera attracts excellent cooks from the U.S.

D.Because Olvera combines cooking skills with local characteristics.

【2】The underlined word grotesque is closest in meaning to _____.

    A.forceful.

    B.weird.

    C.abstract.

    D.painful.

【3】Why would many Mexican chefs come back to the country?

A.Because Pujol provides them with high titles and salaries.

B.Because they find it hard to rise to senior positions in U.S. restaurants.

C.Because they cook Mexican food better than American food.

D.Because they refer to the high cost performance of the restaurants.

【4】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Momofuku Ko is a famous food critic.

B.Olvera relies totally on foreign cutting-edge cooking techniques.

C.Eating in ordinary Mexican restaurants is expensive.

D.One key to success in today’s restaurant business is continuous innovation.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was 11 p. m. when Alex saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing (栏杆),looking down at the rushing river below. Maybe she was fishing, Alex thought. He continued driving to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Alex was going home to get some tools before heading out to help. Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge.

Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night in May,when it was still cold in this city? As he crossed the bridge, Alex saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked his car with the hazards (警示灯) flashing, blocking one of the four lanes (车道). In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help. He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. She was crying while saying something. Alex didn’t know exactly what was going on, but he knew exactly he should do something to help.

“Hey, what’s going on?”Alex called out while approaching. The woman didn’t answer or turn around. Alex stepped closer and stood with the woman side by side.

“What’s going on?”he asked again. The woman kept silent for a while before she told Alex, but mostly talked to herself that she was going through a particularly tough period. She was jobless, not doing well in everything. In short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped. “Not everything goes as planned,” agreed Alex. He started talking about the ups and downs he’d faced in his life.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
