二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Audiences may be ready to return. Will they have anything to watch? It is turning out to be a long pause.

Cinemas across the West closed in March and, despite attempts to reopen in the summer, the box office has not recovered. From October 9th Cineworld, the world's second-largest chain, will temporarily shut its 536 Regal theaters in America and its 127 British ones. AMC, the biggest, will cut the opening hours at some Odeon cinemas in Britain.

Early in the pandemic the problem was audiences. In March Disney's "Onward" closed as people refused to breathe the air with a crowd of strangers. Business got harder when governments ordered theaters to shut.

As countries have cased (解除)restrictions and audiences prepared to return, cinemas are finding little to show them. In China, where Covid-19 seems under control, studios have resumed pumping out hits. But Hollywood will not risk premiering (首映)costly blockbusters (大片)while many markets, including New York and California, remain closed, and cinema-goers cautious. Most big titles have been postponed.

Nine months without income would be disastrous (灾难性的).America's National Association of Theatre Owners predicts that seven out of ten small or medium-sized cinema companies will go bust (破产),which it has urged Congress to approve.

Both AMC and Cineworld are likely to stop a contract or file for going bust, believes Moody's, a ratings agency; AMC could run out of cash by January. Share prices of Western operators have dropped sharply this year, and are now worth a fifth as much as five years ago. Chinese ones have done better.

【1】Which company will reduce the opening hours in Britain?

    A.Cineworld.

    B.Odeon.

    C.AMC.

    D.Hollywood.

【2】What makes the cinema business get harder?

    A.Government's restriction.

    B.Films' attraction.

    C.Audience's attitude.

    D.Operators, signing contracts.

【3】What is the situation in Hollywood?

A.They are applying for going bust.

B.They are complained by the audiences.

C.They will offer the audience more big titles.

D.They put off premiering most big blockbusters.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A.A few famous film companies.

    B.Covid-19's effect on the cinemas.

    C.The global economic situation.

    D.Audience's desiring for films.

  • 22、While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we all take for granted-being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of hot steaming pizza. Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution to the third one, thanks to this cool 3-D pizza printer!

About a year ago, NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor, a 3-D technology expert, to build a device(设备)that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza made in common ovens.

Late last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype(原型)that begins by creating a single slice of dough(面团)that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato “sauce” —a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and finally, a protein slice that resembles cheese. While the video doesn’t show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed, it can be ready to be consumed in 7 seconds.

While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover, Anjan Contractor is far from ready for astronauts. That’s because he still has to find a solution to make the food container in the printer last for 30 years. Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not.

Anjan Contractor believes that the only way that is possible is that the water is removed from all the ingredients(配料)and then they are reduced to the powder form. This, as you can imagine, will not be so easy. But, while the printer may not be ready for space, it certainly looks ready enough for people on earth. Hopefully, NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars!

【1】Why does the author mention the things that astronauts in space cannot do?

A.To ask us not to take common things for granted.

B.To show they live a difficult life there.

C.To show their life is boring in space.

D.To introduce the topic of the text.

【2】NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor mainly to __________.

A.create some new type of 3-D printer

B.attract more companies to work for NASA

C.help astronauts in space enjoy fresh pizza one day

D.produce pizza in large quantities to earn great profits

【3】The biggest challenge that Anjan Contractor is faced with now is probably that __________.

A.he has no money left to go on with his research

B.the pizza doesn’t seem appetizing to pizza lovers

C.he has no way to make pizza that can last for thirty years

D.he cannot make the food container last for decades

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A.NASA is trying its best to help astronauts eat better

B.Astronauts may soon be able to enjoy steaming hot pizza

C.NASA is working on making pizza for common people

D.A 3-D pizza printer has been used to make pizza

  • 23、During the outbreak of novel coronavirus, cities are locked down and borders are closed. Science, on the contrary, is becoming more open. And this “open science” is already making a difference.

Soon after the epidemic started in China, a research team from Fudan University in Shanghai successfully sequenced(测定序列)the DNA of the virus. But they didn’t keep the information to themselves. Instead, they placed the sequences on GenBank, an open-access data platform, so researchers around the world could download them for free and start studying the virus.

Due to this openness, pharmaceutical(制药的)companies across the globe are now able to work simultaneously to develop a vaccine. “There may be room for multiple different vaccines for different purposes and different age groups,”Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security in the US, told Al Jazeera.“The bigger menu we have of vaccines, the more resilient(有适应力的)well be against coronavirus outbreaks in the future. ”

Major drug companies around the world are also sharing their study results. Remdesivir, a drug originally developed by US company Gilead Sciences to treat Ebola, s found to be promising in fighting against the novel coronavirus. Currently, two trials of the drug are already underway in China, and the results might be available as soon as April, according to The Verge.

This openness in science is going to be even more crucial in the future. With climate change, increasing globalization, and population shifts, epidemics will not go away, and might even become more frequent, Dan Barouch, a Harvard Medical School professor, told Harvard Magazine.

He said, “No one group can do everything. It has to be a coordinated(合作的)approach. But I do think that the world has a greater sense of readiness this time to develop knowledge, drugs, and therapeutics(疗法)very rapidly.

Every epidemic is indeed a crisis, but it can also be a learning opportunity. One redeeming(补偿的)factor of the COVID﹣19 outbreak is that it is helping science adapt for the better.

【1】What does the article mainly talk about?

A.Coordinated efforts to fight the epidemic.

B.The significance of openness and sharing of scientific knowledge.

C.Something positive we’ve learned from the epidemic.

D.What needs to be done to prevent future epidemics.

【2】What is the positive effect of the research team from Fudan University placing the genetic sequence of the virus onto GenBank?

A.They alerted the world to the danger of the virus.

B.They helped remove people’s fear of the virus.

C.They invited collective efforts worldwide to develop a vaccine.

D.They showed the world how to produce a vaccine.

【3】What does the underlined phrase“work simultaneously” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.work at the same time.

    B.work effectively

    C.work continuously

    D.work happily

【4】What is the author’s purpose of mentioning remdesivir in the text?

A.To introduce a possible cure for the epidemic.

B.To prove that many drug companies readily share their discoveries.

C.To compare the treatment of Ebola and the novel coronavirus.

D.To show that the novel coronavirus will soon be contained.

【5】Which of the following would Dan Barouch probably disagree with?

A.The increase in globalization may worsen future epidemics.

B.Epidemics will be less frequent thanks to scientific development.

C.No single group can fight against the epidemics independently.

D.The world is becoming better prepared to deal with epidemics.
