21、 Upright farming is a hugely promising agricultural technique that aims to produce more food to meet the growing population on our limited planet. Techniques include growing in vertical frames (垂向框架) or even in high-rise farms while moving farms into urban areas, and producing nutritious crops without topsoil.
Vertical farmers plant crops in nutrient-rich water, so plants can be raised without soil. They also grow plants using water from fish tanks, or using nutrient water mist systems that reduce water use by more than 90 per cent, which was a technique developed by NASA as a way for astronauts to grow in space and feed themselves without soil while preserving precious water supplies. All of these soil-less growing techniques use less or no chemicals, and recycle water with less waste. Plants can be sown and harvested year-round, free from bad weather conditions such as drought or flooding.
“This is the farming of the future," said Paul Myers, co-founder of vertical farming enterprise Farm Urban. "Chemical-free and moving from the traditional horse and tractor agriculture that is steadily destroying the planet to a more sustainable approach."
The global vertical farming market is expected to be six times bigger in 2026 than it is today. This is fueled in part by rising demand for organic, chemical-free foods, but also by countries looking to increase their food security and cut down on imports — the UK for example uses more than 70 per cent of its land mass for agriculture but imports more than half of its food.
As the vertical farming industry expands, it is worth noting that it has limitations — it only works for some crops, and urban locations can be expensive.

Growing up in San Francisco, Grace Young used to watch her father shop daily in Chinatown for whatever he needed to make traditional Chinese meals at home. As an award-winning cookbook author, Ms. Young, now 66, has spent decades shopping the same way in New York’s Chinatown.
Ms. Young developed a passion for cooking at an early age. At 13, she started to sit in on cooking classes. After college, Ms. Young moved to New York and worked in a book-packaging company. In her 30s, she realized that while she had helped create more than 40 cookbooks, she didn’t know how to make the dishes that tasted of home. “I knew if I recorded all of my parents’ recipes, it would be a great gift that I could give my family and the next generation.” she says.
Yet what began as a recipe book became a kind of memoir. Talking about food encouraged her parents to finally open up about their past, like the fact that her father had owned a Chinatown restaurant in the 1940s. “It was really an amazing way to learn not only my family’s recipes, but also my family’s story. “she says. The Wisdom of the Chinese Kitchen (1999) launched Ms. Young’s work in preserving and sustaining Chinese culinary (烹饪的)traditions.
Ms. Young has also devoted herself to supporting the restaurants in Chinatown. Since early 2020, Ms. Young has raised money to buy meals from Chinatown restaurants and deliver them to those in need. This year, instead of cooking at home for her husband and friends, she celebrated the Chinese New Year with various dishes from local restaurants in Chinatown. “If these restaurants don’t survive, Chinese culinary traditions in our city won’t survive.” she says.

23、New words emerge in English all the time. In fact, in recent years more new words and phrases are entering the language than ever before, partly due to the increased willingness of lexicographers (词典编纂者) to include them in the dictionaries.
John Algeo who studies the history of language says, “As our culture changes, the language changes. American culture is going through a time of rapid change.”
Technology is moving fast, which has a big effect on language. The computer world produces hundreds of new words. New terms also come from business, medicine, and other fields.
Many new English words come from other languages. David Jost helps create the American Heritage Dictionary. “We constantly borrow words from other cultures,” he says. “This will go on forever in cultures.”
“People in many parts of the world speak English now. That is another reason why so many new words are entering the language,” says Algeo.
The American Dialect Society has a contest each year. The society selects a “new word of the year”, which gains high level of popularity on media for some days. Last year the winner was “information superhighway”, referring to a whole set of electronic network of information and people getting access to this network by computer.
New words often come in several forms, such as the back-formation (like enthuse from enthusiasm), the clipping (like zoo from zoological garden), and the compounding, etc. Over time, one form tends to win out. Take the compounding for instance. “Domestic partners” has been growing popular lately, even though many terms have been used to describe couples who live together but are not married.
“A new word rarely can be traced to one source,” says Algeo. “Several people fend to create a new word when a need for one exists.”
“Most new words have a limited life ‘span’,” say language experts. Only a few will survive through the next 100 years.
【1】What might have least effect on English language?
A.Culture.
B.Technology.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

24、The library is one of the most popular places at a western university. Students turn to it for research, conversations about class, and many other services.
Compared with Chinese libraries, college libraries, college libraries in the US and UK tend to offer more resources. A postgraduate at Yale University can borrow as many as 225 books at a time.
In addition to borrowing books, there are online and electronic resources. These include a database search of popular and academic material, such as LexisNexis Academic, which offer items from newspapers and magazines.
Although books and articles are the items that students ask for most frequently, some libraries provide audio and video recordings, maps and sheet music(活页乐谱). At some schools, teachers and tutors put electronic copies of their teaching PPTs on the library Web to give easier access for students.
Another useful service in Western college libraries is the Interlibrary Loan. This allows a student at one school to borrow books from another school. The loan request is made through the student’s college library, which gets the book, gives it to the user, and arranges for its return.
Technology has brought more services to students and has made libraries attractive. Some universities have services for students to send messages through the computer or mobile texts to ask the library staff for information.
Earlier this year, Harvard University introduced a new Scan and Deliver service, allowing students to make requests for parts of books and articles. Requests made through the system are handled by library staff. The student receives and e-mail with an Internet link to the scanned pages. The service is free and all material comes within four days.
It used to be that libraries didn’t allow food or drinks. But that rule is changing and many of them now contain a cafe so students can spend as much time as they want in the library.
Actually, some US university libraries are now all-night affairs, or have at least one study room open all night.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Luke was a 12-year-old boy. He was flying alone to meet his parents in Maroochydore for his summer vacation. He wanted to go to the toilet, so he stood up and walked along the aisle.
A little girl was waiting outside the toilet already. Luke could see that she had been crying.
“What’s your name?” he asked her.
“Cathy,” said the little girl, starting to cry again. She told Luke that her father was taking her to America without telling her mum and that she didn’t want to leave her mum.
Luke’s eyes opened wide. “You mean your dad is kidnapping (绑架) you?” he gasped. Cathy nodded, still sobbing.
At that moment the toilet door opened and the flight attendant came out. She saw the tears on Cathy’s face. With a stern look, she warned Luke to stop bullying the little girl and stay away from her. Cathy didn’t know what to do. She put her thumb into her mouth and then ran into the toilet.
Luke was sad, dragging his feet back to his seat. How could he tell someone what was happening? Cathy’s father was sitting just across the aisle. He could hear every word. Suddenly Luke had a brainwave! He secretly wrote a note and pressed the call button. The attendant came and read the note quickly. “That’s not a very good joke.” She dropped the note into her pocket and walked away.
A sharp look from Cathy’s father warned Luke that he had known his “trick”. Luke slumped back in his seat. He felt that everyone in the plane was angry with him. How could he tell someone what was happening?
Soon, the plane landed. Luke could see Cathy’s father striding down the walkway towards an escalator (自动扶梯). Cathy was trying to pull away, and crying, but her father picked her up and started running up the stairs. Luke spotted a policeman at the exit, but it was quite a distance.
