  • 22、   At a time when industries are under greater pressure to reduce costs and increase efficiencies, more production facilities are turning to digital sensing technology to provide the real-time insights they need for improved performance. What if one digital sensor could measure multiple signals?

Yokogawa's DPharp(差压传送器)digital technology has the unique ability to measure two pressure parameters (参数),delivering reliable and accurate measurement of plant operations. The unique aspect of this digital technology is that it measures two parameters in one sensor module, providing additional insight into a plant's operations. It is the only sensor in the world that does this.

DPharp transmitters(发射器)use silicon(硅)resonant(谐振的)sensor technology to measure both differential(差别) and still pressure. The sensor consists of two H-shaped crystal silicon resonators that shake at a certain frequency and, when pressure is applied, the frequency of one resonator increases while the other decreases. By monitoring these frequencies digitally, both differential and still pressure can be measured at the same time. The frequency output is directly read by the central processing unit of the transmitter.

DPharp can be used in any processing plant across any industry—oil and gas to food and drinks. DPharp's unique digital sensing technology allows engineering firms and plant engineers to create designs that will equate to an average reduction of 40 percent. Where they would typically use five measuring devices, they are using three by using the multi-sensing technology. That is a significant cost reduction in the number of devices installed and the added benefit is that, as there are less devices, the engineering and design is less complex, which means less materials and less equipment to maintain. Furthermore, there are fewer transmitter spares required, which reduces costs. Tony Farah, Product Manager, said that more organisations are seeing the significant benefits of smart devices like DPharp.

1What is special about DPharp digital technology?

    A.It provides the real-time insights.

B.It brings significant changes in engineering.

C.It measures two parameters in one sensor.

    D.It provides accurate measurement.

2What is the frequency output read by?

    A.Two H-shaped crystal silicon resonators.

B.The central processing unit of the transmitter.

    C.Monitoring devices.

    D.The operator of the plant.

3What is the plants' attitude to DPharp?

    A.Cautious. B.Ambiguous.

    C.Favorable. D.Disapproving.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.How DPharp is bringing value across production plants.

B.How sensor works in a different way.

C.Why DPharp is efficient and reliable.

    D.Where DPharp can be used.

  • 23、Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) may soon be able to turn their used forks and knives into tools and satellite parts.

Tethers Unlimited Inc., an aerospace technology company, has developed a system that combines a waste recycling machine with a 3D printer.

Astronauts will put waste items made of plastic into the recycling machine, called the Poistrusion Recycler. When they press a button, the Recycler will melt down the plastic and turn it into 3D filament (长丝).

The filament will e used in a 3D printer on the ISS-called the Refabricator-to make tools, spare parts and satellite components.

The waste will come from packaging materials, food containers, trays and eating utensils (器具) used on the ISS. Astronaut currently use disposable wet wipes to clean their food containers and utensils. The used wipes are stored as trash (垃圾), and replacement wipes must be sent up to the ISS on cargo missions.

By recycling old food containers and utensils, astronauts will reduce the amount of trash they produce. To get rid of trash from the ISS, astronaut load it into empty cargo capsules (航天舱) and release it into space. The capsules burn up when they enter Earth’s atmosphere.

Turning trash into useful new items will also help NASA save money because astronauts will need fewer supplies. It costs about $ 6,000 for every kilogram launched into orbit. These benefits will be even more important for longer missions in the future-such as the two-year journey to Mars. Astronauts will be able to recycle old waste materials into new tools and parts as they need them.

Tethers have successfully tested the systems in its laboratory. They will test it on the ISS in late 2018. The company is also developing a version of the system for use here on Earth.

1What material are the forks and knives for astronauts made of?

    A. Gold.   B. Iron

    C. Plastic.   D. Wood.

2At present, the astronauts mainly get supplies by   .

    A. 3D printers   B. reusing the old ones

    C. collecting from the space   D. the capsules launched from the earth

3What can the new technology help the astronauts do?

    A. Reuse the trash.

    B. Send the trash to Mars.

    C. Take the trash to the earth.

    D. Load the trash into empty capsules and throw it away.

4What is the biggest benefit of the new technology mentioned in the text?

    A. It can save some space for the ISS.

    B. It can gave more time for the astronauts.

    C. It can provide more conditions to explore space.

    D. It can help to reduce the journey from Earth to Mars.

  • 24、   On the summer of 1995, a second-year graduate student named Sergey Brin was giving a tour of Stanford University to prospective students. Larry Page, an engineering graduate from the University of Michigan, was one of those being shown around the campus.

“We both found each other obnoxious and annoying with strong opinions about things,” said Brin. “But we said it a little bit jokingly. Obviously, we spent a lot of time talking to each other, so there was something there.”

The technology of the web at the time meant that people could tell where a webpage linked to just by reading its code. However, to get a complete list of every page to which it linked, they needed to check every other website on the Internet.

Page’s “BackRub” project aimed to qualify these backlinks (反向链接). It was a complex task that not only demanded vast computing resources, but also required extremely complex mathematics, which was where the math genius Brin came in.

Later, Page and Brin came up with the PageRank algorithm - a ranking system which would prove to be a breakthrough idea. And then, BackRub became Google, a play on the term “googol,” meaning “10100.” The system successfully enabled users to search all 24 million pages stored in its database.

On September 15, 1997, Google.com was registered. In August 1998, it got its first funding in the form of a check for $100,000 written by Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, to “Google Inc.” But still there were troubles. Later that month, Page and Brin moved into the garage (车库) of friend Susan Wojcicki (now the CEO of YouTube), and received further investment from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, among others.

Early in 1999, Page and Brin attempted to sell Google to Excite, at the time the No. 2 search engine behind Yahoo, for one million dollars. However, even after the pair had been talked down to $750,000, Excite CEO George Bell rejected them. With no buyer in sight, Google started hiring engineers and moved to an office in California in March 1999. In 2001, Eric Schmidt was hired first as chairman and then CEO, leaving Page and Brin to continue developing Google’s products and technologies respectively. By the end of its first decade, Google had effectively won the search engine wars.

1According to the article, what can we learn about Larry Page and Sergey Brin?

A.They first met each other when studying at Stanford.

B.They found their first encounter rather unpleasant.

C.They had no intention of running a business initially.

D.They got financial support from Stanford to work on the ranking system.

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen in a while. There had been some talk of COVID-19 (新型冠状病毒)on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in our group felt perfectly fine, we took precautions(预防):We washed our hands with soap , did not share food and had no significantly close contact.

A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptoms(症状)for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning. I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.

At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located five minutes' drive from my house. The result made my heart sank — I was also tested positive, and the local hospital wasn't equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay at home and quarantine (隔离)myself.

Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. With my developed symptoms , I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.
