二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A person, like a commodity (商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration, however, does no harm when it shows the person’s unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment(装饰), so that the person so packaged is not a commodity but a human being, lively and lovely.

A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted by God. Any attempt to make up would be self - defeating. Youth, however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle - aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self - confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self - satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing. The snow - capped mountain is itself a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony (和谐)with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the elder’s company is like reading a thick book of deluxe (better quality)edition that attracts one so much as to be unwilling to part with.

As long as one find where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.

【1】It can be concluded from the text that ________.

    A. people should be packed at all ages

    B. people should be packed in a special way

    C. elderly people also care about packing

    D. proper packing makes people attractive

    2For the middle - aged, attractiveness________ .

    A. hardly exists B. is the strongest

    C. comes from the inside D. comes from the appearance

3The underlined sentence means that elderly people ________.

    A. are usually packed like a finely - made book

    B. experience a lot and have rich knowledge of life

    C. do a lot of traveling and can give you much information

    D. enjoy reading thick books of beautiful nature and fairylands

  • 22、   This may sound like a joke about a lazy person’s dream job. Earn big money by staying in bed and watching TV. But this is really happening, and it’s a project of NASA and two European space agencies the Institute of Aerospace Medicine at the Cologne-based German Aerospace Center and the European Space Agency. I’s called Artificial Gravity Bed Rest Study, aimed at studying how the body adapts to weightlessness in space.

Scientists are seeking 12 women to spend two full months in bed in the fall at a German lab, plus an additional month there for preparation and recovery, The first 12 test subjects, all men, already have started the study.

Participants spend two entire months in bed and remain lying down even to do everyday things like eating, drinking and exercising. They also answer nature’s call and shower, but it’s unclear from the NASA website how those tasks are accomplished in bed.

“Daily routine showering, getting dressed, eating, exercising takes much time when you cannot stand up to do them,” says the website, adding that there is “continuous data collection”, including blood pressure, heart rate, nutrient absorption and also the participants’ feelings. Study subjects will spend the 60 days with their heads tiled down six degrees, which imitates conditions in space.

Participants are encouraged to pass the time by watching TV, taking online courses, reading and any other activities they can perform while lying down alone in bed to relieve what could be boredom. Family and friends are allowed to visit.

The high $ 18,500 payment for two months of lazing about is probably a major motivation for people willing to go through something this extreme. However, if you’re an American who really needs the money, you probably can’t afford it. Candidates need to travel to Cologne four times at their own expense for the employment process between April and July. Plus, they need strong German-speaking skills Also participants need to be nonsmokers between ages 24 and 55, in good health, with normal body weight.

1What are participants expected to do during the study?

A.Report their feelings regularly. B.Complete their daily routines in bed.

C.Keep their bodies tilted down six degrees. D.Record their physical responses every day.

2What data about the participants will the researchers collect?

A.The changes in their weight. B.Their behaviors to weightlessness.

C.The ways they do their daily things D.Their physical and mental reactions

3What will be a challenge for the participants?

A.The language skills they need. B.The difficulty meeting family.

C.The possibility that they feel dull. D.The slow discovery of their health.

4The requirements for potential participants are__________.

A.challenging for Americans B.tailored to thin persons

C.easy for the youth to satisfy D.suitable for most people

  • 23、   I was seven when I first questioned my imagination. I remember watching the first Harry Potter film and my friend was complaining that the characters weren't how she imagined them to be. I couldn't understand what she meant because, in my mind, they had never been images at all, just concepts. When l shut my eyes, I see nothing. I have no visual imagination.

I thought everyone's minds worked this way until about two years ago, when I came across a text about aphantasia, a condition where you lack a functioning mind's eye. I was 23, and it blew my mind to learn that others could visualize things. It was clear I had aphantasia, too, and a lot of things started to make more sense. For me, imagination had always been impossible. If someone asked me to close my eyes and picture myself by the sea, I would see nothing.

I am currently studying for a PhD in biology at college. A good little test for me is drawing. I can copy things almost like for like if they are in front of me, but if I were to draw from my imagination it would look terrible. It doesn't mean you cannot be creative; you just have to adapt. Regardless of how many times I read a technique, it didn't make sense. But when I came to do it in the lab, I understood it immediately. If you have a visual imagination, you can look at a diagram and it triggers your memory; but I learn by repetition or physically doing something.

I'd love to experience life with a mind's eye. I think it'd be cool and beneficial to imagine things so vividly. If you offered me a day with a visual imagination, I'd be excited. I think it'd be so brilliant that I wouldn't want to give it back.

1After watching the first Harry Potter film, the author ______.

    A.misunderstood what her friend said

B.became a huge fan of the Harry Potter film

C.found it impossible to picture its characters in her mind

D.complained its characters different from what she imagined

A.Her friend told her the fact.

    B.She read about aphantasia.

    C.She had a medical examination.

D.Her life experience made it clear.

3What can we learn about the author?

    A.She lacks creativity.

    B.She always draws terribly.

    C.She learns by hands-on practice.

    D.She gets benefit from techniques.

4What is the author's attitude towards her disability?

    A.Uncertain. B.Uncaring. C.Upset. D.Positive.

  • 24、What would you think if someone suggested pulling down Big Ben to make way for a car park? It would be ridiculous, right? But when it comes to devastation (毁灭) of the natural world, we aren’t so easily shocked. But we should be...or we’ll be in a lot of trouble.

Nature is shrinking by the day. Ancient forests are destroyed. Wetlands are becoming dry. Woodland is disappearing. And all in the name of progress. This is bad in itself, but it’s devastating for biodiversity.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of plants, animals and other living things which are all inter-connected. The ecological services provided by biodiversity are vital to everyday life. The air we breathe is a product of photosynthesis (光合作用) by green plants. In fact, all life on earth exists thanks to the benefit of biodiversity. More than 90 percent of the calories consumed by people worldwide are produced from 80 plant species. And 30 percent of medicines are developed from plants and animals. Maintaining a wide diversity of species in each ecosystem is necessary to preserve all living things.

The loss of biodiversity could be devastating. “It is wrong to think that biodiversity can be reduced indefinitely without threatening humans,” said Harvard University biologist Edward O. Wilson, known as “the father of biodiversity”. He warned, “we are about to reach a critical point beyond which biodiversity loss will be unavoidable.”

But what can we do? The problem is that the concept of biodiversity is so vague. People might care about giant pandas, but it is much harder to excite them about the fate of tiny sea creatures which are being boiled to death in the cooling systems of power stations along coastlines. The Guardian newspaper is trying to help. It has started the Biodiversity 100 campaign to try to convince governments around the world to take action to deal with the widespread concerns about biodiversity. This includes persuading the UK government to create a series of marine reserves to reverse the decline in sea-life caused by industrial fishing, banning the fishing sharks by the Japanese fishermen and stopping the killing of dingoes in Australia, among many other things.

There is a lot to do. And we’d better get a move on if we don’t want to end up with a planet that can’t support life!

【1】What does the author want to tell us by the comparison in paragraph 1?

A.It is unreasonable to pull down Big Ben.

B.People take devastation of nature for granted.

C.The differences between Big Ben and nature.

D.The great trouble we have been faced with.

【2】What can we infer from Edward O. Wilson’s words?

A.It doesn’t matter to reduce biodiversity.

B.People have done enough to preserve biodiversity.

C.The situation of biodiversity is very serious.

    D.Biodiversity loss has become unavoidable.

【3】What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.The UK government.

    B.The concept of biodiversity.

C.The action to deal with problem.

    D.The Guardian newspaper.

【4】Which of the following can be the suitable title for the text?
