二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Have you ever had a staring contest? It can be difficult to keep your eyes open for long periods of time because of the natural tendency to blink. But why do we need to blink?

There are two main reasons. First, blinking clears away dust from the eyes. 【1】 It might be under the eyelid or something that blew in.

Second, blinking lubricates (润滑) the eye-balls. The eyes need a smooth surface for light to properly focus on, so vision becomes clear. Blinking releases a tear film-which mostly consists of water , oil and mucus-to keep the surface of the eyeball smooth. 【2】 The tear film also supplies oxygen to the eye. The film also helps prevent the eye from becoming infected.

Blinking happens naturally. It takes the average person 400 milliseconds to blink. Most people blink somewhere between 10 and 20 times per minute, usually around 15 or 16 times. 【3】

For example, you may blink more frequently if there’s something in your eye. Certain conditions can make it feel like there’s something in your eye, which makes you blink more.

Some people have habitual involuntary movements that lead them to blink frequently. 【4】If you have uncorrected vision problems, you may blink more often because your eyes are naturally trying to correct the unclear vision.

If there is damage to the facial nerve, which is responsible for closing the eyelid, a person may blink more slowly or less often. Tiredness and some medications can cause a similar effect. 【5】 For example, when reading, people tend to blink at the end of a sentence rather than in the middle.

A.It also prevents the eye from drying out.

B.If there’s a foreign body, it helps get rid of it.

C.And stress and anxiety can make you blink more, too.

D.Blinking more often than needed can give brain extra stress.

E.Pink eye and other types of infection can also cause damage on eyes.

F.However, there are some circumstances that make people blink more or less often.

G.Focusing on something like watching a movie, you may blink less to strengthen your focus.

  • 22、Chinese female scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in medicine on October 5 for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria(疟疾). This is the first Nobel Prize given to a Chinese scientist for work carried out within China.

Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan, who were honored for their revolutionary anti-roundworm treatment. 84-year-old Tu is awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria, reducing patients’ suffering and promoting mankind’s health. Although she received several medical awards in the past, the 2015 Nobel Prize is definitely the most privilege reward that recognizes Tu’s dedication and perseverance in discovering artemisinin(青蒿素), the key drug that battles malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫).

However, her route to the honor has been anything but traditional. She won the Nobel Prize for medicine, but she doesn’t have a medical degree or a PhD. In China, she is even being called the “three-noes” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas. No wonder her success has stirred China’s national pride and helped promote confidence of native Chinese scientists.

The fact that Tu has none of these three backgrounds reminds us that science should be more accessible to all. One shall be able to become a scientist no matter what kind of background he or she comes from, as long as one dives into scientific research. There have been discussions on people who really love science but are never able to achieve much during their whole life. Their contributions can never be ignored. They work so hard to prove the wrong way so that the future researchers will be closer to the right one.

As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tu’s record-breaking winning also serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. Tu spent decades on scientific research before its value is officially acknowledged. There is no way to measure how much one devotes to science and compare it with how much reward he or she may get.

【1It can be concluded from the text that __________.

    A. Tu worked home and abroad to conduct her research

    B. Tu got the Nobel Prize for her anti-roundworm treatment

    C. The Nobel Prize is the first award to recognize her work

    D. Her discovery of artemisinin has helped to cut Malaria death rate

【2The author seems to agree that a person who is more likely to become a scientist is the one with__________.

    A. a sense of national pride

    B. relevant academic knowledge

    C. enthusiasm for scientific research

    D. a desire to achieve success

【3In writing the passage, the author intends to ___________.

    A. remind readers of the principles of scientific research

    B. discourage the pursuit of instant success in science

    C. inform readers of the news and make comments

    D. praise the award winner and encourage scientific research

Pesticides might just be a bee's worst enemy. They harm their brains, slow down their reproduction, and even kill their buzz. Now it seems they damage their social lives and reduce their ability to care for their young.

While previous studies have shown that commonly used neonicotinoid(新烟碱类)pesticides make bees sick and affect how they search for food and navigate, a new study gives more of an idea of how these chemicals affect the internal workings of a colony(种群). Studying these effects has proved difficult, so the team employed a new technique. They stuck tiny QR codes to the backs of humblebees and tracked their movements using a robotic camera.

The researchers looked at 12 colonies housed in a lab, giving some the same level of imidacloprid—the world's most commonly used pesticide—that they'd be exposed to in the wild while keeping others pesticide-free as controls. They checked on them for a few minutes 12 times a day. The findings are published in the journal Science.

Unfortunately, the researchers found a number of obvious differences between the bees exposed to the pesticide and the controls. The bees given neonicotinoids spent less time interacting with other bees and more time resting. This pause in activity tended to happen more at night, but the researchers aren't sure why.

"Bees actually have a very strong circadian rhythm(生理节奏)," lead author James Crall explained in a statement. "So what we found was that, during the day, there was no statistically observable effect, but at night, we could see that they were crashing. We don't know yet whether the pesticides are destroying circadian gene regulation or if this is just some, maybe physiological feedback…But it suggests that, just from a practical perspective, if we want to understand or study these compounds, looking at effects overnight matters a lot."

1What does the new study suggest about pesticides' effect on bees?

    A.Pesticides lead to their disease.

B.Pesticides slow down their brain function

    C.Pesticides upset their community.

    D.Pesticides damage bees' internal parts.

2What does the underlined word "controls" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.The tools used to observe the bees.

B.The data recorded by the robotic camera

    C.The researchers conducting the experiments.

D.The bees kept free from the pesticides.

3What can be concluded from the last paragraph?

A.The circadian rhythm of bees is stronger during the day.

B.It is vital to study the performance of bees at night

C.It is certain that pesticides affect bees only at night.

D.The pesticides do great harm to circadian gene regulation of bees.

4What's the purpose of the passage?

A.To inform people of the worrying effects of pesticides.

B.To check the best time to observe experimental results.

C.To call for the toughest ban on the chemicals.

D.To recommend measures to improve the quality of pesticides.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My family lived in a tiny apartment in Hoboken, New Jersey. Every December my mom spread the word to anyone alone on Christmas Eve that she would be having an open house. My mom believed that no one should be alone during the holidays. If she could, she probably would have put an advertisement in the paper inviting the world.

As it was, our tiny apartment was stuffed, every room but my bedroom filled with partying adults on Christmas Eve. Sleep was impossible, but I tried to fall asleep anyway because Santa would not leave gifts for children who were awake. As I lay in bed, I wondered how Santa would even know I was asleep amid all the laughter and how he could sneak in and leave gifts with all those people around.

The Christmas Eve Open-House tradition continued. When I was 8 years old, we moved to the suburb, where we got to live in a lovely, one-bedroom apartment. That first Christmas there, my mom invited anyone she met who she learned would be alone on Christmas Eve一neighbors, co-workers, shop girls, the postman...the list went on.

The next year, a new neighbor moved in next door. His name was George, and he was an older gentleman. He always nodded a greeting when he saw us. It was around Thanksgiving when we saw him park in his space near ours. We were bringing in groceries, and my mom asked him if he had plans for the.holiday. When he said no, and he would spend it alone, my mom mentioned her open house on Christmas Eve.

“Please join us,” I said. He was already shaking his head no.

“But mom’s apple pie is really inviting.”

“I won’t be good company, I’m afraid,” he said. “I lost my wife a few months ago.” His eyes were fill with tears and he turned away. “Thank you anyway!” he called. He went into his apartment and quickly closed the door.
