  • 21、Air pollution may be causing baldness, scientists have shown for the first time. A new study found that fine particulate matter emitted by cars would damage the skin that holds hair follicles(毛囊) in place. A series of laboratory tests on human cells showed that levels of the crucial proteins needed for hair to grow and be retained decreased when they were exposed to pollution particles. While there is a growing body of evidence showing how these tiny particles can damage internal health, including by entering the bloodstream through the lungs, this is the first to demonstrate such a risk to the surface of the body.

The study was conducted by exposing cells from the human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) to various concentrations of PM10-like dust and diesel particles. After 24 hours the researchers performed a process, known as western blotting, to detect the levels of specific proteins in the cells.

The results showed that the presence of PM10 and diesel particles decreased levels of B-catenin, the protein responsible for hair growth. The study also revealed that the levels of three other proteins---cyclin D1, cyclin E and CDK2, which are responsible for hair growth and hair retention, were decreased by PM10-like dust and diesel particles in a “dose-dependent” manner.

Dr Hyuk Chul Kwon, who led the study at the Future Science Research Centre, said, “While the link between air pollution and serious diseases such as cancer and lung diseases is well established, there is little-to-no research on the effect of particulate matter exposure on the human skin and hair in particular. Our research explains the mode of action of air pollutants on HFDPCs, showing how the most common air pollutants lead to hair loss.”

Sources of PM include the burning of fossil fuels---petrol and diesel, as well as other solid fuels, and other industrial activities such as building, mining and the manufacturing of building materials like bricks.

“While it is difficult to escape from the surrounding pollution, limiting the time for walking in busy streets, especially during rush hours, should help reduce exposure,” said Dr Kwon. “If you are exercising outdoors, try to do so in areas that are less polluted and do not spend too much time waiting at traffic hot spots such as traffic lights.”

【1】What did the new study find?

A.Air pollution can do great harm to our lungs.

B.The color of our skin can be influenced by air pollution.

C.Serious air pollution can probably prevent hair from growing.

D.Air pollution can affect hair growth by entering the bloodstream.

【2】What is western blotting used to do?

A.To discover the protein helpful for hair growth.

B.To show the protein content in the cells.

C.To compare different proteins in the cells.

D.To analyze the composition of hair cells.

【3】What can we learn from Dr Hyuk Chul Kwon’s words?

A.His new research is superior to previous research.

B.The research he conducted is really of great importance.

C.The results of his new research need to be further improved.

D.A link between air pollution and diseases needs to be established.

  • 22、A tiny Alaska village has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.

More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaska village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat (栖息地) of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.

Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in the mid1990s. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight (困境) of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.

The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011, said Jennifer Reed, of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Today we’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year,” Reed said. Most tourists visit in the fall, when bears are forced toward land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife viewing tours, said he's been offering polar bear tours since 2004. Most of his clients (客户) are from China and Europe, as well as from the lower 48 U. S. states. Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.

【1】What causes more polar bears to stay on land in Kaktovik?

    A.Food shortage.

    B.Climate change.

    C.Habitats’ movement to shore.

    D.Their preference for land.

【2】How did common people feel about more sight of bears on land?

    A.Excited.

    B.Puzzled.

    C.Concerned.

    D.Shocked.

【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Hotels in Kaktovik are in demand in autumn.

B.Kaktovik has about 50 visitors annually.

C.Inglangasak makes a living as a tour guide.

D.Tourism affects the balance of nature.

【4】Which saying can describe the text?

    A.The fittest can survive.

    B.After a storm comes a calm.

    C.One man’s fault is another man’s lesson.

    D.Every coin has two sides.

  • 24、   Many people say they wouldn't cheat on a test, lie on a job application or refuse to help a person in need. But what if you have to face the test answers and cheating didn't require any work on your part? If you didn't have to face the person who needed your help and refuse them? Would that change your behavior?

New research shows it might. In two studies that tested participants' willingness to behave immorally, the research team discovered people will behave badly if it doesn't involve too much work on their part.

In one study, participants took a math test on a computer after being warned there were problems in the system. One group was told if they pressed the space bar, the answer to the question would appear on the screen. The second group was told if they didn't press the enter key within five seconds, the answer would appear. "People in the second group those who didn't have to physically press a button to get the answerswere much more likely to cheat," says Associate Psychology Professor Michael Inzlicht, second author on the study.

In another study, the team asked participants whether they would volunteer to help a student with a learning disability complete a component of the test. One group of participants had only the freedom to check a 'yes' or 'no' box on the computer. The second group of people could follow a link at the bottom of the page to volunteer their help or simply press 'continue' to move on to the next page of their test. Participants were five times more likely to volunteer when they had to pick either 'yes' or 'no.'

"When people are faced with actively doing the right thing or the wrong thing, there are a lot of emotions involvedsuch as guilt and shamethat guide them to make the moral choice. When the transgression is more passive, however, we saw more people doing the wrong thing, and we believe this is because the moral emotions in such situations are probably less serious." Teper says.

"Forcing people to make an active, moral decision is going to be much more effective than allowing them to passively skip over a request," he says.

1What is the new research mainly about?

A.People behave badly if not required too much on their part.

B.Most of the tested participants wouldn’t cheat or tell lies.

C.It’s too difficult to behave badly for people.

D.People are unwilling to behave immorally.

2The underlined word “immorally” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by _________.

    A.positively B.badly C.indifferently D.cautiously

3In the first study, people in Group 2 were much more likely to cheat because ______.

A.They were asked to do so. B.It doesn’t involve too much work on their part.

C.They can get fun from it. D.It’s typical of them to cheat.

4What should we do to guide people to make moral choice?

A.Allow them to passively skip over the request. B.Make them feel guilty to avoid bad behavior.

C.Force them to make a moral decision. D.Try to involve as many as emotions.
