21、Little New Year (Chinese: Xiaonian), usually a week before the lunar New Year, falls on Feb 8 this year. It is also known as the Festival of the Kitchen God, the deity(神) who oversees the moral character of each household. Here are six things you should know about the Little New Year, another sign of the start of spring.
1. Offer sacrifices to Kitchen God
One of the most distinctive traditions of the Little New Year is the burning of a paper image of the Kitchen God, who will report on the family's conduct over the past year. The offerings to the Kitchen God include pig's head, fish, sweet bean paste, melons, fruit, boiled dumplings, barley sugar, and Guandong candy, a sticky treat made out of glutinous millet and sprouted wheat. Most of the offerings are sweets of various varieties. It is thought that this will seal the Kitchen God's mouth and encourage him to only say good things about the family when he ascends to heaven to make his report.
2. House cleaning
According to Chinese folk beliefs, during the last month of the year ghosts and deities must choose either to return to Heaven or to stay on Earth. It is believed that in order to ensure the ghosts and deities' timely departure people must thoroughly clean both their persons and their houses, down to every last drawer and cupboard.
3. Eat Guandong candy
Guandong candy, a sticky treat made out of glutinous millet and sprouted wheat, is a traditional snack that Chinese people eat on the Festival of the Kitchen God.
4. Paste paper-cuts to windows
In the Little New Year, old couplets and paper-cuts from the previous Spring Festival are taken down, and new window decorations, New Year's posters, and auspicious(吉利的) decorations are pasted up.
5. Bath and hair-cut
As the old Chinese saying goes, whether they're rich or poor, people often have a haircut before the Spring Festival. The activity of taking bath and haircut is often taken on the Little New Year.
6. Preparations for Spring Festival
People start to stock up necessary provisions for the Spring Festival since the Little New Year. Everything needed to make offerings to the ancestors, entertain guests, and feed the family over the long holiday must be purchased in advance.

22、 Walmart China has named Zhu Xiaojing Christina as president and CEO, effective May 8, its first female head in China. Current CEO Wern-Yuen Tan will leave the company after three years to return home to his family in Singapore. Zhu joins Walmart from Fonterra China, where she most recently served as president. The new appointment signals the US retailer's direction to be more digitalized and innovative in China's competitive retail(零售的)market.
"At a time of incredible disruption(扰乱)in retail landscape across China, it's vital to have a digital savvy, innovative leader to continue the remarkable work Yuen has done over the past few years heading up our business in China,” said Dirk Van den Berghe, Walmart's EVP, Global Sourcing and Regional CEO-Asia.
"Christina's impact on Fonterra's overall business —improving its brands and products as top sellers in many categories through digitization and constant innovation ——cannot be understated."
Before joining Fonterra in 2011, Zhu held various leadership roles in multinational companies such as Honeywell and McKinsey & Co.
Tan, who will leave the company on June 15, joined Walmart China in 2017. During his three years with Walmart China, Tan oversaw an expansion in formats and services across Walmart and Sam's Club China. Recently, Tan played a good role in Walmart China's response to the recent COVID-19 crisis.
Van den Berghe said: "From the moment we first learned of the novel coronavirus(冠状 病毒)threat, Yuen poured himself into the response effort, first ensuring the health and safety of our staff, then working with government officials to keep our retail units open so that customers could access essential goods and services. ” As our business in China found its way forward, Yuen went even further, compiling learning and best practices to share with the US business and across our international markets. The speed and effectiveness of Walmart's global response to the pandemic is a credit to Yuen's leadership.
Walmart said it was planning to open more than 500 new stores and depots (smaller warehouses) in China during the next five to seven years and improving 200 existing stores in three years.

23、We often hear that 60 is the new 50. Just check out the images of your grandparents or great-grandparents and notice their stooped(曲背的) bodies, their wrinkled faces when they were barely pushing 60. What a contrast with energetic, gym-going sexagenarians(六十几岁的人) of today!
The research overseen by gerontologist (老年学家) Taina Rantanen, compared adults born in 1910 and 1914 with those born roughly 30 years later. Both birth groups were examined in person at age 60 and again at 70 with the same set of six physical tests and five measures of cognition.
According to the research, the later-born group could walk faster, had a stronger hand grasp and could use more force with their lower legs. On cognitive tests, the later-born group had better verbal fluency, and scored higher on a test matching numbers to symbols. But not everything changed across the generations: measures of lung function were surprisingly not changing, and there was no improvement in the short-term-memory task of recalling a series of digits(数字).
There are many reasons why people are aging better, including improved medical care and a drop in smoking, but the key factor shown in the study of physical function was that the later-born adults were more physically active and had bigger bodies, which suggested better nutrition. For brain function, the key seemed to be more years of education.
“Education is a powerful influence on aging and health,” says Luigi Ferrucci, scientific director of the U. S. National Institute on Aging. “With more education, you are probably going to have a larger income, which means you are more likely to go to the doctor, and have good nutrition.” He also points out that the average lifespan is seven years shorter in a poor state such as Mississippi than in a wealthier one such as California. “Here we still have lots of people who cannot take the drugs they need because they cannot pay for them,” he says. In short, 60 may be the new 50 for many of us but not for all.
【1】How does the writer begin the passage?
A.By imagining a scene.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By raising a question.
D.By presenting an image.
【2】Which of the following is true about the research?
A.Not everything changed across the generations.
B.The later-born group could hardly grasp things tightly.
C.The later-born group did worse in matching numbers to symbols.
D.There was a little improvement in short-term memory in both groups.
【3】According to the research, what contributes most to better physical aging?
A.Improved medical care.
B.Education.
C.Better nutrition.
D.Energetic images.
【4】What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Many reasons contribute to people’s better physical function.
B.Today’s energetic sexagenarians have much better images.
C.Education is the key to people’s better aging.
D.People today are aging better than people born earlier.
24、Sleep repairs the body and the mind and helps prevent disease by strengthening the immune system. However, many adults do not get eight hours of sleep each night. The average adult today gets only 6.4 hours of sleep. Only in recent years have health professionals begun to realize the seriousness of sleep deprivation in the working population. A significant number of people work at night, work long hours, or suffer from sleeplessness or jet lag.
Studies show that the brain is negatively affected by sleep deprivation because certain patterns of electrical and chemical activity that occur during sleep are interrupted and the brain cannot function normally. In one study, thirteen healthy adult subjects(实验对象) who usually had normal sleep patterns were kept awake and carefully monitored in a lab during a period of 35 hours. During the experiment, the subjects were asked to perform several tasks, such as mathematics and word problems, while undergoing scans of their brain activity. The researchers found that the temporal lobe (颞叶) of the brain, the region involved in language processing, was active during speech tasks in rested subjects but not in subjects who lacked enough sleep. After several hours without sleep, there was no activity within this region.
Several studies show that getting fewer than six hours of sleep can damage short-term memory and reaction time—thus causing a serious risk of accident. In one study of drivers, researchers reported that sleep deprivation had the same effects as being drunk. They found that people who drove after being awake for 17 hours performed worse than those with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 percent, the legal limit for drunk driving in most western European countries. The researchers concluded that countries with drunk driving laws should consider similar restrictions against sleep-deprived driving.

D.To argue against raising the legal limit for drunk driving.
