21、 I always pictured myself graduating from college, getting a cool job and even having a cute little place of my own. So far, I have a master's degree and the coolest job ever as a physician assistant. But instead of waking up in a pretty apartment, I hear the earlymorning sound of my parents making coffee downstairs.
At 27, I still live with my parents, and I love it.
My decision to live at home was not one of absolute necessity. As a physician assistant, I make a good salary and would be able to live on my own comfortably if I needed to do so. By the time I finished graduate school, I had had a D|S150,000 debt from both undergraduate and graduate education. With several of these loans earning a 7.9% interest rate, my father calculated that my loans were increasing by D|S15 a day in interest alone. At this rate, it would take me 30 years to pay off my student loans, with much of the payment going straight to interest. At last, I decided to live with my parents.
Beyond the endless supply of homecooked meals, the best thing about moving back home is that I am not alone. Several of my physician assistant friends are in the same boat as I am — we are all highly educated, whitecollar employees who live at home. Our coworkers in the medical field think it is a great idea because many of them are facing the same piles of debt. They often say if they could do it all again, they would do the same thing.
There's a stigma (耻辱) that comes along with this arrangement. Some people might assume that we are too lazy to find a job. I don't think my neighbors understand it, as they continually ask me when I am going to graduate and if I am old enough to look after their children. My mom just tells them that I'm successful, welleducated and that I save lives.
I love living at home. Now I've paid off D|S68,000 of my student loans. Our new relationship is symbiotic (共生的). My parents benefit from having an extra set of hands around the house to help with housework and a constant source to explain all popculture references.

22、“WHAT IS CIVILIZATION?” asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ago in the BBC series on the subject. “I don’t know, and I can’t define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recognize it when I see it, and I’m looking at it now.” And he turned to gesture behind him, at the soaring Gothic towers and flying buttresses of Notre Dame(巴黎圣母院).
It seems inhuman to care more about a building than about people. That the sight of Notre Dame going up in flames has attracted so much more attention than floods in southern Africa which killed over 1,000 arouses understandable feelings of guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight of the cathedral’s collapsing tower is in fact profoundly human—and in a particularly 21st-century way.
It is not just the economy that is global today, it is culture too. People wander the world in search not just of jobs and security but also of beauty and history. Familiarity breeds affection. A building on whose sunny steps you have rested, in front of which you have taken a photo with your loved one, becomes a warm part of your memories and thus of yourself. That helps explain why China is in mourning—WeChat, young China’s principal means of talking to itself, has been throbbing with the story, and Xi Jinping, the country’s president, sent a message of condolence to Emmanuel Macron, his French counterpart—while India was largely indifferent. Tourism from India to the West is a trickle(细流) compared with the flood from China.
This visual age has endowed beauty with new power, and social media have turned great works of art into superstars. Only a few, though, have achieved this status. Just as there is only ever a handful of world-famous actors, so the pantheon(万神殿)of globally recognizable cultural symbols is tiny: the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid—and Notre Dame. Disaster, too, is visual. In the 24 hours after the fire started videos on social media of the burning cathedral were viewed nearly a quarter of a billion times.
Yet the emotions the sight aroused were less about the building itself than about what losing it might mean. Notre Dame is an expression of humanity at its collective best. Nobody could look up into that ceiling without wondering at the genius of the thousands of anonymous craftsmen who, over a century and a half, realized a vision so grand in its structural ambition and so delicate in its detail. Its survival through 850 years of political turbulence—through war, revolution and Nazi occupation—binds the present to the past.
The fire also binds people to each other. The outpouring of emotion it has brought forth is proof that, despite the dark forces of division now abroad, we are all in it together. When nationalism is a rising threat, shared sadness makes borders suddenly irrelevant. When politics is polarized, a love of culture has the power to unite. When extremism divides Muslim from Christian and religious people from atheists, those of all faiths and none are mourning together. An building built for the glory of God also represents the unity of the human spirit.
And it will be rebuilt. The morning after the fire, the many Parisians who went to the cathedral to mourn its destruction found comfort instead. Although the spire is gone, the towers are still standing and it seems likely that the whole building can be reconstructed. The effort to rebuild it, like the fire, will bring people together. Within 24 hours, €600m ($677m) had been raised from businesses and rich people, and a rash of crowd funding campaigns started. A high-resolution laser scan of the building, carried out recently, should help.
It will never be the same, but that is as it should be. As Victor Hugo wrote in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, a three-volume love-letter to the cathedral: “Great buildings, like great mountains, are the work of centuries. Art is often transformed as it is being made…Time is the architect, the nation is the builder.”

23、As prices drop and their functionality expands, you can expect to see humanoid(类人的)robots in more places, including schools, airports, and hospitals. Will they influence human behavior?
In a study published recently, scientists found that mean robots can help people concentrate. The experiment, published in Science Robotics, was based on something called the Stroop Task, which is widely used in psychology and described as the "gold standard" of attentional tests. It challenges participants to name the colors of words and ignore their meanings while calculating reaction time.
The researchers put a modern twist on the task, though-this time, there was a robot in the room. The goal was to see if the presence of a robot would affect cognition, and the researchers found it did, but only when the robot was mean.
How do you make a robot mean? In this case, a meter-tall toy robot called a Meccanoid G15KS was made to respond to seven questions. The good robots told jokes, spoke about friendship, and described test subjects as nice. The bad robots replied to questions with passive aggressive comebacks, such as "I enjoy doing analysis programs but you would not understand" and statements like "I do not value friendship."Then the participants rated the robots."The more participants thought the robot made them uncomfortable, the greater the improvement of their Stroop performance was," the researchers wrote."Not surprisingly, the bad robot was rated as less warm, friendly and pleasant than the good robot."
The study authors argue that robots are crossing the line in some situations from machines to social agents. That will change how humans interact with and behave around them.
“Similar to a human's presence, the presence of a robot might not be neutral(无倾向性的) in situations like school or in the office when you are working." Nicolas Spatola, one of the study authors said in an email, "So before your boss decides to introduce a robot in your office, it could be a good idea to evaluate how you feel about it and how it can positively or negatively impact your work, how comfortable you may feel with it or if you feel it to be a threat."
Just 58 students from University Clermont Auvergne in France participated in the experiment but the researchers found an increase in the speed of correct answers among those in the presence of a mean robot when compared to those who were with a nice robot or alone.
In the future, robots will almost certainly become more and more common in nursing homes, hotel check-in desks, behind the wheel, and elsewhere. “If we want to improve the use of robots in our daily life, there seems to be a need to first understand how Human Robot Interaction can impact human psychology,” Spatola said.
【1】What was the finding of the new study?
A.The use of robots is rising.
B.Humanoid robots can be mean.
C.Unkind robots can sharpen our focus.
D.Robots are becoming more functional.,.
【2】According to the passage, how did the participants judge the robots?
A.By their words.
B.By their actions.
C.By their appearance.
D.By the Stroop Task.
【3】Which of the following might Nicolas Spatola agree with?
A.Be careful about using robots.
B.Leave the robot if it presents a threat.
C.Robots will have a good impact on offices.
D.Robots may replace humans in the workplace.
【4】What was the drawback of the study?
A.The participants were too young.
B.The study method wasn't scientific.
C.There was a slight difference in speed.
D.The number of the participants was too small.
【5】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Scientists have already developed humanoid robots.
B.Humanoid robots have already found its way into our daily life.
C.Humanoid robots will certainly come into our daily life sooner or later.
D.There is no difficulty we'll meet with before humanoid robots are widely used.
24、 What’s the point of dining out when we can have whatever meal we want delivered to our homes as we watch movies on our giant flat screen TVs? According to statistics from Technomic, 86% of consumers are using off-premise (营业场所外的) channels at least once a month, and a third of consumers are using it more than they did a year ago.
Most restaurant companies are chasing these trends to keep up with quickly changing consumer demands. Fazoli’s has spent the past two years investing in its drive-through, takeaway, and delivery business, and has launched a new app aimed at making takeaway orders easier. These efforts have paid off so far — off-premise sales are up 18.5% over the last year, said Jennifer Crawford, director of off-premise sales at Fazoli’s.
But, she notes that sales are not the only benefit. “The off-premise channel is a great opportunity to connect with a new consumer group,” Crawford said. “Many of our off-premise guests have not dined in a Fazoli’s or experienced our menu. With options like third-party delivery and online ordering, we are able to tap into potential new guests.”
Sales growth and new customer potential are great rewards, to be sure. But that doesn’t mean carrying out off-premise channels comes without challenges. A big one is the lack of control and maintaining the guest relationship. “When a guest dines in, we can provide a level of service that improves the consumer dining experience. The lack of control can extend into the digital experience because sometimes orders are not processed properly in the third-party software due to the drop-down (下拉式的) menus and default (默认) orders.” she said. “Besides, it is difficult to manage during peak hours and maintaining food quality and integrity (完整) during delivery is also tricky with certain dishes.”
Nevertheless, Crawford believes the juice is well worth the squeeze. “Across the industry, dine-in traffic continues to decline or remain flat. If brands are not promoting sales through takeaway and delivery, they are missing out on income.” she said.
【1】Why does Fazoli’s invest in off-premise channels?
A.Because it wants to see the potential of its consumers.
B.Because it wants to keep up with the latest technical changes.
C.Because it wants to survive in the changing consumer landscape.
D.Because it wants to connect with its new consumers.
【2】We can know from Paragraph 4 that _______.
A.third-party apps may not offer as good an experience of ordering as restaurants
B.third-party apps may get out of control when used incorrectly
C.It makes no difference to restaurants whether it is the peak time or not.
D.food quality and integrity can be guaranteed during delivery.
【3】What is Crawford’s attitude towards off-premise channels?
A.Cautious B.Doubtful C.Favorable D.Worried
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Off-premise channels still need improving.
B.Restaurants are having difficulty in attracting their consumers.
C.Off-premise channels create more difficulties than opportunities.
D.Restaurants are adapting to the rise of takeaway using off-premise channels.

There was no one there to _______ what exactly happened, but Michael Beattie from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took up the story. “When the police arrived on the _______, they saw quite distinct drag marks. It was _______ that young Max had actually been pulled out of the dam by one of the dogs - most likely Tank. Max was making moves to go back into the dam and Muck was virtually heading him off at the pass. It was the police’s opinion that the only way that Max was ____________ from drowning was by the two dogs. ”
For saving the toddler’s life, the daring two dogs received the RSPCA’s Purple Cross award for bravery- plus two very large bones.
