二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It is not uncommon for close synonyms to be understood to share the same meaning. The difference between words like “hard”and “difficult”, for example, goes tragically unnoticed.

Take for example the following sentences: 1) The test was hard. 2) The test was difficult. Is there a noticeable difference between the at all? If not, what would be the point to having multiple words with the exact same meaning? While many close synonyms share similar, if not the same, dictionary definitions, the feeling or mood they convey is utterly singular, if there is indeed a difference between words like “hard” and “difficult”, what is it?

To begin, “hard” is pragmatic and realistic, firmly grounded in reality. On the other hand, “difficult” is civilized, willing to make the effort necessary to appear polite. Furthermore, “hard” is more likely to be used in casual, in formal circumstances. It is used without pretense, and does not maintain a feeling of being overly concerned. In terms of daily usage, “hard” may be employed by an exhausted brick mason (石匠) when posed with the question, “How was your day” Conversely, “difficult” may be used by a military general upon explaining to his or her superior the progression of a particularly taxing campaign.

Now, let’s look at the synonyms, “happy” and “glad”. Take for example the following sentences: 1) Tommy is happy because he got a new bike. 2) Tommy is glad because he got a new bike. Again, upon consulting a dictionary, one will find highly similar, if not the same, definitions. But these definitions lack the feeling, the unique emotional charge that these words convey. The word “happy” conveys a sense of a carefree attitude. The thought of someone who is “happy” conveys the image of a bright-eyed, ruddy, smiling face. One is “ happy” on the morning of his birthday, discovering a new puppy bounding into his bedroom. On the other hand, the word “glad” conveys a sense of relief or contentment. The thought of someone who is “glad” conveys the image of a man standing crossed-armed, nodding gently.

Granted, the notion that close synonyms can be used interchangeably is prevalent among English speakers. However, using the examples and insights described above, one may come to recognize these subtle, yet crucial, differences.

1Which of the following statements best describes the main idea of this passage?

A.Close synonyms are difficult to comprehend, and are commonly used interchangeably.

B.Contrary to popular belief, important differences exist between come close synonyms.

C.The difference between the words “hard”and “difficult” is vague to most.

D.Most English speakers believe close synonyms can be used interchangeably.

2Which is closest in meaning with “utterly singular” in the second paragraph?

    A.just the same

    B.quite the opposite

    C.very similar

    D.totally different

3The writer would agree that ____________.

A.In English, we have multiple words with the exact same meaning

B.Close synonyms should not be used interchangeably

C.By saying “It was hard”, one tries to sound polite and formal

D.The difference between close synonyms are too subtle and thus unimportant

    4It can be inferred that____________.

A.dictionaries are of little help when it comes to clarifying the differences between close synonyms

B.close synonyms like “happy” and “glad” are largely misused among English speakers

C.a military general would never use a word like “hard”or “happy”

D.It is impossible to recognize the real differences between close synonyms

  • 22、An entire industry has been built upon the assumption that image is everything, but when it comes to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no substance(事实)behind the image, the product, service or person will fail eventually.

First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services.Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection.Public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal(丑闻)showed that behind that image, it cheated in business practices.Despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit.Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality, behind the image has led to the downfall of the word-famous accounting firm.

Similarly, personal advisers can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars.Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.

To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. But image is only half of the equation(等式).What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself—the person or product must deliver truth on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.

【1】The down fall of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm is due to ________.

A.its previous images. B.its dishonesty in business.

C.its bad management. D.its poor service.

【2】Why did some famous people fall from grace?

A.They failed to live up to their images.

B.Their images were not well built up.

C.They felt much pressure from the public.

D.They paid little attention to fame and fortune.

【3】The structure of the passage is _________.

    AArgument   P:Point C.Conclusion

【4】The author tries to argue that ________.

    A.image creates everything.

B.image is the key to success.

C.truth is unlikely ever to be equaled.

D.truth and image are equally important.

  • 23、   Let’s be real, we all have a special place in our heart for the home (or homes) we grew up in.

Think of the place where you learned to ride your first bike or the door frame where your parents tracked your heights. But would that nostalgia be enough for you to drop half a million to buy back the house? If you’re author J. K. Rowling, and your childhood home inspired certain parts of what would become one of the most well-known fiction series to ever exist, it’s worth considering.

As it turns out, Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling owns her childhood home, Church Cottage at Tutshill in Chepstow, according to the The Daily Mail. Rowling had quietly bought it back in 2011 for £400,000.

Now, the secret is out, as this week, Rowling and her husband commissioned major renovation projects for it, after years of no activity. The district council has granted the couple planning permission to install two rear dormer windows and knock down and rebuild the garage.

But let’s talk about that magic that is Church Cottage already. Rowling lived here from ages nine to 18. The home includes a cupboard under the stairs (sound familiar?!), which is believed to have been the inspiration for Harry’s room at the Dursley family’s house. There is also a trap door in the cottage’s dining room, similar to the one Fluffy guards in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Also, the property is near the Forest of Dean, where a large part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows takes place.

Over the years, some wise fans were able to connect the dots leading to the home, often trying to visit it. “For years, every time a book or a film came out, there were always members of the public asking to come in to see the house,” Julian Mercer, the home’s former owner, told BBC back in 2011. “That’s been happening ever since the book came out. But we haven’t let them in.”

Now that the secret’s out that the home is back in Rowling’s hands, those uninvited fans might be knocking on the door a little more frequently. Although her exact renovation plans may still be a mystery, we sure hope she turns it into a museum for the book.

【1】What can we learn about Church Cottage from the passage?

A.Rowling got a lot of inspiration from it.

B.Rowling learned how to ride her bike there.

C.Rowling’s parents secretly sold it for half a million.

D.Rowling’s parents recorded her heights on its door frame.

【2】What does the underlined word “property” probably refer to?

    A.Harry’s room.

    B.The trap door.

    C.Dursley family’s house.

    D.Church Cottage.

【3】What can we infer about Julian Mercer from the text?

A.He is one of Rowling’s fans.

B.He sold his cottage in 2011.

C.He is a reporter from BBC.

    D.He is a character in Rowling’s books.

【4】When do visitors begin trying to visit the house?

A.After Rowling bought the house back.

B.After the public began to focus on it.

    C.After Rowling’s books came out.

D.After the house was changed into a museum.

  • 24、LAS VEGAS—It was different in the light of day.

There was no “pop, pop, pop” of gunfire, no screams. Just a quiet lot of cars abandoned by those, like Kassidy Owen, who escaped with their lives.

“It's strange to hear the silence” Owen said, “because all I remember was the noise”

The 22-year-old was one of dozens of concertgoers who returned to the scene of the Route 91 Harvest festival on Wednesday morning to fetch the vehicles they left behind as they fled from a gunman raining down bullets from high above in the tower of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino across the street.

Survivors of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday needed their cars to move on with their lives-to get back to work, to school, home. It was the first time they were returning to a scene that would forever change them, when joy and celebration and music turned into killing and horror.

Before they could move forward, they had to go back to the place where they thought they were going to die.

Owen had run to her car to hide and had tried to drive away, but she couldn't. People were running, bodies dropped to the ground, and cars bottlenecked in the parking lot. During a brief pause after more than 10 minutes of gunfire, she worried the lights of her SUV made everyone inside a shining target.

“They're shooting again” her best friend's brother screamed. “Turn off the car!”

That's when she got out and fled.

“I just remember shutting the door and running.” Owen said.

Now, nearly three days later, she was back, sitting in the driver's seat of her SUV. Her eyes were swollen and red. This was a long way from over.

“You just keep hearing the gunshots in your head,” Owen said.

【1】Why did Kassidy Owen return to the scene of terror?

A.To get back her car for daily life.

B.To show sympathy to the victims.

C.To search for her missing friends.

D.To look into the cause of the shooting.

【2】What does “cars bottlenecked in the parking lot” in Paragraph 7 mean?

A.Cars were abandoned in the parking lot.

B.The parking lot was jammed with cars.

C.The parking lot was covered with broken bottles.

D.Cars broke down in the parking lot.

【3】Why did Owen keep hearing the gunshots in her head?

A.Because she had escaped being caught.

B.Because she wanted to find the gunman.

C.Because she couldn't rid herself of those terrible scenes.

D.Because she had saved others' lives by turning off the car.

【4】What is talked about in the news story?

A.Survivors went back to where they would die.

    B.Owen's experience in Las Vegas.

C.How to survive in a mass shooting.

D.People returned to the unforgettable scene.
