六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Popeye the Sailor first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s. The sailor in that cartoon ate lots of spinach (菠菜) to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33 percent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people's diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable.

Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not true. Spinach does not have any more iron () than any other green vegetable.

People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.

Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach cannot make a difference in how strong a person is. However, spinach does have something else which the body needs-folic acid (叶酸).

It is interesting to point out that folic acid can help make a person strong. Maybe it was really the folic acid that made Popeye strong all along.

1A good title for this reading passage is________.

A.Popeye the Sailor B.The Truth About Spinach

C.A Mistake with Numbers D.Folic Acid Makes You Strong

2Why did many people eat spinach after they saw Popeye the Sailor?

A.They thought spinach made them strong. B.They thought Popeye was funny.

C.Spinach had a lot of iron. D.People liked folic acid.

3A research group told people that spinach________.

    A.made Popeye strong B.was a green vegetable

C.had less iron than other green vegetables D.had more iron than other green vegetables

4The reading passage says that perhaps Popeye got his strength from ________.

    A.iron B.folic acid C.spinach D.exercise

  • 23、   Old habits, especially bad ones, can be hard to break.

People often make fun of New Year's resolutions (决心). However, resolutions present a big opportunity for self-improvement. Fortunately, social science has some ideas about how to start a good habit and stick to it.

Gary Charness and Uri Gneezy, two scientists at the University of Chicago, did some research, where 120 students were asked to take part in an experiment about exercise habits, and each of them would get $175 in the end. The students were randomly assigned (随机分配)  to three groups. The first group got the money for just giving researchers permission (允许) to record their gym attendance (出勤). The second group gave permission, but had to go to the gym at least once the next month. The final group gave permission and had to go to the gym eight times that month.

Unsurprisingly, the group that had to make eight gym visits to get paid exercised more than the other two groups. After the payments stopped, these students kept going to the gym at higher rates (频率). They went to the gym about twice as often as the other two groups.

In another study, researchers invited 151 students to work out in the gym, and randomly assigned 75 to a "temptation-bundling" group. As they exercised, they listened to the start of an attractive audio-novel (有声小说).At the end of their workout, students were told that if they wanted to hear what happened next in their book, they would have to come back to the gym .They could only listen to the audio-book while exercising. The other 76 students also completed the first workout but without any kind of temptation bundle.

It turned out that the students in the temptation-bundling group visited the gym 27% more often than the control group over the next seven weeks. Sadly, the temptation-bundling trick fell apart over the Thanksgiving holiday when the gym was closed.

The studies show that trying something new quite often for as little as a month can kick-start a lasting change in behavior. Moreover, "temptation-bundling" may also be a useful method for changing behavior, particularly when used together with other methods. Even if you cannot promise yourself to stick with something for long, there is a huge benefit in putting in a lot of energy for a few weeks. It may pay off for longer than you think. So, why not challenge yourself with next New Year's resolution?

1What can we learn from the two studies?

A.The students got different payments according to their gym attendance.

B.The temptation-bundling group loved audio-novels more than the other group.

C.The students who exercised more often at first were more likely to keep working out.

D.27% of students in the temptation-bundling group exercised more often than before.

2The third paragraph is mainly about ________.

A.what was found in the research

    B.how the research was performed

C.why the scientists did the research

D.who took part in the research

3The underlined word "temptation-bundling" in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.

A.forming new habits by trying something you didn't like before

B.pushing yourself by doing two tasks at the same time

C.improving your workout skills by listening to audio-books

D.connecting something you like with something you have to do

4What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To encourage people to go to the gym more often.

B.To present a new way to do scientific research.

C.To offer advice on how to develop a good habit.

D.To stress the importance of New Year's resolutions.

七、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、   When you're sitting in class, have you ever drawn pictures in the margins(边缘) of your notebooks? If so, your teacher may have told you to stop 1 them. Many people think of doodling (涂鸦)as distraction(精神涣散) from more important things 2 it might be just the opposite.

Some people realize that drawing may help you remember things you hear. In 2019 researchers asked two 3 of people to listen to a phone message and then gave them the same task of remembering the information from it. The researchers encouraged one group to doodle, but not the 4 . At last, the group that doodled remembered 29 percent more.

Other people have found other uses for doodling.

Jesse Prinz, a professor who studies doodling, says it can help you think creatively. Walking away from a problem to draw might actually help you 5 it. When you come back, you will have a fresh idea and work out an answer more quickly.

Two years ago, an author named Sunni Brown wrote a book on doodling. Many people regard doodling 6 doing nothing, but 7 she doesn't think so. She argues that in fact, doodling is a tool that can help people think, it isn't useless at all. Through doing experiments(实验), Brown shows doodling incorporates (整合) many ways of learning. You use four ways seeing, hearing, reading or writing through doodling. The 8 ways you use, the better you learn. And when you doodle while you are listening to lecture(讲座), you use all four.

You might think that being good at drawing is important for doodling. But if doodling is to help you think, it doesn't matter what the picture looks like. So next time you need help to focus, pick up pen and doodle away.
